Set-Ups
Because of the extra versatility of the 14" and IS" Type U-4
Universals you have these important time-saving advantages:
Rapid Chucking - The swiveling headstock has a
conventional dog drive plate on one end of the
spindle for your dead-center grinding - plus a
6" D-l cam-lock nose on the other end for you to
mount chucks or fixtures.
With the U-4, you may
leave a chuck on the cam-lock nose and just swivel
the headstock 180 degrees to make real time-savings
in setting up chucked jobs. Vvhen left on the cam-
lock nose, the chuck does not rotate when you
grind on dead centers
.
Fast Cha
ngeover - Turning a knob on the headstock -
and a plunger in the face plate - quickly changes
the headstock to live or dead spindle operation.
Simple Wo
rk Speed Change - You change work speeds
easily and quickly - in a range from 60 to 36O
r.p.m. - by turning a small hand wheel on the
headstock
pendent Settings of ‘
.
/'/heel and Feed - You make
independent angular settings of wheel and feed
for faster performance of normally difficult jobs
- the U-4 gives you swivels abov
e and below the
feed ways.
Ea^ryJ/

l Head Setting^ - Spring-loaded rollers
built into the lower swivel of the wheel head
facilitate angular settings and return of the
head to the conventional position.
Extra Capacity in Wheel_Head - You may increase
grinding capacity for angular grinds or other
special operations by repositioning the upper
wheel head member through a rack and pinion device.
r en
gth Capacity - You have additional capacity
for grinding long shafts - or for certain chucked
jobs - because of the 1-1/2" hole clear through the
headstock spindle
.

on front of the spindle housing - an important safety feature
• Permanent alignment of spindle is assured by bearing design
• Long bearing surfaces assure low unit pressure under heavy
loads - and enduring accuracy under heaviest service
A Fast Internal
Grinding Spindle
. The hinged-type internal grinding spindle which swings upward,
out-of-the-way when not in use, permits you to grind the O.D.
and I.D. of a workpiece without disturbing the set-up - an
important time-saving feature
. The anti-friction bearing cartridge type internal spindle is
quickly swung into the grinding position and is driven by its
own motor
. A flexible hose and nozzle directs a steady flow of coolant
on the work

Job Change-Over
. You make real time-savings by leaving a chuck on the 6
cam lock nose which is on one end of the spindle of the
swiveling headstock - and merely swiveling the headstock
n D-l
ISO degrees for doing chucking jobs
• The headstock spindle is a combination live-and-dead type,
and the chuck does not rotate when you grind on dead centers
• You quickly change over for use of either end of the spindle
because the headstock is easily swiveled
• Headstock swivel feature combines with swivel features of the
wheel head to give you added capacities for many special jobs
• Headstock adjustable speed work drive arrangement gives you
an infinite number of speeds within a range of 60 to 360
r.p.m. from A.C. power - gives you easy speed change - and
ample power throughout the entire speed range
. Work speed changes are quickly made by a small hand wheel on
the headstock which changes drive belt position on adjustable
pulley
• You get additional capacity - the headstock has a hollow
spindle which will take your work up to l-l/2
Tf diameter
clear through
• The headstock has a No
spindle
.
A No. 14 to No. 10 Jarno adaptor is furnished as
. 14 Jarno taper in both ends of the
standard
• Aligning pad on both sides of the headstock body provides a
fast, convenient means of precise swivel or straight setting
of headstock by indicating along pad
. Work rotation is controlled by a single lever that is easily
reached by your operator from his normal position
. In addition to providing starting and stopoing control, this
lever also permits work jogging for speedy* checkin* of work
run-out after mounting in chuck
