ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
Please read instructions before using your barbecue.
BEFORE YOU USE YOUR BARBECUE (also see installation)
Perform a leak test. This is the only safe and sure way to detect any gas leaking from joints and connec t ions of the barbec ue af t er as s embly . Follow the leak test inst ructions on page 20. C heck that the
gas hos e is f ree of any tension, twisting, cuts, or cracks.
Make sure y our barbecue is in a safe plac e. It must be out doors, on level ground and not below ground lev el. Ensure that the barbecue is at least 1 metre away f rom any f lammable materials, inc luding trees
and fences and that there are no heat sources near the barbec ue (cigaret t es, open flam es, spark etc.)
Chec k that you hav e the correct gas bottle and regulator for your barbecue (see rec ommendations in the Gas and Regulator section of this manual) and that the gas bottle is placed correctly in the gas bott le holder provided. N ever place the gas bottle direct ly underneath the barbec ue.
GETTING STARTED (also see operation )
Open the hood of your barbecue. Never light your barbec ue with the hood c los ed. Turn the gas regulator or gas bottle valve to t he ‘on’ position. Push in the c ont rol knob of the burner you want t o light and t urn it
anti clockwise until resistance is felt. W ait 4 s econds and then continue turning the control knob until a click is heard. Repeat if nec essary until the burner is alight. Light all other burners in the same way
mak ing sure each burner is alight bef ore att em pting t o light the next. IF ANY BURNER FAILS TO LI GH T, TURN OFF THE GAS AT THE BURNERS AND THE GAS BOTTLE, WAIT FIVE MINUTES AND TRY AGAIN. If the burners cannot be lit using the ignition system, turn to the manual lighting instructions
under import ant inform ation.
Once t he burners are lit, turn all the burners to the high s etting for 3-5 minut es to pre-heat the barbecue. This should be done before eac h session. When pre-heating is com plet e, cook ing can begin taking extra
care if the burners are us ed in the high pos it ion.
To prevent food sticking we recommend that you use a long handled brush to apply a light coat of cook ing oil to the grills and griddles before each barbecue s ession.
Flare-ups may occur during cooking and can be controlled by apply ing s alt direct ly onto the lav a rock making sure your hand s are prote cted from the hea t.
If a f at fire should occur during c ooking, and if safe to do so, turn off t he burners and t he gas at the gas bottle and wait for the fire to go out. Do not pull out the drip tray or douse with water.
Nev er douse a barbecue with water.
Nev er move a barbec ue when lit.
Nev er leave a lit barbecue unattended.
Nev er handle hot parts with unprotect ed hands.
Keep children, animals, and elderly people a safe distance from a lit barbecue.
WH EN YOU HAVE F INISHED COOKING (also see Maintenanc e)
Turn all the burners t o t he high position for 3 to 5 minutes to burn off any food residue from t he cooking surf ac es and burners. W hen the barbec ue has c ooled, t he burnt residue c an be easily removed using a
damp, non abrasive cloth on the cooking surfaces and a wire brush on the burners. Never use any abrasiv e material on porc elain finis hes. The grills and griddles are not dishwasher safe.
We do not recomm end washing lava rock, the step described abov e should remov e m ost f ood residue from the lava rock.
When t he barbecue has cooled, scrape away any f ood and f at residue from the drip t ray and discard. Empty and clean the F oil Liner. These rout ines must be complet ed af t er each session.
STOR AGE
Ensure t he barbecue is properly c ooled.
Alway s dis connect the gas bottle and store it in a safe place, never store a gas bot tle indoors or on it s side.
Store t he barbecue in a cool dry plac e. The det ac hable s ide s helf c an be remov ed to save spac e during storage.
Cov er the burners with foil to k eep the burner holes free from insects or other debris.
If you intend t o leave your barbec ue outside mak e sure it is protect ed from the elements by a heavy duty
19
cov er, these are av ailable f rom most Outback® stockists.
Even when your barbecue is covered for its prot ect ion, it must be inspected on a regular basis as dam p or condensation can f orm which may result in damage t o the barbecue. It m ay be necessary to dry the barbecue and the inside of t he cov er. Any rus t that is f ound that does not com e into contact with t he food
should be t reated with a rust inhibitor and painted with barbecue paint or a heat res is t ant paint. W ooden parts may als o need to be cleaned and treat ed. Chrome plated warming racks etc. s hould be c oat ed with
cook ing oil. Wrap the burners in aluminium foil to help prev ent insects or other debris f rom obst ructing the burners.
The gas bottle must be alway s be disconnected from the barbecue and stored in a well v entilat ed area at least 1 metre away from any fixed ignition source. Do not s t ore inside residential accommodation. Never
store cylinder s below ground le vel (e.g . cellars) . Do not le t children tamper with bo ttle s.
IMPORTANT IN FORMATION
This product is for outdoor use only. Do not use indoors. Do not use below ground lev el.
Do not store Gas bottles below ground level. LP gas is heavier than air s o if a leak occurs the gas will collec t at a low lev el and could ignite in the pres enc e of a flam e or s park.
