Merlin for GPRS Modem Components
The Merlin fo r GPRS mod em has th ree gene ral comp onents:
•The antenna,
•The PC Card, and
•The SIM card slot.
Figure 1 shows a top view of the modem and indicates the location of the general

The PC Card
The PC Card, shown in Figure 1, contains the modem’s circuitry. When this card
is inserted into your computer’s PC Card slot, the antenna extends outside of the
slot. To prevent damage , you shou ld alwa ys remove the mo dem fro m the PC Car d

The SIM Card Slot
You must insert your SIM card into the SIM card slot, shown in Figure 1, in order for your modem
to access your GP RS or GSM network ac count informa tion and connect to the netwo rk. See
“Using the S IM card” on pa g e 2 for more information.
The Antenna
The Merlin for GPRS mod em’s antenna c an be r otated in many directi ons to rece ive the best
signal receptio n. Rotate the antenna u p an d o ut of the way when you i ns ert the modem into yo ur
computer’s PC Card slot. Fold the antenna against the back of the modem for storage, as shown
in Figure 2, once you h ave rem oved it fr om your c omputer.

Using the SIM Card
In order to use your Merl in for GPRS modem, you mus t have a GSM/GPRS netw ork account. Y ou r
network account information is stored on the SIM card, shown in Figure 3.

The SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card contains a small amount of memory and a processor
to assist in the managemen t of your ac count inform ation.

The SIM card uses contact points to connect with the modem. You must take care not to damage
the contact point .
The orientation notch is used as a reference for properly inserting the SIM card into the modem.
Inserting the SI M card inco rrectly wil l prevent the mod em from communica ting with the ne twork.

The SIM card is in serted into the SI M Card Slo t, as shown in Figure 4.

Verify that SIM card contacts face downward and that the orientation notch is located at the
outside edge of the mode m.
Removing the SIM Card
Remove the SIM card by sliding the SIM Card Eject Button, located on t he top of th e modem,
shown in Figu re 5.

Inserting the Modem into Your Computer
To i nsert your Merl in for GPRS m odem, loc ate the PC Ca rd slot on y our compute r, rotate the
antenna into the upright position, verify that the modem is face up, and insert the front end of the
modem into th e PC Card s lot.

The PC Card slots must be able to accept Type II PC Cards.

Removing the Modem from Your Computer
To re move the Merl in for GPRS m odem, first click the PC Card tray icon (located in the
bottom-right corner of your desktop) to stop the modem. A message will appear instructing you
that it is now s afe to rem ove your mo dem. Pres s the PC Card slot e ject button and remove the
modem from the PC Card sl ot.

Modem Software
Before you can use your Merlin for GPRS PC Card modem, you must first install
the GPRS Modem Manager software. This chapter will guide you through the
installation pr ocedure.
Note:
The installation procedure that you will use depends on the operating system of
your PC.
To i nstall the GP RS Modem Manager s oftware on a Window s 98, 2000, ME, or
XP platform, p lease see the ins tallation p rocedure below.
To install the GPRS Modem Manager software on a Windows NT 4.0 platform,
please see pa ge 9.
Do not insert the modem into your computer until prompted by the Setup
program.

Before you begin the installation procedure, verify you have the following items.
• Merlin for GPRS PC Card modem,
• Type II PC Card slot,
• Installation CD for Merlin GPRS PC Card modem,
• Internet browser so ftware (for exampl e Microsoft Int ernet Explorer ® 5),
• GPRS/GSM account with a service provider.

To install the GPRS Modem Manager software:
1.Insert the Installat ion CD in to the CD d rive of y our comput er. The Installation progra m will
automatically launch, a nd displa y the Welcom e window, shown in Figure 6
.

2.Read the cont ents of the window and c lick Next to continue. The License Agreement
window will be displayed , shown i n Figure 7 .

3.Read the Licen se Agreem ent and cl ick I have re ad and agree to the abo ve terms if you
are satisfied w ith the c onditions of the ag reement.
4.Click Next to continue. The Destination Folder window will be displ ayed, as shown in
Figure 8.

