READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLING YOUR GUARDIAN™
NOTICE: Orion Guardian™ offers extreme flexibility in monitoring and tracking mobile and fixed assets that are self-powered, powered by one or more auxiliary systems, or completely unpowered. External power sources offering between 7.5v and 36v DC can either be regulated (e.g., battery) or unregulated (e.g., solar panel). Suggested voltage is either 12 or 24vDC. This power source could be via a connection to your asset’s fuse panel or to some other power source. Depending upon the Guardian™ features you wish to install, you may need to make connections to your asset’s fuse panel. In the event you plan to connect to the fuse panel, please confirm with the manufacturer that Guardian™ will not void any warranties before you make any Guardian™ connection to your asset. Since your Guardian™ communicates via radio signal(s), you may experience “dead zones” which are areas where Guardian™ cannot provide data to the Guardian™ software portal. A number of factors can create dead zones which may exist even in locations in which a wireless carrier offers coverage, due to limitations in wireless network architecture (the locations of antennas), where you located the Guardian™ antennae, limited network density, interference with other transmission towers, topography, large buildings, terrain, trees, or other objects between the phone and the nearest base station antennas, or otherwise factors beyond the responsibilities of Guardian™ manufacturers or their vendors, employers, management, directors, officers, consultants or others. Your use and acceptance of Guardian™ is subjected to your independent confirmation that you assume all risks of harm to equipment or people and that you agree to our End User License Agreement (EULA), a copy of which is found online at:

Quick Start Checklist
Skip this section if you are unfamiliar with installing and operating Guardian™.
Congratulations of selecting Guardian™, the most advanced tracking, monitoring, and reporting system for Personal Owned Vehicles, light trucks, and small automobile fleets. If you ordered Guardian™ with a factory-installed SIM, then you can get started very quickly. Let’s get going by carefully following the instructions IN ORDER below:
1. Read and understand the notices and End User License Agreement. Make sure
you will not void your asset’s warranty by installing Guardian™.
2. Make sure you ordered Guardian™ with a factory SIM installed (if not, you will
have to install a SIM with the appropriate airtime plan).
3. Plan out the location for installing Guardian™ and the 16-pin wire harness to
either the vehicle’s OBD2 connector, fuse panel, or direct to battery. Plug your 16-pin connector into the back of Guardian™, but do not connect to a live power source at this time.
a. NOTE: Guardian™ has an “outward facing” side which is marked and
should be facing in a direction that radio waves can bounce around and eventually get to/from the sky. Use the Velcro™ strap for installing
Guardian™ (usually under the dashboard) because this permits moving it to optimize the best cellular signal.
4. Connect your live power source (i.e., OBD2 connector, fuse panel, or direct to
battery)
5. Guardian™ sends information to the web portal. Use the User ID and
password or your registered email address to login at www.OrionVIS.com (click on My Orion menu). If you do not receive information in 5 minutes, check if your antenna signal is blocked.
6. Once you confirm you have the proper installation and are communicating
with the Guardian™ web portal, make sure you properly attach or tighten the controller and antenna, and that the wires and cables do not interfere with any person or cargo.

Getting to Know Your Guardian™
To get acquainted with your Guardian™, refer to the images below.
Guardian™ may come equipped with either a 16-pin wire harness that has loose wires at one end or it
could have a cable consisting of an OBD2 connector and 16-pin connector at opposite ends.
The 16-pin wire harness with loose wire ends provides a variety of options for directly connecting Guardian™ to an external power and additional vehicle systems you desire to monitor. The OBD2 cable simplifies installation, but may limit your options for monitoring various vehicle systems. For the greatest flexibility, the OBD2 cable and 16-pin wire harness are integrated, connecting only power and ground wires (red and black respectively). Wire crimps are provided for simple wire-to-wire connections.
The picture below shows the “antenna” side of Guardian™. That is, Guardian™ has an internal antenna
that is able to receive and send cellular signals through the external enclosure. If you are providing your own SIM, write the SIM DID on the label as well as store off-site in your records.

