Major Outer Membrane Protein
(MOMP) gene
For general laboratory and research use only

Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a rod-shaped Gram-negative bacterium of the
Chlamydiaceae family that may be up to 1µm in length. The genome of this bacterium is
over 1M nucleotides in length and arranged in a circular conformation that encode over
1000 proteins. C. pneumonia is a pathogenic bacterium that causes pneumonia and
respiratory infections in humans.
C. pneumoniae exists as an elementary body when outside of a host. In this conformation,
the bacterium is not biologically active, but is able to withstand environmental stresses until
in reaches a new host where, upon phagocytosis by the host lung cell, it transforms to a
reticulate body which is then able to replicate. After replication, the reticulate body reverts
back to an elementary body, is released from the infected cell by lysis and is then able to
infect other cells.
The infection and lysis of host lung cells causes pneumonia which results in symptoms
including cough, fever and nasal congestion that can lead to sinusitis, pharyngitis and
laryngitis. As identifying bacteria from an infection is a lengthy process, antibiotics that are
effective against a wide range of bacterium are frequently used to treat pneumonia before
the bacteria is identified.
Introduction to Chlamydophila pneumoniae

The target sequence (MOMP) has previously been shown to be a good genetic marker
for C. pneumonia in other real time PCR based studies (Xia QF et.al 2007). The primers
and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of clinically
relevant reference sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Chlamydophila pneumoniae (C.pneumoniae) genomes is
designed for the in vitro quantification of C.pneumoniae genomes. The kit is designed to
have the broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the C.pneumoniae
genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
C.pneumoniae sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
