Chapter 1 Overview
The X204 series cards are versatile devices used for connecting your phone network to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) world. This is accomplished through analog connected to the FXO (Foreign Exchange Office) port, phone handset connected to the FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) ports, digital lines connected to the BRI (Basic rate ISDN) ports, and E1(Basic Rate ISDN PRI) ports. The X204 series cards allow Asterisk to connect to your phone network, creating an office type telephony environment.

What is Asterisk
The Definition of Asterisk is described as follows: Asterisk is a complete PBX in software. It runs on Linux, BSD, Windows (emulated) and provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX and more. Asterisk does voice over IP in four protocols, and can interoperate with almost all standard-based telephony equipments using relatively cost-effective hardware. Asterisk provides Voicemail services with Directory, Call Conferencing, Interactive Voice Response, and Call Queuing. It supports three-way calling, caller ID services, ADSI, IAX, SIP, H323 (as both client and gateway), MGCP (call manager only) and SCCP/Skinny (voip-info.org).

OpenVox Communication Co. LTD. URL: www.openvox.cn
Asterisk as a Phone Switch (PBX)
Asterisk can be configured as the core of an IP or hybrid PBX, switching calls, managing routes, enabling features, and connecting callers with the outside world over IP, analog (POST), and digital (T1/E1/J1/BRI) connections. Asterisk runs on a wide variety of operating systems including Linux, Mac OS X, OpenBSD, and Sun Solaris. It provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX including many advanced features that are often associated with high end (and high cost) proprietary PBXs.
Asterisk’s architecture is designed for maximum flexibility and supports
Voice over IP in many protocols, and can interoperate with almost all standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware.
Asterisk as a Gateway
It can also be built out as the heart of a media gateway, bridging the
legacy PSTN to the expanding world of IP telephony. Asterisk’s modular
architecture allows it to convert between a wide range of communications protocols and media codecs.
What is X204 Series Hybrid telephony card?
OpenVox X204 hybrid telephony card is a PCI 2.2 compliant card which

supports 3 types interface: FXO/FXS, BRI and T1/E1/ J1. X204 Series card allows users to choose the number of FXO/FXS module according to individual needs. With no additional separate channel combiner and gateway access to products, each interface access 2 analog line via junction box. BRI ports can be configured for TE or NT mode individually by jumpers. It can provide 4 simultaneous voice calls over 2 ISDN BRI lines, turns your legacy ISDN BRI equipment into powerful Voice over IP devices and provides a soft migration path from ISDN technology to the new Voice over IP world. T1/E1/ J1 interface is selectable on a per-card or per-port basis, and supports industry standard telephony and data protocols, including Primary Rate ISDN (both American and Standard Euro) protocol families for voice, PPP, Cisco, HDLC, and Frame Relay data modes. Both line-side and trunk-side interfaces are supported. X204 Series Card works perfectly with open source Asterisk® and enables users to take full advantages of the high performance and rich features of Asterisk®.

If X204 is not recognized by the system, you have to power off and take out the card to insert it into another PCI slot. Software installation Some dependencies are crucial. If any of them is absent, the software installation process would not go through successfully. Let’s run "yum install XX" (XX stands for the dependencys name) to check the availability of dependencies.
# yum install bison
# yum install bison-devel
# yum install ncurses
# yum install ncurses-devel
# yum install zlib
# yum install zlib-devel
# yum install openssl
# yum install openssl-devel
# yum install gnutls-devel
# yum install gcc
# yum install gcc-c++
# yum install libxml2
# yum install libxml2-devel
# yum install libxml2-devel

20
OpenVox Communication Co. LTD. URL: www.openvox.cn
If there is no kernel-devel source in the system, users should run the following command to install the kerneldevel to peer current kernel:
# yum install kernel-devel-`uname r` While if there is no matched kernel-devel found, you should download matched RPM package to install it, or execute the following command to update to the latest and stable kernel version:
# yum install kernel kernel-devel
After installed, please reboot your machine to apply the new kernel and install the dependencies. If the dependency has been installed, system indicates that nothing to do which means you could go to next one directly. Otherwise, the system will keep on installing it.
Change to the directory dahdi-linux-complete-XX (XX represents DAHDI version), then perform commands one by one to install DAHDI.
# cd /usr/src/dahdi-linux-complete-2.11.1+2.11.1

22
OpenVox Communication Co. LTD. URL: www.openvox.cn
"make samples" will install the standard sample configuration file in the directory /etc/asterisk. As a freshman, you should perform "make samples", that is
to say, it is unnecessary to perform "make samples" every time. Because once performed, it will cover the old sample configuration files you have installed.
Driver Configuration
1. Driver loading
After compiling and installing DAHDI and Asterisk, please load the driver by running:
# modprobe dahdi #modprobe x200 # modprobe d100m #modprobe b200m #modprobe fxs200m #modprobe fxo200m # dahdi_genconf
If there is any error, please trace the cause. Until all errors are clear up,you could execute "dahdi_genconf" again, and then go to the next step.By running "dahdi_genconf", it will generate /etc/dahdi/system.conf

Chapter 5 FXO, FXS, BRI and E1 Explained
Identification There are multiple configurations in which an X204 series card may be

purchased. Each configuration consists of a number of FXS, FXO, BRI and/or E1 modules. These modules are identified by their color.
FXS-Foreign Exchange Station (Green Modules) FXO-Foreign Exchange Office (Red Modules) BRI- Basic Rate ISDN (Green Modules) E1-Basic Rate ISDN PRI(Green Modules
This chapter provides a review of the four module types and their uses within your Asterisk server. Note: Only qualified service personnel should be install the card. User should not attempt to perform this function themselves. FXS Module The FXS module allows an X204 series card to initiate and send ringing voltage to an FXO device such as an analog telephone. Because of the module design, you can activate additional ports at any time with more FXS daughter cards.
FXO Module The FXO module allows an X204 series card to determinate analog telephone line (POTS). The FXO module passes all the call features any standard analog telephone line will support. The phone receiving the call is the last FXO device in the chain. When it receives voltage from an FXS device, the phone rings. Because of the modular design, you can

activate additional ports at any time with more FXO daughter cards. BRI Module You are able to set a port to NT or TE mode, please refer to figure 3 for visualized information. If a port works on NT mode, you should set jumper to CONNECT
(ON).
If a port works on TE mode, theoretically it should be set to OPEN
(OFF), but it might connect to some non-standard ISDN terminal equipments that do not have terminal resistors, for such equipments,
you should set it to CONNECT(ON). These jumpers control whether supply power to the external ISDN terminals. You should adjust accordingly as follows: If the port works on TE mode, you MUST set the jumper to
OPEN(OFF) There are two aspects when ports work on NT mode. If the ISDN
terminal has the function of power supply, you should set the jumper
to OPEN (OFF); If ISDN terminal isnt self- powered, you should set
the jumper to CONNECT (ON).