Guardian™ has no serviceable parts. It uses green and blue LED lights that flash in various sequences to indicate its operational status. No light action at all indicates that power to Guardian™ is shut-off. Even with Guardian™ connected to external power, it can be shut down by placing the end of a paper clip in
the Power keyhole and GENTLEY pressing for 3 seconds until both LED lights shut-off.
The back end of Guardian™ is where the 16-pin wire harness connector plugs in. Also in the back are two 3.5mm audio jacks used for optional upgrades for microphone and speaker.

Examples of Guardian™ in Action
Every driver is unique, especially when combined with their vehicles and driving patterns. Guardian™
offers many features that let drivers and vehicle owners better understand how, when and where they have travelled. This can affect vehicle maintenance, account for travel time, and provide peace of mind in knowing that your vehicle and its occupants are safe at all times. In the unfortunate event of trouble, Guardian™ may just be able to help save valuable time in reporting and locating your vehicle – providing insight as to a potential crash site, vehicle equipment failure, lost driver, and stolen or abandoned vehicle. Here are just a few examples of how some drivers are using their Orin VIS!
Leaving your vehicle parked for an extended stay
You’re taking a family vacation for one week and flying to your destination. You want to take your own
car because it is more convenient, especially when returning home. However, you are worried about
your car getting stolen and you been having problems with your battery. Guardian™ can give you peace
of mind. Using the anti-theft ignition lockout feature will allow you to disable your ignition switch, thwarting would-be thieves if they attempted to steal your car. Simply activate the lock-out feature through the software (using the Reports > Vehicle menu). You can create a low battery voltage warning such that you, or other individuals you choose, will receive an email or text message when your battery power is nearing the point where you will be unable to start your car. This will allow you to have your car serviced while you are gone, or make alternate arrangements to get it fixed.
Teenage Driver
Teenage drivers! Just the term invokes a chill to many parents! With Guardian™ you can monitor your teenage driver’s vehicle information and driving habits. Guardian™ can be configured to send you real-
time reports on various conditions that you select to include: speeding, driving in an area which you do
not approve, automated crash detection, problems with your vehicle’s operations. Guardian™ can help
you keep track of your teenage driver so they are safe and develop good driving habits.
Traveling Sales Rep
Perhaps you are one of the many drivers that use their car for business. Unless you write down every stop you made, mileage, and date and time, it is easy to lose track of what trips where for business and what was personal. Guardian™ lets you select date and times to recreate your driving routes and stops. You can even get the nearest US postal address of your visits. Keep these records for as long as you
subscribe to the Guardian™ service or delete them as you wish. You’ll get speed, direction, altitude,
routes traveled, stops, and vehicle operating conditions for all your trips.
Vacation Travel
Similar to the traveling sales rep, Guardian™ lets you recreate your family driving trip. Can’t remember
the name of the restaurant, lookout point, or lodge where you stayed 3 years ago? No problem with

Guardian™. Just enter your travel times and your travel routes are automatically displayed. Click on a
map marker and get the name and location of your stops!
Locked Keys in Vehicle
We, or a family member, have done it at least once, though we may not want to admit it! Locking your keys in the car can be a very time-consuming, expensive, and frustrating experience. For most vehicles,
Guardian™ can be connected to unlock the vehicle door by sending a signal using a cell phone or
computer.
Suggested Guardian™ Installation Locations
Knowing the type of vehicle you are installing Guardian™ in or on will make your overall installation quick and easy. This “host vehicle” may dictate the location and installation for your Guardian™, giving consideration to antenna, power, and other features you may be considering. Plan your installation in advance before connecting power to your Guardian™ controller. Some suggested installation options include:
Passenger cars – Install under the dashboard, under a seat, in the trunk, or in the engine
compartment (you may need the optional weatherproof enclosure).
SUVs - Install under the dashboard, under a seat, in the engine compartment, or inside a
compartment in the hatch area.
Motorcycles – Find a location that can hide the controller, offering protection against the
elements and hiding the system from view. Some areas may include inside luggage or saddle bags, dash pouch, within frame areas, and behind the license plate frame (you may need the optional weatherproof enclosure)
Off-Road Vehicles, RV’s, Trailers and Recreational Watercraft – Find a location that offers
protection against the elements and hiding the system from view. Generally, these vehicle types require the optional waterproof controller enclosure.
Welcome to Guardian™
Introduction
Guardian™ offers the most advanced tracking, monitoring, and reporting system for protecting your vehicles, drivers, and passengers. Guardian™ is a self-contained system utilizing advanced electronics, internal antenna, and internal battery. Your Guardian™ data is accessible via any internet browser (including mobile). Guardian™ offers a vast array of features and capabilities provided by the integration of four sub-systems:

1) Controller – the “main brain” of Guardian™ containing all electronics;
2) Sensors – Guardian™ has provisions for measuring many vehicle parameters as well as sending
output signals to control vehicle functions such as unlock doors, lock ignition, or trigger an alarm. Input signals can include detecting vehicle battery charge, temperature, ignition status, and other physical parameters;
3) Communications – the “air time” consisting of cellular or satellite transmission depending upon
your configuration;
4) Web Portal – Internet-based software that the user accesses to manage and control Guardian™
features, data, and reporting.
The controller is commonly referred to in the industry as “hub.” This is a physical system that is located inside your vehicle. Communications require a SIM card, similar to those in a standard cellular phone. The SIM is installed inside the controller. The airtime is a service that is included in the monthly Guardian™ subscription. Information collected by Guardian™ is transmitted to the internet cloud for processing and redirection to the web portal.
The web portal makes using Guardian™ easy while providing global access. There is no software installation. Using secure cloud-based technology, information from the controller is sent to the Guardian™ Network Operation Center where it is processed and securely sent to the web portal for access by authorized individuals or other third-party systems or computers. An internet connection and common browser is required to access the web portal.
This Manual is designed to assist you in installing Guardian™, installing the SIM (if necessary), and using the web portal. Knowing more about Guardian™ will help you maximize the productivity of your asset or fleet of assets. In general, this manual is applicable to any Guardian™ version, though some versions may have addendums and additional information.
To access the web portal, you will need a User ID which is issued to you from the factory, which you enter into the web portal login by visiting www.OrionVIS.com and clicking on My Orion. If you don’t know your User ID and/or password, use the Forgot Password option. You will need to know the email address used when you registered your Guardian™.
Security
Guardian™ incorporates several layers of security throughout the data stream. Hardware encryption occurs at the controller. Non-descript data are transmitted via wide-area networks. Wireless data are encrypted at the sensor transmitters. Finally, the Guardian™ Portal uses an encrypted browser for data input and viewing. The Portal offers a comprehensive Security Rights Manager that is configured at the factory based on license rights. This configuration controls individual user’s features and program behavior.

To configure Guardian™, view reports, and send commands, you will need access to the internet via any popular browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, and Safari. Certain features can be accessed through traditional telephony systems.

Suggested Equipment for Installing Guardian™
Guardian™ is designed to be installed using a limited set of common tools. The following tools are recommended for the typical Guardian™ installation. Additional tools maybe necessary depending on the host asset and optional Guardian™ features.

Wiring Diagrams

If you plan to monitor additional vehicle equipment with Guardian™, it is important that you read the following section and understand how to properly connect Guardian™ to electrical and physical systems in your vehicle.

The digital and analog inputs can be used to detect electrical signals from a menu of asset components and sensors to detect a variety of events such as alternator charging, battery voltage, airbag deployment, ignition on/off, alarm system triggered, headlights on, and much more.
The digital outputs can provide roughly 5vDC at a maximum of 50mA to be used to trigger such features as: toggling power door locks (on/off); controlling an ignition “kill” switch (such as the optional Anti­Theft Ignition Lock); triggering alarms, or controlling other features that may be available in or on the asset.

