Model 2144 POTS/ISDN Splitter Shelf
Installation Guide
Comtest Advanced Networks
This guide provides the basic information required to
install the Comtest Model 2144 POTS/ISDN Splitter
Shelf in a Central Office location.
Installation
The 2144 requires 3U (5.25 inches) of rack space and
is centre mounted. The shelf is suppl ied with
mounting brackets and hardware to allow installation
in a 19 inch or 23 inch rack. By repositioning the mounting brackets, the shelf can be installed with the
connectors front or rear facing. With the connectors facing the rear, a depth of 10 inches would be sufficient to
mount the shelf with cables installed.
Grounding
To comply with the Network Equipment Building Systems (NEBS) requirements, a suitable ground must be
provided. The 2144 can be grounded to the rack through the mounting brackets, eliminating the need for
separate a ground wire.
Cabling Overview
The 2144 Splitter Shelf cabling configurations will vary depending on installation locations and the number of
lines supported by the DSLAM. However, the physical interface to the back p lane connectors are standard 50 pin telephone-type receptacle connectors. Each Splitter card uses 24 pairs of the 25 pairs available on each
50-pin connector.
The DSL Interface connectors (J1, J4, J7, J10, J13, & J16) and the LOOP Interface connectors (J2, J5, J8, J11,
J14, & J17) are oriented so that the mating plug left-angled cable head will dress out to the left side of the shelf.
Whereas, the PSTN Interface connectors (J3, J6, J9, J12, J15, & J18) are oriented so that the mating plug rightangled cable head will dress out to the right side of the shelf.
Connector Pinouts
As view from the rear of the shelf:
• ADSL signals to and from the DSLAM enter the 2144 splitter shelf using the left most telephone
connectors, designated “DSL Interface”.
• Signals to and from the LINE (outside plant) enter the 2144 splitter shelf using the centre
telephone connectors, designated “Loop Interface”.
• Cables to and from the central office switch enter the 2144 splitter shelf via the right hand
telephone connectors, designated “PSTN Interface”.
