Introduction
For details about RADIUS, TFTP, Serial communications program (such as
HyperTerminal), and Telnet applicat ions or web browser, please refer to their
respective documentation. The AP-2000 User’s Guide contains information
for ScanTool, an application provided with AP-2000. ScanTool helps locate
AP-2000 units on a subnet.
The most common initialization and installation problems relate to IP
Addressing. F or example, you must have valid IP Addresses for both the
AP-2000 and the TFTP server before you can transfer files over Ethernet.
The follow ing list identifies important troubleshooting concepts and topics.
Q Refer to the User G u ides and Manual s
Q IP Ad dress management is fundamental. Refer to the “Documenting
Your Configuration” section in the AP-2000 User’s Guide.
Q Factory default units are set for “Dynamic” (DHCP) IP Address
assignment. The default IP Address for the AP-2000 is 10.0.0. 1. If you
connect the AP-2000 unit to a network with an active DHCP server, then
use Sc anTool to locate the IP A ddress of your unit. If a DHCP server is
notactiveonyoursubnet,thentheScanToolcanbeusedtoconfigure
your AP-2000.
Q The Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) provides a means to
download and upload files. These files include the AP-2000 Image
(executable program) and configuration files.
Q If th e AP-2000 password is los t or forgotten, you will need to reset
to default values. The Reset to Factory Default procedure resets your
configuration, but does not change the current AP Image.
4
Page 5
Introduction
Q If all else fails… The Reset to Factory Default procedure erases the
current AP-2000 Image and sets t he unit to factory default values. Then
you can download a new image and configure the unit .
Q AP-2000 Supports a Command Line Interface (CLI). If you are having
trouble loc ating your AP-2000 on the netw ork, connect to the unit direc tly
using the serial interface.

AccessPointwillnotboot
TheAccess Point unit showsno activity (LEDs, includingpowerLED, are not
illuminated). Check the following:
1.Make sure the AP-2000 pow er supply is operating and connected to the
unit correctly.
2.Make sure all cables are connected to the correct ports on the AP-2000.
3.Check your power source.
4.If you are using an Active Ethernet hub, verify that there is a valid p ower
source applied to the AP-2000.
Serial link does not work
If the Access Point cannot be reached using the serial port interface, check
the following:
1.Make sure you are using the proper serial port cable adapter. The
adapter provided with your kit converts a standard serial port DB-9
connector to the AP-2000 Mini-DIN connector.
2.Check the cable connection between the Access Point and the client
station.
3.Double-check the physical network connections.
7

4.Make sure your PC terminal program (such as HyperTerminal) is active
and configured to the following values:
—Com Port: (COM1, etc. depending on your computer)
—Baud rate: 9600
—Data bits: 8
—Stop bits: 1
—Flow Control: None
—Parity: None
—Line Feeds with Carriage Returns
5.If the HyperTerminal session is only receiving data, set the “line feeds
with carriage return” option as described below:
The HyperTe rminal session will now allow you to transmit and receive
data to and from the AP-2000.
6.Make sure the Access Point and the client station both have the same
serial port configuration.

AP-2000 Connectivity Issues
Ethernet link does not work
If you cannot access the HTT P (web browser) Interface or the Internet from
the Access Point, perform the following checks:
1.“Ping” the Acc ess Point. If you cannot ping the Access Point, make sure
you have the correct IP Address for the unit you are working with. If the
AP-2000 responds to the ping, then the Ethernet Interface is working
properly; continue with this procedure.
2.Make sure you are using one of the following web browsers: Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.0 or better, or Netscape 6.0 or better.
3.Make sure t he “Proxy Server” on your web br owser is not enabled.
4.Make sure you have not exceeded the maximum number of web, Telnet/
CLI, or serial CLI sessions allowed.
5.Double-check the p hysical network c o nnections. Use a known-good unit
to ensure the network connection is present.
6.Perform network infrastructure troubleshooting (check s witches,
routers, etc).

