PREPARATION
INSTA LLING BATTERIES
Your SCP-85 is powered by two AA batteries (not supplied). We recommend alkaline batteries (such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-557). You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-
125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you al so need a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133).
Cautions:
• Do not mix old and new batteries, di fferent types of
batteries (standard, alkaline, o r nickel-cadmium), or rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
• Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. Push open the cassette compartment’s cover, then push open the cassette compartment’s door.
4
Page 5
14-122 6.fm Page 5 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:10 AM
2. Press the battery compartment cover’s tab in the direction of the arrow. The cover pops open.
3. Install the batteries as indicat ed by the polarity symbols (+ and –) marked inside cover.
4. Close the battery compartment cover and the cassette compartment’s door and cover.
If the sound gets distorted or we ak, be sure the SCP -85 is turned off and replace the batteries.
Notes:
• To remove the batteries, push the exposed battery in the indicated location.
5
Page 6
14-122 6.fm Page 6 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:10 AM
• To keep the preset stations stored in memory, turn the radio off before removing batteries and replace the batteries within 45 seconds.
Cautions:
• Never leave dead or weak batteries in the SCP-85.
• If you do not pla n to use the S CP-85 for a m onth or more, remove the batteries.
• Dispose of batteries properly; do not bury or burn them.
Important:
Your SCP-85 is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries’ useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in y ou r area. S om e opt ions that m ig ht be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers such as your l ocal RadioShack store, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs.
USING HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS
To listen to the SCP-85, you need a pai r of headphones or amplified speakers with a
6
1
/8-inch plug.
Page 7
14-122 6.fm Page 7 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:10 AM
Remove the rubber plug from the SCP-85’s
PHONES
jack and insert the headphones’ or speakers’ 1/8-inch plug into the
PHONES
jack. Replace the plug when you
remove the headphones or speakers from the SCP-85.
Listening Safely
To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones.
• Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level.
• Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.
• Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to t he volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discom fort might still damage your hearing.

Page 8

Traffic Safety
Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and can be illegal in some areas.
Even though some headphones let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal vol ume levels, they still can present a traffic hazard.
USING THE BELT CLIP
For hands-free carrying, slide the belt clip over your belt.
To remove the belt clip, turn the screw’s lock holding the belt clip counterclockwise.

TAPE TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
CLEANING THE TAPE-HANDLING PARTS
Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape’s c oating can accumulate on the tape heads and other parts that the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the performance of the SCP-85. Use the following cleaning procedure after every 20 hours of operation.
1. Open the cassette compartment cover and door.
2. Open the battery compartment cover.
3. Remove the batteries.
4. Press
5. Use a cotton swab dipped in denatured alcohol or tape head cleani ng solution to clean the play head, pinch roller, tape guides, and capstans.

RESTORING TAPE TENSION AND SOUND QUALITY
After you play a cassette several times, the tape m ight become tightly wound on t he reels. This c an cause pla yback sound quality to deteriorate.
To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side, then completely rewind it. Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each side of the cassette’s outer shell on a flat surface.
Caution:
tapping it. Do not touch the exposed tape or allow any sharp objects near the cassette.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Your Optimus SCP-85 Sports AM•FM Stereo Cassette Player with Auto Reverse and Digital Tuning is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for the SCP-85 so you can enjoy it for years.
Keep the SCP-85 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids might contain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the SCP-85 only in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can sho rten the life o f electronic devices and distort or melt plastic parts.
Keep the SCP-85 away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts.
Handle the SCP-85 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage circuit boards and cases and can cause the S CP-85 to work improperly.
Wipe the SCP-85 with a damp c loth occasionally to keep it look ing new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean it.
21

THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW
Your cassette player might cause TV or radio interference even when it is operating properly. To determine whether your cassette player is causing the interference, turn off your cassette player. If the interference goes away, your cassette player is causing it. Try t o eliminate the interference by:
• Moving your cassette player away from the receiver
• Contacting your local RadioShack store for help
If you cannot eliminate the interference, the FCC requires that you stop using your cassette player.
