Onq IS-0166 Installation Instruction Sheet

1. Introduction
OnQ offers both In-Ceiling (364518-01) and In-Wall (364519-01) 6.5” (woofer size) speakers. They can be used for general music distribution and/or home theater applications. Both models are 2-way speakers and have adjustable tweeters to help direct high frequencies to specific locations if needed. Speakers come with several types of templates and paint rings.
2. Description
OnQ In-Ceiling and In-Wall speakers are made of tough semi-flexible plastic and feature perforated metal grills. Speakers are paintable and come with painting shields to protect the drivers from paint and damage. The speakers feature flip out tabs for installation and both speakers have swiveling tweeters. The In-Wall speakers have a 3 position switch to adjust the tweeter output level; this can come in handy for matching the speaker to its environment or tailoring to specific tastes.
3. Installation
NOTE: It is recommended that 16 gauge 2 conductor wire be run for most applications
from the amplifier or volume control to the speaker at a minimum. Different gauges can, and should, be used based upon the distance of the intended run or quality of installation (see Gauge Selection Chart). It is recommended that wire gauge not be less than 18 gauge.
NOTE: The OnQ Impedance Matching Volume Controls (P/N 364520-01 & -03), A-BUS
Amplified Volume Controls (P/N 364471-01, -02 & -03; w/IR 364472-01, -02 & -03) and 6 Room Audio Distribution Module (P/N 364454-01) all accommodate wire gauges from 18 to 14.
A. Run x/2 conductor (x=gauge preference) stranded speaker wire from the
distribution/volume control to the speaker location (pre-wiring).
B. Leave 2 to 4 feet of wire at the speakers intended location. Use a strip of
card board stapled to the joints/studs with a hole through it as a wire place holder for the drywall installers (see Figure 1).
C. After drywall and/or painting is complete, push wire through hole, center
template over hole, mark with a pencil and cut out with a dry-wall knife.

D. Strip off 3 inches or so of the speaker cable jacket to expose the
positive and negative insulated wires. Strip 3/8 to 1/2 inch of insulation off of these conductors.
E. Hold the speaker with one hand, push in the speaker terminal
connectors and insert wires; remove speaker grill (for in-ceiling leave the tweeter grill on). Be sure to have the positive wire in the RED terminal and the negative in the BLACK.
NOTE: Wiring both speakers identically as the above instruction states will
yield speakers that are “in phase”. If one speaker is wired opposite of the other, the speakers will be “out of phase” with one another. When speakers are “out of phase” they loose most of their bass response and have a “canned” type sound. Make sure every installed pair of speakers are correctly phased.
F. Use one hand to push the speaker into the cut out and the other to
turn the screws that engage the installation tabs. Tighten the tabs in a cross or X-pattern until “snug”. Be careful not to over tighten the tabs or damage could result (see Figure 2).
NOTE: If using a cordless drill/screwdriver, it is suggested that the screws be turned
until almost tight, then finish tightening via a screwdriver.
G. After the speaker has been installed, the tweeter can be positioned if desired
(see Figure 3).
H. If installing the In-Wall speaker, the tweeter level can be adjusted by rotating
the three position selection switch (see Figure 4).