Basic Setup and Configuration Problems
Lost AP-2000, Telnet, or SNMP password
1.Perform the Reset To FactoryDefault proceduredescribedin this guide.
This procedure resets system and network parameters, but does not
affect the AP-2000 Image. The default AP-2000 password is “public”,
and the default Telnet pass word is also “public”.
2.Document your password(s) in the form provided in the “Documenting
your Configuration” section in the AP-2000 User’s Guide.
Client cannot connect
The client station cannot associate with the Access Point. C heck the
following:
1.Confirm the Network Name of the Access Point usi ng the HTTP (web)
Interface or the CLI.
2.Make sure the active Network Name on the client machine matches the
AP-200 0 Network Name. Each PC Card should have a unique Network
Name.
3.The Client Manager software allows you to s tore Network Names in
configuration profiles. Make sure you are using the correct profile for
your location.
Network Names are usually allocated and maintained by your network
administrator.

Basic Setup a nd Configuration Problems
Access Point i s slow to respond
If the Access Point takes a long time to become available, check the
following items:
1.Make sure the DHCP server is set up to allocate IP Addresses
dynamically. In the Access Point, the def ault IP Address Assignment
mode is dynamic (DHCP).
a.To find the current IP Address using DHCP, check the IP Client
TableintheDHCPServer.MatchtheAP-2000MACAddressinthe
table to the one on your unit.
b.If you do not have a DHCP serve r on your network, the default static
IP Address is 10.0.0.1.
2.Or use ScanTool to lo cate the current AP-2000 IP Address. On ce
you have the curren t IP Address, use the HTTP or CLI Interface to either
set the unit to DHCP mode or assign a static IP Address.
3.If you use static IP Address assignments, and cannot access the unit
over Ethernet , use the “Setting IP Address using serial port and normal
CLI” procedure in this guide.
a.Verify that the static IP Address assigned to the Access Point is not
a duplicate within the network. Power down the AP-2000 and ping
the IP Address.
b.If the ping is successful, there is a duplicate IP Address on your
network.
4.Perform the Reset To Fac tory Default procedure in this guide. This will
reset the unit to DHCP mode. If there is a DHCP Server on the same
subnet, the DHCP Se rver will assign an IP Address to the AP-2000.
11
Page 12
5.Verify that there is only one DHCP Server active on t he network at one
time. The AP -2000 has DHCP service capability. This could conflict with
a n etwork DHCP server.
6.Verify the level of traffic on the network.
7.Reboot the Access Point.
HTTP (browser) or Telnet Interface does not work
If your client station cannot reach the HTTP or Telnet I nterface, then:
1.Use the CLI over the serial port to check the SNMP Table, which can be
restricting access to Telnet and HTTP. For more information refer to the
AP-2000 CLI Reference Manual.
2.“Ping” the Access Point. If you cannot ping the Access Point, make sure
you have the correct IP Address for the unit you are working with.
3.Make sure you have not exceeded the maximum number of web, Telnet/
CLI, or serial CLI sessions allowed.
4.Make sure you are using one of the following web browsers: Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.0 or better, or Netscape 6. 0 or bet ter.
5.Make sure the “Proxy Server” on your web browser is not enabled.
Page 13

TelnetCLIdoesnotwork
1.Make sure you have the proper IP Addr ess. In the Telnet connecti on
dialog, ent er the IP Address of the Access Point you want to connect to.
From a DOS prompt, type:
C:\> telnet <IP Address>
2.Use the CLI over the serial port to check the SNMP Table, w hich can be
restricting access to Telnet and HTTP. For more information refer to the
AP-2000 CL I Reference Ma nual.
3.Make sure you have not exceeded the maximum number of web, Telnet/
CLI, or serial CLI sessions allowed.
TFTP Server does not work
1.Make sure the T FTP Server has been started.
2.Verify the IP Address of the TFTP Server. The server may be local or
remote, so long as it has a valid IP Address.
3.Configure the TFTP Server to “point” to the folder containing the file to be
downloaded (or to the fold er in which the file is to be uploaded).
4.Verify that you have the proper AP-2000 Image file name and directory
path.

