Introduction
Hingelock deployer Model 358 was developed for the International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE-3) satellite. Two such mechanisms, located 180° apart, were used to form a dipole antenna along the Z-axis as part of the 3-axis Radio Mapping Experiment. This motorized mechanism is capable of extending and retracting a 1.12 inch (2.86 cm) diameter by 32.8 foot (10 meters) long Tubular Extendible Element (TEE).
The deployer features electrical and mechanical stops at full-extension and –retraction. A potentiometer, driven by the moving element, provides a continuous indica­tion of deployed length. This deployment mechanism is designed to meet the requirements of document MIL-A-083577B (USAF) General Specification for Moving Mechanical Assemblies for Space and Launch Vehicles. This unit can deploy and retract in orbit.