Wiring Considerations
Connecting power
Guardian™ requires a 7.5 – 30vDC power supply for safe and continuous power. It contains a powerful Lithium-Ion internal battery for limited operations in the event of a failure in continuous power. Guardian™ can use external power directly from any regulated power source such as a battery or fuse panel. In addition, Guardian™ provides an onboard power regulator which enables connections to unregulated power sources such as solar panels or wind systems limited to a maximum of 36vDC. Guardian™ is capable of supporting simultaneous regulated and unregulated power connections to ensure continuous operations in mission critical environments.
If you are connecting the power to your fuse panel, use an “add a fuse” connector with 10A fuse and
connect to the fuse panel that provides between 6vDC and 36vDC power with the vehicle ignition either on or off. You may want to refer to your vehicle’s Operator or Maintenance Manual or you may have to use your volt meter to locate the appropriate fuse. See the figures below.
This assures that Guardian™ will stay fully-charged when your vehicle is at rest. When your vehicle is not running, Guardian™ remains in a very low power consumption mode and should not noticeably drain your battery. Depending upon your battery and vehicle types, our experience indicates that Guardian™ can operate up to 6 months or more without recharging your vehicles battery. Your results may differ depending upon your asset’s accessories, weather conditions, and battery condition. Note, since
Guardian™ requires only 7.5vDC of power which is well below a standard 12vDC vehicle battery charge. Therefore, Guardian™ can still be operational even though you may not be able to start your vehicle. As
an added precaution, Guardian™ can provide warning alerts when your asset’s battery charge drops to a

low level. We recommend that you do not connect to any power source without a fuse and that the maximum fuse amperage is 10Amps.
Add-a-Fuse
If connecting power directly to a battery, use an inline 10A fuse (not included). Refer to the diagram below:
Before you are ready to power-up your Guardian™ for the first time make sure: you check all connections; your vehicle is in a clear location; and your antenna is temporarily resting or mounted. Make sure you connect the black wire to the vehicle frame or other grounding connection. Guardian™ will automatically turn-on when you connect to a regulated or unregulated power source capable of producing between 7.5v and 36vDC.

Turning-On Guardian™
Before you power-on Guardian™ for the first time, make sure you check all electrical, battery and other connections and assure that the indicated antennae face side of Guardian™ is properly directed toward the open sky. When external power is connected, such as a battery connection, Guardian™ will automatically turn-on. If everything is properly connected AND the SIM card was installed and properly configured, Guardian™ will begin transmitting data in about 3 minutes from powering up. Guardian™ provides blue and green LEDs to signify the status of the GPS and GPRS (or cellular modem), respectively. See the table below.
Turning-Off Guardian™
In the event you need to turn-off power to Guardian™, please do the following in order: 1) disconnect the 16-pin wiring harness that is plugged into the back of the Guardian™ controller, and 2) gently insert the end of a paper clip into the upper left hole on the face plate of your Guardian where you will push a button and hold it down for 3 to 5 seconds until the green and blue lights shut off.
If at any time both the green and blue LED lights on the front face of Guardian™ are no longer visible, then the unit is powered down.
Web Portal Navigation Menu
The Guardian™ main menu in the web portal enables quick and easy navigation to specific features. The web portal works with any Guardian™ version and associated sensors. The web portal can only address features where Guardian™ has been equipped with the required Guardian™ hardware and is properly connected and configured. However, since the Guardian™ web portal is a cloud-based system, any options and features added in the future can be managed within the web portal. The web portal menu structure is as follows:

View your history of alert notifications to include date and time people were contacted, methods used, individual messages delivered, and triggering event.
Response Plans / Configuration
Manage individual plans that are used when a preselected event is triggered. Includes contacts, messages, and methods. You must have a Response Plan configured in order for you to receive notifications about specific events.
PEOPLE
Manage your friends, family, and associate contacts.
Contacts
Input the name, address, relationship, and contact information for your friends, family and associates. This information can be used in creating your Response Plans by listing those people that you want notified when a specific event occurs. You can also identify whether or not this contact can be used for automated notifications.
Groups
Create and manage groups of people such as clients, drivers, maintenance teams, employees, etc.
Activities
Guardian™ offers a simple Contact Relationship Manager (CRM) capability to identify activities and notes on individuals in your contact list.
VMRS

