18S ribosomal RNA (18S) gene
For general laboratory and research use only
Babesia bigemina is a protozoan parasite of cattle. The nuclear genome of B. bigemina is
10 Mb in size and is distributed over 4 chromosomes. B. bigemina has a much more
dangerous impact on livestock health and productivity compared to the other Babesia
species and uses only one species as a vector for transmission, this is Boophilus
decoloratus. B.bigemina causes Babesiosis also known as 'Texas cattle fever' or 'redwater fever'.
Boophilus ticks transmit B.bigemina to the cattle during feeding. In the mammalian host B.
bigemina reproduces asexually, increasing massively in number by binary fission. This
increase in numbers within the infected erythrocytes results in destruction of the cells
causing severe anaemia and haemoglobinuria. The parasite is transmitted to uninfected
ticks when they feed on an infected host. The parasite then begins its sexual cycle in the
gut of the tick eventually reaching the salivary glands ready to infect a new host,
completing the protozoan life cycle.
Major symptoms of Babesiosis are fever, anaemia, and red or black urine. Infection
reduces the productivity of the cattle and may be fatal. Babesiosis is controlled by
administering acaricides and to some extent by vaccination using live, attenuated
parasites. B. bigemina infection is seen in all regions where the tick vectors are
encountered, including North and South America, Southern Europe, Africa, Asia and
Australia.
Introduction to Babesia bigemina
Our kit for Babesia bigemina has been designed for the specific and exclusive in vitro
quantification of this species . The 18S ribosomal gene, is the ideal target to achieve a
broad based detection profile for all isolates within this species. The primers and probe
sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of clinically relevant
reference sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis. Other closely
related Babesia species are not detected.
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Babesia bigemina (B.bigemina) genomes is designed for the
in vitro quantification of B.bigemina genomes. The kit is designed to have the broadest
detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the B.bigemina genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
B.bigemina sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