Reset and Re load Procedures
Reset and Reload Procedures
IP Address management is fundamental. We suggest you create a chart to
document and validate the IP addresses for your system.
If the password is lost or forgotten, you will need to reset the AP-2000 to
default values. The Reset to Factory Default procedure resets
configuration settings, but does not change the current AP Image. The
Forced Reload procedure erases the current AP Image if you need to
download a new image.
It is useful to set up the serial port and use your terminal emulator to monitor
AP-2000 activity. Serial port setup is described in “Troubleshoot ing”.
Reset to Factory Default procedure
Use this procedure to reset the network configuration values, including the
AP-2000 IP Address, Subnet Mask, and so on. The curre nt AP Image is not
deleted. This procedure may required if the AP-2000 password is forgotten.
1.Press and hold the RELOAD button for about 10 seconds. Result: The
AP-2000 reboots, and the factory default network values are restored.
2.If not using DHCP, u se the ScanTool or normal CLI t o set the AP-2000 IP
Address, Subnet Mask, and so on. Please refer to the “Command Line
Interface Reference Man ual” for CLI information.
18
Page 19
Reset and Reload Procedures
Forced Reload procedure
Use this procedure to force the AP-2000 back to default network
configuratio n values and d ownload a new AP Image. This pr ocedure may be
required when the password is forgotten or the current AP Image is missing
or corrupted.
In this procedure, use the Bootloader CLI over the serial port to set the IP
Address and download a new AP Image.
1.While the AP Image is running, press the RESET butt on. Result: The
AP-2000 reboots and the indicators begin to flash.
NOTE:
By compl eting Step 2, the firmware in the Agere AP-2000 will be
erased. A serial cable will be required to reload firmware.
2.Press and hold the REL OAD button for about 20 seconds until t he
POWER LED turns amber. Result: The AP-2000 deletes the current AP
Image and Configuration files. The Bootloader CLI becomes active. The
following procedure describes how to use the Bootloader CLI to assign
an IP Address and download a new AP Image.
19
Page 20
Reset and Re load Procedures
Initializing the AP-2000 using the Bootloader CLI
In some cases, specifically when a bad AP Image prevents successful
booting, you may need to use the Bootloader CLI to download a new
executable AP Image. If you need to force the AP-2000 to factory default
state, use the “Forced Reload Procedure” above.
To download the AP Image, you will need an Ethernet connection t o the
computer on which the TFTP server resides. This can be any computer on
the LAN, or connected to the AP-2000 with a “crossover” Ethernet cable.
You must also connect the AP-2000 to a computer with a standard serial
cable and use a terminal client, such as HyperTerminal. From the terminal,
enter CLI Commands to set the IP Address and download an AP Image.
Preparing to download the AP Image
Before starting, you need to know the AP-2000 IP Address, Subnet Mask,
the TFTP Server IP Address, and the AP Image file name. Ensure the TFTP
sever is running and configured to point to the folder containing the image to
be downloaded.
Download procedure
1.Connect the computer serial cable to the AP-2000 serial port.
2.Start TFTP Server, and ensure the new AP Image file is in the TFTP
directory. In this procedure, TFTP downloads an AP Image to the
AP-2000.
20
Page 21

RADIUS Authentication s erver
If the RADIUS authentication server is selected for authentication during
configuration, ensure RADIUS is configured and running. Otherwise, clients
will not be able to log in. There are several reasons the authentication server
services might be unavailable, here are two typical things to check.
Q Ensure you have the proper RADIUS authentication server information
setup configured in the AP-2000. Check the RADIUS server IP Address
authentication Port number (default is 1812), and Shared Secret.
Q E nsure the RADIUS authentication ser ver RAS setup matches the
AP-2000.
TFTP server
The “TrivialFile Transfer Protocol” server allows youto transfer files acrossa
network. You can upload files from the AP-2000 for backup or copying, and
you can download the files for configuration and AP Image upgrades. The
TFTP software is located on the Agere AP-2000 CD-ROM.
30
Page 31
Related applications
If a TFTP server is not configured and running, you will not be able to
download and upload images and configuration files to/from the AP-2000.
Remember that the TFTP server does not h ave to be lo cal, so lon g as you
have a valid TFTP IP Address. TFTP does not have to be running for
AP-2000 operations that do not transfer files.
After the TFTP se rver is installed:
Q Check to see that TFTP is configured to poin t to the directory containing
the AP Image.
Q Ensure you hav e the proper TFTP server IP Address, the proper
AP Image file name, and that the TFTP server is connected.
Q Ensure the TFTP server is configured to both send and receive, with no
timeout.