Description
Assets
Identifies the mobile assets for which you have data access
Last Location
Last reported GPS location (geo-coded to nearest physical street address)
Ignition Status
Icon indicates whether the Ignition is on (green icon) or off (red icon). Alerts can be enabled for change in ignition status.
Ignition HOS
Hours of Service based on Ignition status. Essentially, HOS operation is similar to an electronic Hobbs meter. If a powered assets, Ignition HOS can serve as a compliance record monitoring the driver’s operational time. Alerts can be enabled when daily, weekly, or monthly thresholds are exceeded.
Ignition HSLS
Ignition Hours Since Last Service is based upon the difference between the current HOS and the HOS at the time of the last maintenance service. Alerts can be enabled for reaching HSLS thresholds.
Lockout Status
If your asset is equipped with a maintenance lock-out device, the availability or
readiness status of your asset is displayed here as “Available” (green icon) or “Unavailable” (red icon). Unavailable indicates that the asset is still being
serviced and is not ready for operational use.
Lockout HOS
Indicates the total Hours of Service that the asset has been in maintenance or service. Alerts can be enabled for reaching Lockout HOS thresholds.
Lockout HSLS
Lockout Hours Since Last Service is based upon the difference between the current HOS and the HOS at the time of the last maintenance service. Alerts can be enabled for reaching Lockout HSLS thresholds.
Battery Voltage
For powered assets or assets with a battery-powered electrical system, the battery voltage can be monitored. Alerts can be enabled for reaching low and high battery voltage thresholds.
Equipment Mileage
Displays total mileage on the asset. You can input and adjust starting mileage at any time.
Speed
For powered or towed assets, the speed can be monitored. Alerts can be enabled for reaching low and high speed (velocity) thresholds.
Equipment Info
You can enter the Make, Model, Year, and Serial Number to assist you in quickly finding and sorting all your assets.
Operator
Enter the primary operator as either an individual or company name.
Mileage Since Last Service
This value is automatically displayed based on your last service date and mileage reading.
CSFD
Count Since Fielded Date is the number of occurrences a sensor changes to an active state from the time it was fielded.
CSLU
Count Since Last Update is the number of occurrences a sensor changes to an active state from the last time it was updated.

My Assets Active Alerts

Assets
Identifies the mobile assets (that have been outfitted with Guardian™)
Sensor
Alerts can be associated with data generated by any sensor. You can have multiple alerts per sensor.
Response Plan
Each alert is defined by a response plan which you create. Response plans can be applied to any one or more alerts on any number of sensors.
Maximum # of Alerts
You can set the maximum number of alert notifications (up to 5) that will be received by you or individuals or groups you assign.
Interval (min)
You specify the time interval between each alert notification sent for each alarm.
Edit
You can directly edit the active alert.
Active Alerts
Whether you have one asset or a large fleet, you can see a summary display of all active alerts. You may have several alerts configured for each Guardian™. However, you may have only a few or no alerts that are active. For each active alert you will see the following:
Hub / Mobile Assets Summary
From the Asset Summary screen (above), you can select an individual hub and click on it to access additional information. At this level the information presented is specific to the selected hub. Data presented includes Summary data of all communication strings, History, Configuration, Reports, and Command for all sensors active on the selected hub. The Summary data (below) provides a time­stamped list of all data strings communicated by the hub to the portal.

The History tab presents a tabular format of all commands or critical communications sent by the hub (up to the portal) or by a user (down to the hub) for any sensor associated with the hub over a selected date range. This information is useful if your hub reporting or design parameters were changed at any time.

The Configuration tab for the individual hub/asset lets you input information to help identify your asset. The MAN number and IMEI are provided by the factory and placed on Guardian™ before shipping. The default hub checkbox at the bottom of the page lets you identify which hub you want to use to replicate other configurations in the event you have multiple assets that are similarly configured.
The Reports tab provides a graphical and tabular presentation of the selected sensor or hub data. Select the period of performance you are interested in and click the filter button. You can also export the data in various formats by clicking on the save icon (disk image). Select the format you desire, then click the
icon.

Scheduled Report Generation
On the Reports page (under the Summary tab), is a Schedule button that allows you to configure automated report generation and email to one or more accounts. Open the Schedule Report dialog box, and select your desired options. In the HTML text editor, you can create rich-text reports complete with images and hyperlinks. Also, under the Message header is a list of dynamic parameters that you can include in the body of your email. Just highlight the parameter you wish and drag over to the HTML editor box.
The available dynamic parameters are:
##DateTime## - the date and time of the report ##Duration## - the period of the performance the report represents ##HubName## - the name of the hub / asset ##MaxAlerts## - the maximum number of alerts that may be set ##RangeValue## - the value of the sensor (e.g., Speed reached = 72MPH) ##SensorDescription## - the description of the sensor generating this report ##SensorPort## - the port number of the sensor (e.g., DIN1) ##UserName## - the logged in user name of the person generating the report
At the hub level, the Reports tab lets you select multiple sensors for graphically plotting and tabularizing the data against each other.

