PAN02PRO
DI BOX ACTIVE
A DI box is used to change an unbalanced, high impedance line level signal to a balanced low impedance signal for connection to a microphone input. An unbalanced high impedance cable routing is susceptible to hum and other noise. The cable length is limited because with longer cables, not only does the noise level rise, but due to cable capacitance, you can also expect a loss of highs. These problems are avoided with low impedance balanced signal routing. For this reason, this type of routing is used almost exclusively in professional studios and for live performances. The PAN02 PRO is an active DI box. It can be operated on phantom power on the console, as well as via a 9 V battery. As an active device, the PAN02 PRO can also amplify the signal: therefore, it provides not only mic level, but also line level at the output.

CONNECTORS
Line level signals, such as those from keyboards, are connected via a shielded instrument cable with jack plug (6.3 mm mono jack/TS jack) into the jack labelled "Input". In addition, there is also an unbalanced switchable XLR/f input (PIN 1+3 = ground, PIN 2 = hot). With the PAN02 PRO, unbalanced XLR inputs can thus be converted into balanced outputs, for example. If the signal is to be simultaneously connected to a different amplifier, use the "Link" jack as a parallel connector for looping the signal. All unbalanced cables should not be longer than is absolutely necessary. Therefore, the PAN02 PRO should optimally be placed near the unbalanced source. The low impedance balanced output signal is available on the rear panel XLR/m socket. The assignment of the connector is compliant with standards (PIN 2 = hot, PIN 3 = cold) . The connection to a mixer input is performed with a balanced, shielded microphone cable. The cable length is not critical and may be 100 feet or more, without an audible deterioration of the signal.
POWER SUPPLY
As mentioned above, the PAN02 can be powered by a 9 V battery as well as through the existing phantom power (48 V) available in many mixing consoles. Turn the ON/OFF switch to the desired position. A control LED above the switch lights up green when phantom power is present and red when power is supplied by a 9 V battery. An alkaline 9 V battery (6LR61) or higher must be available in the battery compartment. (Caution: when loading, be aware of the correct polarity as marked). The PAN02 PRO has an internal voltage transformer, which converts the different sources to the required supply voltage. If you operate the PAN02 PRO at the output with LINE level, the box should preferably be powered with a 9 V battery. By design, phantom power supplies only a limited amount of power, which may result in a signal limitation at the output. Usually LINE inputs do not provide phantom power. The status LED is located in the current path of the PAN02 PRO. Depending on sensitivity, the brightness may vary slightly.
PAD SWITCH 10 DB + 20 DB
Unlike passive DI boxes, there is no signal loss between input and output of the PAN02 PRO. This may be overridden by a connected microphone input on a mixing console. Therefore, a three-stage circuit is available for level reduction. The -10 dB PAD pressure switch attenuates the signal accordingly. A greater reduction is achieved by the -20 dB PAD switch. If both switches are pressed simultaneously, the input signal is reduced by 10 dB + 20 dB = 30 dB.

6
GAIN +12d
At low input levels, especially if the output of the PAN02 PRO requires a LINE signal, the amplification of the box may be raised by 12 dB by pressing the switch so labelled. One conceivable scenario would be if a device connected at the input, providing only a semi-professional -10 dBV level, requires +4 dBu/6 dBu on the output for studio purposes. Please note that unnecessary gain increases the noise level.
GROUND LIFT/SOFT GROUND
The design of the PAN02 PRO with an output transformer allows a separation of the ground connection between input and output. The galvanic isolation prevents ground loops, which occur by double grounding (e.g. when an instrument is grounded via a European Schuko plug and a grounded mixer). In the simplest case, the ground lift switch should be operated by ear. As a rule of thumb, for devices that are grounded via their power supply, the switch should be placed in the LIFT position and for battery powered instruments, the GND position should be used. In the SOFT GND position, the masses are not directly connected to each other, but a "soft" ground occurs instead via a capacitor. It is a fact that many digital devices carry high frequency on the ground line. In order to effectively avoid these high frequencies, which often make a whirring noise in the audio system, a ground via a capacitor is sufficient. Thus, the device is grounded for high frequency, but for the 50 Hz mains frequency, the capacitor represents a sufficiently large resistance. Thus, ground loops are effectively prevented. So if the sound card of a computer is connected to the audio system using a DI box, the SOFT GND position can yield the optimal solution.

DI-BOX AKTIV
ANWENDUNGSBEREICH
