Operating Instructions

The model number and serial number of this product can be found on either the back or the bottom of the unit. Please note them in the space provided below and keep for future reference.

Precautions

Before using this unit, be sure to read the applicable items of the operating instructions and these safety suggestions carefully. Afterwards keep them handy for future reference. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit itself as well as in the operating instructions.

Safety

1. Power Source—The unit should be connected to power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the unit. Use only the AC adaptor or car adaptor described in the operating instructions when recharging.

2. Polarization—If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will ﬁt into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to ﬁt, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

3. Care of AC adaptor— Take care that the cord of the AC adaptor should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them. Never take hold of the AC adaptor if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when connecting or disconnecting it.

4. Nonuse Periods— When not in use, be sure to disconnect the AC adaptor from the AC power outlet.

5. Batteries— If the set is not used for a long period of time or is used only from an AC power source, remove all the batteries to prevent potential damage due to possible battery leakage. Do not mix batteries (old and new) or different types of batteries.

Installation

∫ Environment

1. Water and Moisture—Do not use this unit near

water—for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the like. Damp basements should also be avoided.

2. Condensation—Moisture may form on the lens in the following conditions.

2. ≥immediately after a heater has been turned on.

2. ≥in a steamy or very humid room.

2. ≥when the unit is suddenly moved from a cold envi-

ronment to a warm one. If moisture forms inside this unit, it may not operate properly. To correct this problem wait about one hour for the moisture to evaporate.

3. Heat—Never use or place this unit near a heat source. Do not leave it in an automobile exposed to direct sunlight for a long time with the doors and windows closed as this may deform the cabinet.

∫ Placement

1. Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that ob-

jects do not fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject this unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.

2. Magnetism— The unit should be situated away from equipment or devices that generate strong magnetic ﬁelds.

3. Stacking— Do not place any objects, on top of the unit.

Maintenance

(See page 7 for details.) Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.

Service

1. Damage Requiring Service—The unit should be serviced by qualiﬁed service personnel when:

1. (a) The AC adaptor is damaged; or

1. (b) Objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled

into the unit; or

1. (c) The unit has been exposed to rain; or

1. (d) The unit does not appear to operate normally or

exhibits a marked change in performance; or

1. (e) The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure

damaged.

2. Servicing—The user should not attempt to service the unit beyond that described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to an authorized service personnel.

Concerning Compact Discs

Only compact discs bearing this mark can be used with this unit.

However, continued use of irregular shape CDs can damage the unit.

If moisture has formed on a disc

When moisture has formed because the disc was brought suddenly into a warm room from a cold environment, wipe it off using a soft dry cloth.

When storing discs

Avoid locations which are

≥Exposed to direct sunlight. ≥Susceptible to high levels of humidity or dust. ≥Directly exposed to heat from a heating appli-

ance.

≥On top of a car dashboard or near the rear

window.

Handling precautions

≥On the label side (the side with writing)

≥Do not write anything using a pencil, ball-

point pen, etc. Do not stick paper or labels.

≥On the disc (shiny) side

≥Handle this side carefully to keep it free from

ﬁngerprints or scratches. Do not use record cleaners, solvents, etc.

≥Do not attach labels or stickers to CD’s.

≥Do not use CDs with exposed adhesive from

tape or left over peeled off stickers.

≥Do not use scratch-proof protectors or covers

other than those speciﬁed for use with this unit.

If the surface is dirty

Wipe it with a damp cloth and then wipe dry. Wipe from the center toward the outer circumference.

Power Supply Preparations

Refer to the speciﬁcations (page 8) for information on operating times when using rechargeable batteries or dry-cell batteries.

Using the AC adaptor

Connect the AC adaptor supplied.

Using rechargeable batteries

Make sure to recharge the batteries before using them. The unit cannot be used to charge rechargeable batteries other than those specially designed for it.

Recharging procedure

1 Insert the special rechargeable bat-

teries into the unit.

2 Connect the AC adaptor.

(Refer to “Using the AC adaptor” for connection instructions.) Recharging starts and the “H

” charging indicator ﬂashes on and off on the unit’s display panel. When the rechargeable batteries fully recharge the charging indicator disappears.

3 When recharging is complete, un-

plug the AC adaptor from the power outlet and the DC IN jack.

Note!

≥It takes approximately 3 hours to fully recharge the

supplied rechargeable batteries.

≥Rechargeable batteries have a service life of approxi-

mately 300 charge-discharge cycles. If the operating time on one full charge becomes noticeably shorter than it used to be, the battery has reached the end of its service life and should be replaced.

≥Recharging may only be performed when the unit is

powered off. (It is not possible to recharge the batteries while playing a CD.)

≥The AC adaptor and rechargeable batteries may be-

come warm while recharging is in progress. This is not a malfunction.

Using the car adaptor

Be sure to obtain the car adaptor (SH-CDC9) available as an optional accessory. The car adaptor can be used to recharge the unit’s batteries while in the car.

Using dry-cell batteries (not included)

After disconnecting the AC adaptor, insert two “AA” (LR6) alkaline batteries.

The procedure for inserting and removing dry-cell batteries is identical to that for rechargeable batteries.

Battery indicator

This indicator ﬂashes on and off when the batteries are almost out of power. Power is cut off completely a short while later.

Rechargeable batteries: Recharge batteries. Dry-cell batteries: Replace batteries with new ones.

Note!

≥The length of time the unit will continue to operate be-

tween when the battery indicator starts ﬂashing and when the power is cut off differs depending on the type of batteries used.

≥The battery indicator may not ﬂash if rechargeable

batteries, other than those designated by Panasonic, are used.

Removing batteries

Push up on the battery in the direction indicated by the arrow. Then lift it out.

If the battery lid comes loose

Slide the lid back into place horizontally.

HOLD Function

This function causes the unit to ignore short, accidental button presses. (The disc lid can still be opened and closed.)

The HOLD function prevents the following:

≥Powering on the unit accidentally

(which can cause the batteries to go dead).

≥Play being cut off unexpectedly in the

middle of a selection.

To use the HOLD function

Set [HOLD] to the HOLD position.

“(” indication

When the unit is in hold status, pressing any button (other than the OPEN button) causes the indication “(” to appear on the display.

When the unit is powered off

The “(” indication appears only when [1;] is pressed.

Before operating the buttons

Be sure to move HOLD to release the unit from the hold mode.

If the unit malfunctions or freezes during use, then disconnect the power sources (the AC adaptor and batteries). Re-connect the power source and continue operation.

Basic Play

Follow steps 1–6.

In step 4, connect the stereo headphones to the Ë jack. (Plug in ﬁrmly.) ≥Play stops automatically when all the tracks have been played. ≥If the unit has been connected to the car audio system, adjust the volume level between 4 and 6 on the unit, then

adjust the volume level on the system.

For your reference: “)” indication

This indication appears for about 30 seconds if [1;] is pressed when no disc is loaded in the unit or if the disc is not completely seated.

“*” indication

This indication appears for about 10 minutes when the cover is opened. (However, the indication does not appear when the unit is powered off.)

Note!

Never insert foreign objects into the unit body.

Removing discs

After the disc has stopped rotating, press [PUSH] to release the disc. (To protect the disc, never open the cover while it is playing.)

≥During program play (page 4), these buttons are

used to skip forward or back through the programmed sequence of tracks.

≥During random play (page 4), the skip buttons

cannot be used to skip back to tracks that were played previously in the random sequence.

≥During program play, random play or 1 track re-

peat play (page 4), search operation is limited to the current track only.

Press during play.

Press during stop mode.

Press during play.

Press again to restart play.

Keep depressed during play.

Auto power off function

If the unit is left in stop or paused status for approximately 10 minutes, the unit powers itself off automatically in order to prevent the battery from running down. (If no disc is loaded in the unit, it powers itself off in 30 seconds.)
