ThesimulatefunctionwithinESAcanprovidea valuablediagnosistool.Toensuresafeoperation, certainCECUoutputsarenotaccessiblefor simulationsuchas:cruisecontrol,engineoil pressureandtheparkbrakeswitch.
Simulationofgaugesisalsonotpermittedifthe engineisrunning.
ReplacingtheCECUresultsintheodometer beingreset.T akeappropriateactiontorecordthe vehiclemilespriortoremovingtheCECU.
CAUTION
Interruptingthecommunicationorpowersupply duringacontrolunitreashcouldresultin hardwaredamage.
ESArecognizeswhenasoftwareupdateis requiredonaconnectedvehicle.Ifforsome reasontheuserchoosesnottoreashthecontrol unit,ESAtriggersawarningdisplay.TheLCD backlightingofthespeedometerandoutsideair temperatureblinkfor1minute.Thewarningis triggeredateverykey-onofthevehicleuntilthe requiredupdateisperformedtoalerttheoperator orothertechniciansthatavehiclereashis required.
ESAautomaticallyidentiestheversionofCECU hardwarewhenconnected,andonlypermits softwaredownloadsthatareapplicableforthat controlunit.Softwareversionsarenotbackwards compatible;avehicleisrenderedinoperativeif aCECUwithoutthecorrectsoftwareversionis installed.
InstrumentationServiceInformationdescribing howtoremove,disassemble,andreinstall instrumentationcomponentsislocated onServiceNet.Beforeattemptingany instrumentationrepairs,thetechnicianshould haveacompleteunderstandingoftheprocedures describedinServiceNet.
Thismanualcontainsservicemanualinformation coveringvehiclesequippedwithsoftwareversion "CECU3withChassisNode"(P30-1011).For vehicleswithpriorCECUsoftwareversions(such as:"CECU3withChassisNode"(P30-1009), CECU3(P30-1008),ICU(P30-1003),and CECU/CECU2(P30-1002))refertoearlier publications.
Whenreplacingachassisnode,disconnect thebatteriesanddonotreconnectthemuntil nodeinstallationandallwiringconnectionsare complete.AnewchassisnodeandtheCECU needtobepoweredupsimultaneouslyduring thenode'srstpowercycle;otherwiseafault codemessagewillappearinthemaininstrument clusterbetweenthespeedometerandtachometer. ThismessageindicatesthattheCECUisnot recognizingthepropercommunicationwiththe chassisnode.
NAMUX4incorporatessoftwareintheCECU alongwithsoftwareintheinstrumentcluster. Thesesoftwareversionswilloftenbelinked togetherwhichwillrequirebothunitstoget updatedshouldtheothergetupdated.ESAwill prompttheuserifsucharequirementisneeded.
ChecktheprogrammenuwithinESAtoseeif aninoperativefeatureisdisabled.Thisisvery importantwhendiagnosinganinoperativephysical gaugeonaCECUequippedvehicle.Thegauge mayhavebeenpreviouslydisabled.

MultiplexingOverview

Thismanualprovidesserviceinformation coveringtrucksequippedwiththemultiplexed instrumentationsystem.Beforeattemptingto makeservicerepairs,thetechnicianshould beknowledgeableaboutthesystemdesign, components,operationandtroubleshooting proceduresfordiagnosingmultiplexed instrumentationproblems.
Howcommunicationworksinamultiplexsystem: Eachmajorsubsysteminthetruck’selectrical systemisoperatedbyacontrolmodulethatsends andreceivesdatatoandfromacentralhub computer.Thecentralhubcomputeriscalledthe CECU(CabElectronicControlUnit).Sincewe’re intothethirdgenerationnow,wesometimescall itCECU3.
TheCECUreceivesdatarelatedtocontrollingthe variousdevicesoftheelectricalsystem.Itthen makesdecisionsbasedonthatinputandsends informationtoeachofthesubsystemsystem controlmodules(nodes)aboutwhatthatnode shoulddowiththecomponentsitcontrols.

Identifyingwhichcontrolunitisinthevehiclehelps determinewhatfeaturesarepresentandalsoaids introubleshooting.
Thisnewgenerationincorporatesmuchofthe samearchitecturefrompreviousdesignswith addeddatacommunicationswithmorecontrol modules.Thesoftwarehasbeenupgradedto incorporateinterlockstoensuresafety,maximize vehicleperformanceandsimplifydriverinteraction.

Wheninitiated,theELSTtogglesbetweentwo exteriorlightingsequences.TheELSTteststhe functionalityofcertainexteriorlights.
TheELSTcanbeactivatedfromadashswitch thatisaccessiblefromoutsidethecaborbythe optionalremotekeylesskeyfobtransmitter.

Thecabdimmerswitchisamomentaryup/down dashswitchthatallowstheusertoraiseorlower thedashbacklightingilluminationlevels.
Thevehiclehasadaytimebrightnesssettingthat isindependentofthenighttimebrightnesssetting.
DoorControls
TheDoorControlSystem(DCS)operateswith CECUelectricalarchitecturetoenabletheuserto raise/lowerthedoorwindows,lock/unlockdoor locks,adjustmirrorposition,andactivatemirror heat.
BodyCAN

DisabledGauges
WiththeCECU,disablingacomponent turnsthecomponentoffcompletely.The disabledcomponentisremovedfromallsignal transmissionsinordertoallowtheotherfeatures onthevehiclefastercommunication.Adisabled gaugewillnotfunctionorcommunicatewiththe controlunit.
NOTE
Checktheprogrammenutoseeifaninoperative featureisdisabled.Thisisveryimportantwhen diagnosinganinoperativegaugeonaCECU equippedvehicle.Thegaugemayhavebeen previouslydisabled.
Whenaservicetechnicianinstallsanoptional gaugeinthemultiplexedinstrumentationsystem, thenewlyinstalledgaugewillinitiallybedisabled. Becausethegaugeisnotfactory-installed,the technicianmustprogramtheCECUtomonitorit. UntiltheCECUisprogrammed,thelinkbetween theCECUandthegaugeistermed“disabled”– thatis,theCECUispreventedfromdetecting errors,andalsofromlogginganddisplaying diagnostictroublecodes(DTCs).
ToprogramtheCECUandenablegauges,select “Program”.Ifthegaugevalueis“Disable”,change itto“Enable”.
OncetheCECUisprogrammedandthelinkto thegaugeis“enabled”,theCECUmonitorsit, diagnoseserrorslike“shorts”and“opens”,logs DTCsfortroubleshooting,anddisplaystheDTCs onESA’s“Diagnose”screen.

VehiclecomponentinputsaresenttotheCECU throughtheJ1939databusesorconventional wiring.TheCECUinterpretsthevariousinputs andmonitors/controlsthefunctionsforeachinput throughtheCECUsoftware.Outputmessages fromtheCECUprovidedataforthegauges, warninglamps,audiblealarms,anddisplays insidethecluster.Additionally,theCECUprovides outputfortheHVACcontroller.
TheCECUreceivesdatarelatedtocontrollingthe variousdevicesoftheelectricalsystem.Itthen makesdecisionsbasedonthatinputandsends informationtosubsystemcontrolmodulesabout whatthatsystemshoulddowiththecomponents itcontrols.
CECUArchitecture
Thesoftwareprogrammingofthecontrolunitcan begroupedintothreemaintypes:
RunTime(RT)-whichactsastheoperating systemwhereallcommunicationtakesplace.
ProgrammableLogicController(PLC)Code­manufacturerspecicprogrammedcodeand softwarethatisdeveloped,accessibleand editable.
VendorModule-blocksofcodethatare developedforspecicmanufacturersto allowotherfeaturestobeimplementedmore efciently.
Currently,ESAcanlookatallinformationthatis communicatedbetweentheRTandPLCCode portionsoftheCECUsoftware.Anysignals, whethertheyareinputs,outputs,ordataline signals,sentbetweentheRTandPLCCodeare visibletoESA.Thesearethesignalsthatmaybe monitoredandsimulatedusingESA.
WhenusedinconjunctionwiththeElectronic ServiceAnalyst(ESA)diagnosticsoftwaretool, thetechniciancanreviewfaultcodesstoredin theCECU,verifywhethertheinstrumentationis workingproperlyanddiagnosetherootcauseof theproblemmoreeasily.
LimitationswithESAarefoundinthe communicationswiththepre-developedVendor Modules.Currentlythisinformationisnotvisible toESA.SomefeaturesthathaveVendorModule programming,suchastheodometerandthe messagedisplay,arenotavailabletomonitor and/orsimulatethroughESA.
TheCECUwillacceptJ1939signalsfromthe B-CANandaverylimitedselectionofsignalson theV-CAN.Diagnosticcodesforthesedevices arenotcontainedinthisservicemanual.
TheBCANisdesignedtoacceptcustomer installeddevicesthroughaconnectorontheCAN wire.DevicesinstalledontheBCANMUSTuse theprovidedconnectortofunctionproperly .Any devicethatissplicedintotheCANwirewillnot functionproperly.
TheVCANisdesignedwithconnectorsforan optionaltelematicsdevice.Anytelematicsdevice connectedtoaCANwireotherthantheVCANwill notfunctionproperly .Notalltelematicdeviceswill berecognizedbytheCECU.

tothespecicrequirementsofthetruckbeing assembled.Oncethechassisnodehasreceived itscongurationparameters,itstorestheminash memorypermanentlyanddoesnotrequireany additionaldownloadsfromtheCECU.Thisisa onetimeevent,andoncecomplete,thechassis nodecanberemovedandreinstalledwithoutthe needofapowercycle.
NOTE
Whenreplacingachassisnode,disconnectthe batteriesanddonotreconnectthemuntilthe newnodeinstallationandallwiringconnections arecomplete.Anewchassisnodeandthe CECUneedtobepoweredupsimultaneously duringthenode'srstpowercycle;otherwise afaultontheinformationdisplaywillindicate thattheCECUisnotrecognizingtheproper communicationwiththechassisnode.
TheproblemoccurswhentheCECUandchassis nodearenotpoweredupsimultaneouslyduring therstpowercycle.Thismayhappenfora varietyofreasonswhichinclude;missingchassis node,missingfuses,harnessingnotconnected, etc.IftheCECUrecognizesthatthechassisnode isnotcommunicatingasexpected,itwilltriggera faultintheinformationdisplay .Cyclingtheignition willnotcorrectthisproblemsincetheparameter leisonlytransmittedtothechassisnodeaftera completebatterypowercycle.

Functionaldescription
TheEOASystemisdescribedasthefollowing: electricalswitchessendalogicsignaltothe CECUthatsigniesastatechangeintheair function.TheCECUinputstheswitchstates andappliesasoftwareinterlock,ifapplicable, toensurethatalldenedparametersforthe specicinterlockaremetbeforeallowingthe functiontochangestates.Oncetheinterlock conditionshavebeenmet,theCECUsendsan SAEJ1939multiplexedmessagetotheChassis Node.TheChassisNodeacceptsthemultiplexed messageandactivates/deactivatesthedesired outputcorrespondingtoaspecicaccessoryair solenoid.Thefollowingtableprovidesalistofall aircontrolsthatalsocontainaCECUsoftware interlockcondition.Thetabledoesnotinclude anyinterlocksprogrammedintootherECU's (suchastheTransmissionorEngineECU)or anymechanicalinterlocksdesignedintotheair system.Thesecondcolumnwillshowwhat conditionmustbetruefortheaircontroltofunction andthelastcolumnprovidesprogrammablelimits iftheparameteriscongurable.Iftheinterlock isnotprogrammable,thenthecellhasbeenleft blank.Ifaninterlockhasbeenactivated,the instrumentclusterwillprovideoperatorinstructions onhowtoresolvetheinterlock.
