SUGGESTED SITE PREPARATION:
Grade and Prepare the Building Site
The greenhouse should be set up so the length of the house runs north and south. This allows for the most sunlight to reach the plants.
Remove the grass and debris down to solid soil.
Locate building corners and set grading stakes 3 feet beyond building
corners.
Layout and Square the Foundation
It is very important to lay out your greenhouse with all four corners square with each other. You can do this by using the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the squareness of the plot. If you take the greenhouse length squared and add it to the greenhouse width squared, then find the square root of the total, it will give you the distance of your greenhouse from corner to corner.
Example:
A² + B² = √C
( 30’x30’) + ( 40’ x 40’ ) = 2500
2500 = 50
7
For a 30’ x 40’ greenhouse, the width squared would be 900’ (30’ x 30”) and the length squared would be 1600’ (40’ x 40’). The total of these two measurements is 2500’. The square root of 2500’ is 50’ (50’ x 50’ = 2500’). Therefore, your diagonal measurement would be 50’ for a greenhouse of this size. See attached chart for sample measurements.

When you are finished outlining your greenhouse foundation, the diagonal measurement from corner to corner should be the same in both directions.
Set batter boards approximately 3 feet (or adequate distance for auger clearance) back from corners in each direction (fig 2). All string lines should be set at equal heights above grade (3 – 5 inches) for 30’ wide GH w/3’ leg assembly. Variation in this
dimension will ultimately affect building height.
Marking Holes and Strings
With a 100 foot tape, measure and mark string and ground with paint at center location for each leg.
Re-check your measurements
Remove strings and dig holes 10 inches in diameter and 2-½ feet deep.
For 2-3/8 and 2-7/8 dig holes 12” to 18” in diameter.
Restring and offset the string line ½ of the diameter of the legs. This string line now represents the outside edge of your greenhouse legs. (DIAGRAM
#1)
Next, mark each leg at string level. On standard houses this will be at the predrilled hole.

DIAGRAM # 1
Setting Legs
Prepare legs by taping ends to be set in concrete. This will prevent legs from filling with concrete and interfering with bow installation.
Fill holes, one at a time, with a thick mix of concrete (2 ½ to 3 ½ inch slump). Holding the post level on the leg, slide the leg into the concrete slowly while checking plumb. Be sure you are on the correct side of your offset string! Sink leg until leg mark (or predrilled hole) is level with string. (Not deeper than 24”). Holes must face to the outside of the greenhouse side walls. Double check plumb. Repeat for all legs. Let concrete set for 24 hours before lifting bows into place.