5.Select the desired folder for the Modem Manager software installation. Most users will select
the default directory. If you would like a shortcut to the GPRS Modem Manager placed on
your desktop, select the Place a shortcut on the desktop check box.

6.Click Next to continue. The Installing window will be displayed, shown in Figure 9. The
Modem Manage r program will be i nstalled in the folder indicated previous ly.

Once the Modem Manager has been successfully installed, the Installation Complete
window will be displayed , shown i n Figure 1 0.

Installing the GPRS Modem Manager Software
on Windows NT 4.0
Before you begin the installation procedure, verify you have the following items.
• Windows NT 4.0 (service pack 6). See www.windowsupdates.microsoft.com for updates.
• Merlin for GPRS PC Card modem,
• Type II PC Card slot,
• Internet browser software (for example Microsoft Internet Explorer® 5),
• GPRS/GSM ac count wit h a serv ice provi der.
Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 does not support plug and play. Before you can operate the
Merlin for GPRS modem, you must first install a third-party PC card enabling application (e.g.
TouchStone® CardWare™: http://www.touchstone-sc.com/products/products.htm)
Note:
Y ou need to install the PC card-enabling software before you insert the PC Card modem into
your Type II PC card slot. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the PC card
enabling software. The installation procedure below uses TouchStone® CardWare™ as an
example.

Before you begin installing the Modem Manager application, you must first install the Merlin for
GPRS modem driver s. You will be required to c omplete the follo wing actions in order to
successfully install the Merlin for GPRS modem drivers:
• Verify the modem’s COM por t,
• Install the modem drivers, and
• Configure the modem’s properties and dial-up networking.
Once you have completed the actions listed above, launch the Merlin for GPRS Modem Manager
Setup procedure, loc a ted on the In stall ation CD. After you have succ ess fu lly install e d th e Me rli n
for GPRS modem dr ivers and M odem Manag er softwar e, you wil l be able to u se your Me rlin for
GPRS modem with your Int ernet applicati ons.
Verifying the PC Card COM port
To verify the PC card COM port:
1.Insert the Merlin f or GPRS mod em into your c omputer ’s Type II PC Card slot .
2.Start your computer and lo g on to W indows NT as “administrator”.

displayed, shown in Figure 13.

5.Select Novatel Wireless Merlin GPRS Modem and click Propertie s. The Modem Properties window will be displ ayed, shown in Figu re 14.

6.Record the COM port to which the Merlin GPRS modem is mapped. In t his exam pl e the m odem
is mapped to Com 3.

7.Click OK. The PC Card (PCMCIA) Devices window will be displayed, shown in Figur e 15.

8.Click OK to close the window. You will be returned to t he Control Panel.
Installing the Modem Drivers
To install the Merlin for GPRS modem drivers:
1.Double-clic k the Modems icon fro m the Control Panel, shown in Figure 16.

2.Select the “D on’t detect my modem; I will sele ct it from a list” check box and click Next
to continue. The fo llowing Install New Modem window will be displayed, shown in Figure 18.

3.Click the Have Disk button . The Install From Disk dial og box wi ll be displ ayed, s hown in
Figure 19.

4.Insert the Novatel GPRS Modem PC Card Installation CD into your computer, and explore
your CD drive (in this exampl e, D:/).
Note:
The Novatel Wireless Setup program may automatically launch during Step 4. You must quit
the Setup program in order to explore the CD.
5.Select Drivers/WinNT4. From the WinNT4 folder, select NwtGprs.inf and click OK to
continue. You will be returned to the Install New Modem shown in Figu re 20.

6.Click Next to continue. The Install New Modem wind ow will be dis played, shown in Fig ure

7.Ensure that the Se lected ports radio button is selected and the correct COM port, which
you recorded earlie r, is highlighted.

To c onfigure the modem ’s properties and dia l-up netwo rking:
1.Select Novatel Wireless Merlin GPRS Modem from the Modem Properties window
modem list and click Properties, shown in Figure 23. The Novatel Wireless Merlin GPRS Modem Properties window will be displayed, shown in Figure 24.
