Thank you for choosing Novatel Wireless and welcome to the MobiLink Lite User Guide for Windows, for use with Ovation
MCD990D. This  ve-band Mobile Broadband USB Modem operates over high-speed networks in the UMTS and GSM bands, enabling you to connect at high speeds to the Internet, your corporate Intra­net, and your email while you’re away from the o ce.
This User Guide outlines the steps necessary to install and con g­ure MobiLink Lite on your PC and how to use the MobiLink Lite applications.

Caring for your device
As with any electronic device, Ovation MC990D must be handled with care to ensure reliable operation. Novatel Wireless recom­mends the following handling guidelines:
Do not apply adhesive labels to the device; they may cause the
device to potentially overheat and they may alter the perfor-
mance of the antenna.
The USB connector should plug easily into your computer’s
standard (Type A) USB port. Forcing the device into a port may
damage the connector.
Protect the device from liquids, dust, and excessive heat.
Store the device in a safe place with the protective cap on
when not in use.

Do not insert Ovation into a USB hub, as it may not function properly due to insu cient power.
Before pluggng the MC990D into your computer, insert the (U)SIM card supplied by your service provider.
Insert the SIM card into the Ovation MC990D slot as shown 1.
below.
Push the SIM card completely into the slot.2.
You must have an account with a service provider. Your service pro­vider may have provided activation instructions in this packaging. Otherwise contact your service provider for complete instructions.

Install MobiLink Lite
Insert the MC990D into your laptop’s USB port.1.
MobiLink Lite automatically installs.2.
Activate your device with a service provider and create a pro-3.
 le (see Creating Pro les).
Launch MobiLink Lite and connect as described in 4. Con gure
MC990D.

Con gure Ovation MC990D
You can con gure your mobile broadband device to automatically connect to the network when you power up your system or manu­ally connect and disconnect using the Connect/Disconnect button in the main window. You can also employ a PIN code to unlock
your mobile broadband device on startup.
To con gure your device
Right-click on the MobiLink Lite icon in the system tray and 1.
select Settings > Con guration from the popup menu.
From the 2. Connection Mode drop-down list, select your de-
vice.
If you want to auto-connect when you start your computer, 3.
select Auto-Connect. If you choose this option, the device
will be up, running, and connected by the time you log into
Windows.

To introduce a PIN code to unlock your notebook computer, 4.
select the Auto-Lock On Power Up check box and enter the
PIN code in the Pin Code box.
To change the PIN code, click the 5. Change Pin Code... button
to open the Change Pin Code dialog box, enter the current PIN
code in the Current Code box and the new code in the New
Code and New Code Con rm boxes, and click OK.
If you unlock your mobile broadband device using the PUK 6.
code provided by your service provider, the PIN code is auto-
matically set to “0000”.
To set a roaming alarm, select the 7. Show roaming alarm check
box on the Miscellaneous tab. This noti es you if you connect
to a network other than your home network. There are two
network states: recommended networks and other roaming
networks.

Managing connectivity
Once your mobile broadband device is installed, connecting to the Internet is as simple as starting the MobiLink software and clicking the Connect button.
To connect to the network
Right-click on the MobiLink Lite icon in the system tray and 1.
select Open MobiLink Lite from the popup menu.
The MobiLink Lite window shows the current status of the Ovation MC990D device.
In the MobiLink window, click 2. Connect. The button changes to
Disconnect.

To minimize the MobiLink Lite window while staying connect-3. ed, click on the Minimize icon in the upper right corner of the MobiLink Lite window.
To disconnect from the network, click 4. Disconnect.

This chapter brie y describes the hardware features of Ovation MC990D and reviews how to use accessories for your device.
Inserting the device
When you connect Ovation MC990D, the following may occur once the device has been con gured correctly:
The device is powered as soon as you connect it to the Type A
USB (version 2.0) port of your computing device. Although the
modem is powered, it does not automatically connect to the
Internet.
The LED indicator on the device lights up.
If sound e ects are enabled on the computing device, it may
beep, notifying you that new hardware has been detected.

Remove the protective cap from the device. 1.
Hold the device along the side edges and gently insert the 2.
device into your computer’s Type A USB port. The MC990D
should  t easily into the USB port. Do not force the MC990D
into the USB port as this may damage both the device and the
USB port.
The Hardware Icon appears on the desktop. 3.
If you are experiencing trouble inserting the device into your computer’s USB port, verify that you are inserting the device the proper way and verify that you’re using a Type A USB port.