Do not store or use LP gas bottles on their side as this could allow liquid gas into the s upply pipes with serious results.
Leak t est your barbecue annually. Check the hos e connections are tight and leak test each time y ou reconnec t the gas bottle.
Alway s turn of f the gas at the gas bott le when not in use.
Do not use aerosols near t his barbec ue.
GAS, REGULATOR AND HOSE
This barbecue, hose, (and regulator, if included), are approved for use in the UK. The barbecue is also approved for use in ot her countr ies as list ed on t he cont rol panel and in t he Technical Specific ations included in the barbecue manual. If the barbecue is int ended t o be used outside of t he UK, the cons um er MUST s eek
advice from the local qualified gas supplier as to the suitability of the barbecue and with regards to the correc t hose and regulat or that they should be using.
This barbecue can run on propane or butane LPG (liquid petroleum gas) bottled gas. For optimal perf ormance we recommend the use of propane gas which is supplied under a num ber of different names and bott le colours. Butane gas can be used but it may restrict the heat output av ailable f rom the burners,
partic ularly when the gas tem perature f alls below +10 degrees Celsius. If in doubt, please consult your gas dealer/distributor.
For opt imal perform anc e, we sugges t the following:
Suitable regulat or: Butane – outlet pressure 28-30mbar
Propane – outlet pressure 37mbar The use of an adjustable regulat or is dangerous and must nev er be used with this barbecue.
Hose
Chec k that the gas hose does not touc h any part of t he barbec ue that may bec ome hot during operat ion.
If the hose shows any sign of damage it must be replaced with a hose that is suitable for use with LPG (liquid petroleum gas) and m eets Britis h Standards.
The length of hos e should not exc eed 1.5 metres.

INSTALLATION
Precautions:
Only us e this barbecue in a well-v entilat ed out door area.
Chec k that the barbec ue is not placed UNDER any c ombustible surface.
The sides of the barbecue should never be c loser than 1 metre to any c om bust ible material.
Do not obstruct any v ent ilation openings in the barbecue body
Conf irm all cont rol knobs are in t he off position bef ore connecting the regulator.
Alway s connect the regulator in acc ordanc e with the regulator and gas bottle suppliers inst ructions.
LEAK TESTIN G
Alway s perform a leak test in a well-ventilated area.

Repeat test
If bubbles form again do not use the barbecue and c ontact y our local Outback dealer f or assistanc e or call Outback custom er servic es on (01622) 671771. Cust omer services are av ailable during normal
off ic e hours, Monday t o Friday, 9am t o 5pm.
OPER ATION
Y our barbecue is not designed to be used with more than 50% of t he cooking area as a solid plate – this includes baking dishes. If more than 50% of your cooking area is covered by a solid cooking surf ac e, the
barbecue c ould overheat caus ing damage that is not c overed by warranty.
Grill cooking
The cast iron burners heat the lava rock beneath the grill that, in turn, heats the food. The nat ural juices produced during cooking fall onto the lava rock and vaporise to form smoke. The smoke then rises and ‘bast es ’ the f ood, giving it that unique barbec ued flavour.
When us ing your barbecue for grill cook ing y ou m ay wish t o place the hood in t he clos ed position which will hold the heat in to aid cook ing.
Gri ddle plate coo ki ng
The cast iron burners heat the griddle plat e directly, which then cooks the f ood on contact. Griddle plates enable the cooking of smaller items that would, otherwise, fall through the grill. They can also be used f or
searing c uts of m eat or cooking food like eggs that would not be pos s ible to cook on a grill. Griddles can also be used to heat pans.
Roas t ing (ho oded barbec ue s only)
If y our barbecue is supplied with a roasting hood rather than a lid y ou are able to roast or bake in a similar way as in a c onv entional gas ov en. For best results place the f ood y ou wish to bake or roast in a m etal baking tray and set it on one side of the cooking grill. Turn the burners directly under t he f ood t o the ‘OFF’
21
posit ion and the burners opposite the f ood t o the ‘Medium’ setting. Clos e t he hood and this will form an oven to c ook the food ‘indirectly’. Monitor the temperature using the heat indicator on the hood. If t he internal heat becomes too high, turn t he burners t o the ‘low’ position. It is not necess ary or adv isable to have all of
the burners on high when t he hood is closed. If t he hood is opened during cook ing to check on the progress of t he food, please allow extra cooking time f or the barbecue to regain its temperature. Take care when opening the hood as hot steam can be released on opening.
War ming Rack
Warm ing racks are a convenient way to k eep cook ed food warm or to warm items such as bread rolls. It is advisable to place food t o the f ront of t he warming rac k to avoid the poss ibility of juices and fat running down
the back of your barbecue. Alway s check that your warming rack is properly fitt ed before use.
Fl ar e-up control
Flare-ups will of ten occur when f ood is barbecued as f at and juices f all ont o the lav a rock. Some f at is neces s ary to give the food its barbec ued flav our but exc ess ive fat can res ult in a flare-up. To avoid f lare-ups
it is advisable to trim exc ess f at from meat and poultry before grilling, use cooking sauces and m arinades sparingly, and tr y to a void ver y cheap cuts o f meat or meat products a s these tend to have high fat and water cont ents. Flare-ups can be extinguis hed by applying salt directly onto the flaring lav a rocks, taking care to
protect your sel f fro m the flame s.
