Introduction
The PASCO OS-8532 Concave Mirror Accessory is designed to be used with the PASCO Model OS-8515 Basic
Optics System. The Concave Mirror Accessory consists
of a +50 mm focal length concave mirror and a halfscreen. Both are mounted in accessory holders which fit
onto the Optics Bench that is part of the OS-8515 Basic
Optics System.
Using the Equipment
The white screen in the half-screen accessory can be rotated to any angle. The reverse side of the concave mirror
is also silvered (but not front surfaced) and can be used as
a convex mirror.
The concave mirror accessory and the half-screen accessory snap into place on the Optics Bench. To move an
accessory along the bench, grasp the base of the accessory holder and squeeze the locking clip inward. Continue
to squeeze inward on the locking clip as you move the
accessory to the new position. When you release the locking clip, the accessory holder is held firmly in place.

Concave Mirror for Basic Optics 012-06528A
Experiment : Focal Length of a Concave Mirror
EQUIPMENT NEEDED
– Concave Mirror – Half-Screen
– Optics Bench (from OS-8515) – Light Source (from OS-8515)
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to measure the focal length of a concave mirror.
Procedure
1. Mount the Light Source at one end of the Optics Bench. Place the Concave Mirror at the other end of the Optics
Bench.
2. Position the Light Source so the crossed arrow target is aimed at the Concave Mirror and the concave surface of
the mirror faces the light source.
3. Place the Half-Screen a few centimeters in front of the Concave Mirror (between the mirror and the Light
Source).
4. Move the Half-Screen closer to or farther from the Concave Mirror until the reflected image of the crossed
arrow target on the white screen is focused.
5. Measure the distance between the position indicators on the Half-Screen and the Concave Mirror.

Questions
1. How does the measured distance compare to the focal length of the Concave Mirror?
2. How might you determine the focal length more accurately?
3. What is the orientation of the image of the crossed arrow target compared to the target itself?
4. How does the size of the image of the crossed arrow target compare to the target itself?

Contacting Technical Support
Before you call the PASCO Technical Support staff, it
would be helpful to prepare the following information:
• If your problem is with the PASCO apparatus, note:
Title and model number (usually listed on the
label);
Approximate age of apparatus;
A detailed description of the problem/sequence of
events (in case you can’t call PASCO right away,
you won’t lose valuable data);
If possible, have the apparatus within reach when
calling to facilitate description of individual parts.
• If your problem relates to the instruction manual, note:
Part number and revision (listed by month and year
on the front cover);
Have the manual at hand to discuss your
questions.