The Command tab requires authorized use and enables control commands to be sent down to the hub. Depending upon the license and hub configuration, commands are available for sending a pulse or steady-state signal through one of the Digital or Analog outputs or reconfiguring the hub parameters such as reporting interval and sensor sensitivity.
Sensor Level
At this level the information presented is for the selected sensors associated with a selected hub. The sensor parameters include Summary, Alerts, Configuration, and Reports. These tabs are similar to those found at the hub level. Summary provides all data strings communicated for the specific sensor under examination. The Alerts tab itemizes all active alerts which can be set for the incoming sensor parameters. For example, if the sensor is measuring vehicle speed, then alerts can be set for a high threshold such at 70MPH, and if exceeded, would trigger an alert response plan (see Section Alerts).
The Configuration tab (below) presents design and configuration parameters specific to the selected sensor.

The Reports tab provides options to present the accumulated sensor data in graphical and tabular formats. GPS and Geospatial Information System Data
Unique to sensors is GPS data which includes latitude, longitude, speed, altitude and heading information. GPS information is presented similar to other sensors, in that there are Summary, Alerts, Configuration and Reports tabs. The GPS Reports tab presents the GPS data on Google Maps as illustrated below. Note, all Google Map API parameters are available for display and use.

The Alerts tab (below) differs from the other sensor alerts in that it uses ingress and egress of preset geofence parameters as thresholds.
To create and manage geofencing parameters, click on the geofence button found under the Reports tab. While a geofence requires a minimum of 3 geographic points, Guardian™ enables you to create any shape such as following roads, borders, neighborhoods, fuel stations, restaurants, and even parking lots, to name just a few possibilities. To create a geofence, simple place your mouse cursor on a location on the Google map and click. Move to the next location and click again. The last mouse click must close the polygon you are creating (failure to do so will result in Guardian™ automatically closing the polygon which may not be what you wanted). Below is a simple 4-sided geofence.

Dispatch
Guardian™ has a comprehensive, powerful resource management platform designed for fleet logistics to assist in productivity gains and reductions in total cost of operations/ownership. The Dispatch feature enables Fleet Managers (such as Heads of Households) to quickly locate their assets in a given location or across the globe. Dispatch also enables fleet dispatchers to assist drivers with directions and identification of Points of Interest such as fuel stops and restaurants. Referring to the image below, the Dispatch feature lets authorized users see a snapshot of where all vehicles (assets) are located.
In the image below, the map marker identifies a specific mobile asset location.

PEOPLE
Contacts
Guardian’s™ Contact Management feature is a comprehensive knowledge management system for storing and retrieving critical data and information on individuals, groups, businesses, vendors, partners and clients. Contact Management serves as an electronic address book, contact management system, customer relationship manager, and personal directory. Contact Management also provides security for supporting Human Resource personnel data. Users can utilize rapid entry, search and sort features to quickly create or locate information pertaining to any individual, groups, or entities.
The Contact List default page displays a list of individuals, groups and entities in alphabetical order by last name. Associated information such as affiliated organization, mailing address, telephone, fax and cell numbers, email address, website address, and status accompany each listing within the Contact List. In addition, tabs linking to other informational pages enable the capture of detailed information, notes, activities, alternate contacts, and group associations. Features are also provided to permit custom designed fields for capturing unique or desired information.

History
The Alerts main menu has submenus for History and Response Plans. History allows you to view all alerts that were generated, who was contacted, what contact method was used, what Response Plan was used, and the message sent.
Response Plans
Users create individual Response Plans that can be used in one or more alerts. Response Plans are associated with sensor, hub, or other data that can trigger an alert. Dynamic parameters and the HTML Editor enable configuration of robust and informative Response Plans.

When configuring a Response Plan that is associated with an Alert, you can include dynamic parameters in the body of your email or text message alert. Just highlight the parameter and drag into position in your text. The following dynamic parameters are available:
