1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing an acoustic stethoscope from PCE Instruments. The stethoscope PCE-S 40 is a device mostly used in order to detect and amplify mechanical noises. The machines need to be serviced and maintained so that they do not suffer from any damages. By servicing a machine with an acoustic stethoscope it is made possible to amplify noises within the machine that do not exist during the normal use of the machine. Knockings and grindings are only two examples of different noises that can be detected.
The PCE-S 40 consists of ear hooks, one tube and one probe with which the measurements are performed. The noises are picked up by the probe, forwarded via the tube and then heard by the user. At the end of the ear hooks there are the ear tips made of soft plastic. They can be reordered and exchanged any time. The soft plastic allows the user to put them into his/her ears directly. Furthermore they are used to suppress surrounding noises which may influence the process of noise detection.

4 System description
The acoustic stethoscope is shaped in a way that the ear hooks fit around the human head and into the human ear. The ear hooks have to be used in a way that they point away from the human body. The reason for this is that this is the only way to place them in your ear properly. Stethoscopes only work well if the surrounding noises are suppressed. The use of soft plastic as ear tips improves the sound suppression as they fit into the human ear perfectly.
After the acoustic stethoscope has been put on, you will immediately be able to perform measurements. To do so, you simply need to put place the probe on a certain part of a machine and start listening to the noises. In the case of irregularities like soft knockings or slight grindings within the machine, you need to replace certain parts like bearings.
