Note: The basic layout for the paddle holder is shown below. The ideal location for your paddle holder is
determined by the width of your kayak, your paddling position, and your height and arm length. It is very important to sit in your boat first to locate the pad eyes and hooks where they will not be contacted by your hands while paddling.
Step 1. Mark pad eye locations
Locate the rear pad eye and hook approximately even with your hip when you are sitting in the kayak. Mark locations.
Locate the front pad eye and hook 24” to 26” in front of the rear pad eye and hook. Mark locations.

Step 2. Paddling Test
Tape the pad eyes and hooks in place temporarily with the masking tape, and get in the kayak on the ground with your paddle.
Check that the front pad eye and hook is beyond the sweep of your hand as you paddle. Check that the rear pad eye is far enough inboard to avoid hand contact. Check that the paddle will lie on the deck and not interfere with any other parts of the kayak or rigging.
Adjust locations as necessary and recheck.
Step 3. Attach pad eyes and hooks
Drill 3/16-inch holes at the four marked spots. Place rivet through each pad eye and hook and into the drilled holes.
Align the pad eye as desired (recommended parallel to edge of deck) and drill the second hole using the pad eye as a template. Place rivet through each pad eye and hole.
Reach under deck and hold washer on one rivet and against the underside of deck. Set rivet with rivet gun. Repeat for each rivet.
Step 4. Rigging the shock cord
Knot one end of shock cord. Thread through the pad eyes so that the knots are on the opposite side from the hooks. Loosely tie the second knot so that the cord is slightly taut between the two pad eyes.
Check and adjust the shock cord tension by putting your paddle in place between pad eyes and hooks and stretching the cord up over the paddle shaft and onto the hooks. Cord should hold paddle firmly in place but it should not require excessive effort to hook and unhook. Adjust the knot location, if needed.
Tighten second knot and cut off any excess shock cord. The ends may be melted to
prevent fraying.
