THERMODYNAMICS KIT
Introduction
The PASCO CI-6514A Thermodynamics Kit can be used to measure the electrical equivalent of heat and investigate thermal absorption and radiation.
Included in this kit are three cans (one unpainted, one white, and one black) and a heating element.
The cans are very useful in demonstrating that objects of the same material, but with different colors, will absorb and radiate heat at different rates. By filling the cans with water, and determining the temperature of each, one can confirm that the darker can heats and cools more quickly than the cans of lighter color.
The heating element is a 10/6W resistor. A thermal switch keeps the temperature of the resistor from exceeding approximately 80° C.
CAUTION: Do not exceed 10V across the resistor or the resistor may be damaged.
CAUTION: Because the thermal switch relies on magnets, operation in close proximity to strong magnetic fields may cause erratic results.
Additional Equipment Recommended:
External Power Supply or PASCO ScienceWorkshop 750 Interface with CI-6552A Power Amplifier.
CI-6505A Temperature Sensor (or equivalent temperature sensing device)

Contacting Technical Support
Before you call the PASCO Technical Support staff, it would be helpful to prepare the following information:
If your problem is with the PASCO apparatus, note:
- Title and model number (usually listed on the
label);
- Approximate age of apparatus;
- A detailed description of the problem/sequence of
events (in case you can’t call PASCO right away, you won’t lose valuable data);
- If possible, have the apparatus within reach when
calling to facilitate description of individual parts.
If your problem relates to the instruction manual,
note:
- Part number and revision (listed by month and year
on the front cover);
- Have the manual at hand to discuss your
questions.
