You need two AA batteries to power the SCP-92. For the best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-552. Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. Push the battery compar tment cov er in the di rection of the arrow marked on the cover and lift it up.

Cautions:
• Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
• Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
3. Close the cover.
If the sound gets distorted or weak, replace the batteries.
Cautions:
• If you do not plan to use the SCP-92 for a week or more, remove the batteri es. Batteries can leak chemicals that corrode or damage electronic circuits.
• Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly.

To protect your hearin g, foll ow these gui delin es when you use headphones.
7
Page 8
14-123 5.fm Page 8 Friday, July 2, 1999 11:13 AM
• Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the v olum e to a comf o rtabl e l e vel.
• Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.
• Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume le vel that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing.
Traffic Safety
Do not wear headphones whil e operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and can be illegal in some areas.
Even though some headphones let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still can present a traffic hazard .

TAPE TIPS
Tape Quality
For the best performance, use only regular length (60- or 90-minute) cassette tapes. We do not recommend long-playing cassette tapes, such as C-120s, because they are extremely thin and can easily tangle in the playback mechanism.
Restoring Tape Tension and Sound Quality
After y ou pl ay a ca s s ette tap e se v e ra l times, the t a pe might become tightly wound on the reels. This can cause playback sound quality to deteriorate.
To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side, then turn the tape over and fast-forward to the end again. Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each side of the cassette’s outer shell on a flat surface.

Caution: Be careful not to damage the cassette when tapping it. Do not to uch the exposed tape or allow any sharp objects near the cassette.
Cleaning the Tape-Handling Parts
Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape’s coating can accumulate on the tape head and other parts t hat the tape touches. This can reduce the SCP-92’s performance.
Follow these steps to clean the tape-handling parts after about every 20 hours of tape player operation.
1. Remove the batterie s.
2. Open the cassette compartment door.
3. Press
to expose the tape-hand li ng parts.
