Digital Tape Drive
Your new OnStream Digital Tape Drive is not difficult to install. Just follow the
instructions in this section.
Setting the SCSI ID Jumper

SCSI ID number. The SCSI co ntroller typicall y uses SCSI ID 7, wh ile the other
SCSI devices use any of the remain ing IDs. Your OnStream Di gital Tape Drive
can use SCSI IDs 0 through 7. The last device on the SCSI chain also requires
termination.
Your OnStream Digital Tape Drive is set at the factory to SCSI ID 4 with the
termination jumper on. This SCSI ID is commonly used for tape devices and
should w ork in most installation s. If the facto ry settings are appropri ate for your
installation, ski p th is sec ti on.
If another de vice on you r compute r’s SCSI Chain is already us ing ID 4, you mus t
select an unused SCSI I D f or your OnStr eam D igital Tape Drive. If your
OnStrea m Digita l Tape Dri ve is not t he last device on t he SCSI ch ain, rem ove the

To select a different SCSI ID, follow these steps:

Tape Rotation Makes Sense
When defining the best tape ro tation strategy for your needs, the key thing to
conside r is how often your dat a change s. The follow ing are some expl anat ions of
typical tape rotati o n st rategies.
6-Tape Rotation
For data t hat changes mo re frequently, you may wa nt to use a 6-tape rotation
strategy. The simplest way to manage a 6-tape strategy is to use five tapes
Monday thr oug h Frida y an d la bel the si xt h tape “Off - Sit e”. Th en, every Mo nday
make a total backup onto the Monday tape. The rest of the week you make
incremental backups to the c orresponding tape. A t the end of the w eek, make
another total backup using the Off-Site tape. And of course, remember to store
the Off- Site tape in a secure location when you are not using it for backup.
10-Tape Rotation
The 10-tape rotation strategy works best if you need to keep track of weeks or
months of data. It is basically an extension of the 6-tape rotation strategy except
that you labe l the 6t h tape “Of f-Site Week 1”, the 7th tape “Off-Sit e Week 2”, th e
8th tape “O ff-Site We ek 3” and the 9th tape “Off-Site Week 4.” La bel the 10th
tape “Off -Site Monthly” and you are set. By usi ng a different off-sit e tape each
week, and yet another at the end of the month, yo u can build a co mp lete his tory
of data, just in case you need it.
Adding additional mo nthly tapes, one for each quarter of the year or for each
month, further enhances the data security of your tape rotation schedule.

Page 19
Archiving — Beyond Backup
In addition to backup, you will also want to consider implementing a solid
archiv ing strategy. That way you can clean up your hard drives and still have
access to all of your old data, just in case you need it. And a good archiving
strategy h el ps you g et mor e out of yo ur ha rd dr ives a nd ca n eve n d el ay that c os tly