Fat Fire s
The Foil Liner must be emptied and the drip t ray cleaned of food debris after each cooking session. If the barbecue is to be used f or c ommercial use or large gatherings, it will be necessary to turn off and cool the
barbecue ev ery two hours to remov e food debris from the drip tray and clean out the Foil Liner, the time between cleaning m ay need to be reduced if v ery fatty f oods or cheap meat products are being cooked. Failure t o do t his may result in a fat fire, which may cause injury and c ould seriously dam age the barbecue.
In the event of a fat fire;
I f sa fe to do so , turn al l co n tr o l kno bs to th e ‘off’ po siti o n .
Turn off the gas at the gas bot t le.
Keep everyone at a s af e distanc e from the barbecue and wait until the fire has burnt out.
Do not close the hood of t he barbec ue.
NEVER DOUSE A BARBECUE WITH WATER. IF AN EXTINGUISH ER IS USED, IT SHOULD BE A POWD ER TYPE.
DO NOT REMOVE THE DRIP TRAY.
If the f ire does not seem to be abat ing or appears to be worsening, contact your local Fire Brigade f or assistance.
M a nua l igni t ion ins t ruct ions
Ins ert a long, lit match through the m at c h-lighting hole in t he right hand side of the body of the barbec ue until the lit end is alongside the right hand burner. Push and turn the right hand control knob anti-
clockwise to the high position taking care to protect yourself from f lames.
When t he burner is lit turn the remaining burners from right t o left .
Conf irm that each burner is lit bef ore turning on the nex t burner.
If the right hand burner fails to light, turn off the gas and contact your local Outback dealer or our custo mer services dep ar tmen t on (01622) 671771 fo r assistance.
MAINTENANCE
n
Nev er handle hot parts of the BBQ with unprotected hands.
n
Nev er douse the BBQ with water when its surf aces are hot .
General
Regularly clean your BBQ bet ween us es and es pec ially aft er extended periods of st orage.
D o not le av e t he B B Q un c ov e re d a nd e x p os ed t o t he e lem e nt s wh e n n ot i n u s e. H e av y d u ty c ov er s a re av ailable as an accessory f rom your Outback ® stockist. Even when y our barbecue is cov ered f or its
protec t ion, it must be inspec t ed on a regular basis as damp or c ondensat ion can f orm which may res ult in damage to the barbecue. I t m ay be necessary t o dry the barbec ue and the inside of the c ov er. Any rust
22
that is found that does not come into contact with the food should be treat ed with a rust inhibitor and painted with barbecue paint or a heat resistant paint. Wooden parts may also need to be cleaned and treat ed. Chrome plated warming racks etc. should be coat ed with cook ing oil.
Lava rock can be cleaned by light ing the burners on full for 3 to 5 minutes. This s hould be done with the hood in the raised position. Heav ily impregnated lav a rock should be turned ov er so that the dirty s ide
faces the burners in order t o burn of f any res idue. We do not rec omm end washing lava rock.
The wooden shelf, shelf insert and bottom slats are made from hardwood ideally suited to outside condit ions. Hardwood will naturally weather and change its appearance and it is quite natural for small
crac ks to appear on t he surface of t he wood. The wood s hould be regularly inspected and any weathered or damaged s urfaces should be recoated prom pt ly with Yac ht v arnish or an ext ernal grade Poly uret hane
varnish. Follow the varnis h manufacturer’s inst ructions for preparation and applic at ion.
All screws and bolts should be checked and t ightened if necessary on a regular bas is.
Burn er Removal
To remove the burners (see photos ):
1. Rem ov e the burner c lip.
2. Lift the burner upwards.
3. Gently pull the burner m out h away from the valve injec t or.
4. Lift the burner out. To re-install the burners (not depicted):
1. Slide the burner mouth over the valve injector. The inject or should sit centrally within the burner v enturi tube.
2. Lower the burner into the body.
3. Insert the locating stud through the support.
Lock into place by inserting the burner c lip through the s t ud.
Your burners have been preset for optimal flame performance. You will normally see a blue f lame, poss ibly with a small y ellow t ip when the burner is alight. If the f lam e pattern is significantly yellow, this
could be a problem caused by grease from cooking blocking the burner or spiders or ot her insects in the burner venturi. This can result in the flow of the gas and air m ixture being restricted or bloc k ed which may
result in a fire behind the control panel causing s erious dam age to your barbec ue. If this happens, the gas should be immedi atel y turned off at th e bo ttle.
Burners s hould be ins pected and cleaned on a regular basis in addition t o the f ollowing conditions:
1. Bringing the barbecue out of storage.
2. One or more of t he burners do not ignite.
3. The burner f lame pattern i s signi fi cantl y yellow.
4. The gas ignites behind the control panel.
To clean a burner, rem ove it f rom t he barbecue. It is quite norm al f or a cast iron burner to rust. The outs ide of the burner can be c leaned with a wire brus h.
