TYPE "C" HI-SWING
CRANKSHAFT
This grinder is, as its name implies, designed expressly for the grinding of long throw crankshafts such as those used in radial types of airplane motors, gas engines, compressors, etc., which require exceptional swing for clearance. The machine is also recommended for a variety of comparatively light work which, because of its shape or having projections, would otherwise require a much larger
and more expensive machine than the actual grinding operation indicates.
It is a heavy, rugged machine made to the closest degree of accuracy, special attention being paid to the design and construction of the equipment for grinding both crankpins and main bearings to the most exacting requirements for precision and finish.

DRIVE
:
All machines are arranged for direct motor drive. Three motors are required; one drives the grinding wheel spindle, a second drives the work and the third the table traverse and pumps. •
BASE
As in all Norton machines, the base construction is an important feature. Not only is the base casting massive, but the weight is correctly distributed to assure per manent alignment and freedom from vibration. A stiff cross section is obtained by thick walls and heavy ribs throughout. Ways for the sliding table and wheel slide of large area, one flat and one vee, are hand scraped and lubricated by a pressure feed system.
Bases for the 36" and 48" machines are constructed to rest on three points, the 72" machine requires a foundation and adjustable wedges are provided for maintaining alignment.
Both the
coolant
and lubricating oil tanks are integral with the base.
TABLES
Like the base, the tables are stiffly ribbed and proportioned to support without
distortion the heavy work heads used for crankpin grinding. The low type of swivel
:
table used facilitates handling of work in and out of the machine.
HEADSTOCKS
Two types are available, one with a fixed spindle and dead center which is suit
able for grinding crankshaft line bearings or other work on centers, and one having a live spindle for the convenient application of crankshaft workholders for crankpin
grinding.
Either type is motor driven by vee belts from the motor mounted on the head-
stock to a dutch shaft on which is fitted a brake for quick stopping. Starting and stop-

ping of the work revolution is controlled by a single convenient lever which operates both the clutch and brake and permits the motor to run continuously. Work centers are of hardened tool steel of large diameter and the headstock is firmly clamped to the swivel table by two bolts in a manner to insure alignment and prevent distortion. The faces of all drive plates or face plates are provided with tee slots for drive pins.
In the dead center headstock the drive plate revolves on the large and heavy spindle which is tightly fitted into the headstock body. The drive from the clutch shaft to the drive plate is by silent chain running in an oil bath. An adjustable idler main tains proper chain tension.
The live spindle headstock has a spindle mounted'in large anti-friction bearings
and the drive plate revolves with the spindle. The same type of chain drive is used for transmitting power from the clutch shaft to the drive plate. The face of the drive plate

is finished to run true and is provided with tee slots for drive pins and key slots for the application of crankpin grinding workholders.
FOOTSTOCKS
Two types of footstocks are built, one with a sliding spindle and dead center and
the other with a live spindle revolving in anti-friction bearings. Both types are of ex ceptionally sturdy construction and are clamped to the table by two bolts in the same manner as the headstock.
The sliding spindle footstock is operated by a screw and hand wheel although if preferred, a toggle lever can be substituted for moving the spindle. A hardened tool steel center of large diameter is fitted to the spindle and provision is made for mounting a diamond tool holder on the center.
The live spindle footstock is designed for the application of a crankshaft work- holder to the large flange on the spindle. The face of the flange is machined to run per
fectly true and provided with large keys for driving the workholder.

WORKHOLDERS FOR CRANKPIN GRINDING
These are devices for holding the crankshaft in the right off-center position so
that the crankpin axis will be in line with the axis*of rotation of the headstock spindle.

HEADSTOCK WORK HOLDER
WITH OUTBOARD BEARING
:
Workholders are available for mounting on the live spindle headstock drive plate and on the flange face of the live spindle footstock. Both types carry crank holders which are clamping devices for holding the crankshaft in the desired position.
The headstock workholder is made of an aluminum alloy to minimize the weight and the outer end is supported by an outboard bearing clamped to the swivel table and having adjustable bearing shoes. Footstock workholders are seldom used for grinding radial engine cranks but are required when long cranks for in-line types of engines are
ground. The footstock workholder is usually quite short as it supports the short end of the crank, no outboard bearing is required for the footstock workholder.
Locating brackets at both Headstock and footstock ends are used to align the two workholders when a crankshaft is placed in the machine. Locking pins which slide
in the locating brackets fit slots in the workholders holding them in alignment while
the crankshaft is clamped in the crankholders. These pins are then withdrawn per
mitting the work to revolve with the workholders.

CRANKPIN GRINDING
Most designs of radial engine crankshafts require a workholder for the headstock only, and if the machine is to be used exclusively for grinding the crankpins of such shafts a footstock is not required. If, however, the end of the crankpin is centered or
chamfered it may be desirable to use a screw type footstock to support this end. Such
an
arrangement supplemented with a center point fitted to the workholder flange in a
position to contact the centered end of the shaft nearest the headstock, makes ceptionally rigid support for maintaining accurate alignment of the crank while the pin
is being ground.
an ex-
FLANGE GRINDING
Faces of flanges can be ground perfectly flat and square with the crankpin in the same set up by using the edge of a wheel having slightly tapered sides to provide relief and reduce the area of contact between wheel and work.

is such that separate machines for crankpin and other grinding operations would not be kept busy, these various cylindrical grinding jobs can be done in the same machine as the crankpins by removing the workholders and using the regular centers in headstock
and footstock. In some cases main bearings can be ground on radial engine cranks with out removing the large headstock workholder. A center point fitted to the front of the workholder directly below the work clamp and in line with the headstock spindle

holder clamp. If cranks are to be purchased be of ample length.
designed that they may be accurately re-located. Workholder flanges are dowelled and keyed to spindle flanges and the steel ring of the headstock workholder which runs in the outboard bearing is ground round and true when the workholder is first mounted and aligned. These surfaces, therefore, with dowelled location provide very convenient means for re-location and alignment, and truth of running can be checked with an in
dicator.

WHEEL FEED, HAND AND AUTOMATIC
A hand-operated grinding wheel feed which indexes to tenths of thousandths of
an inch is provided on all machines. The feed operates through a large diameter feed
screw
and half nut which are lapped together. This combination is virtually a large,
accurate micrometer so generous in its proportions that it will retain its accuracy for the
entire life of the machine. Ease of action is assured by the feed screw being mounted in
ball bearings. The screw runs in an oil bath, thus providing continuous lubrication.
For
traverse grinding operations feed of the grinding wheel is automatic at each reversal of the sliding table. Automatic feed on plunge cut operations can be had by means of continuous cross feed attachments
available as
extra
equipment.
POWER WHEEL HEAD TRAVERSE
An attachment is also available providing fast power traverse of the wheel head.
This device is very convenient when grinding cranks with several crankpins or where
large differences in diameters or projections between, make it necessary to move the
wheel head in and out a considerable distance frequently.
TABLE TRAVERSE
Power traverse of the sliding table is by means of a rack attached to the under side of the sliding table engaging a pinion operated through a gear reduction and re versing mechanism. A handwheel is provided for manual operation. The reversing
mechanism consists of a clutch which engages first
and then the other of two bevel

opposite sides, of and continually in mesh with a bevel gear. Clutch and
made of an alloy steel and the clutch teeth are hardened.
Power
for driving the table traverse is through a speed change mechanism com prising a cone pulley and gear box. The drive to the cone pulley is by flat belt from an anti-friction backshaft. Changes in speed are easily and quickly made without stopping the work, wheel or table.
GRINDING WHEEL UNIT
The grinding wheel unit is completely self-contained. The great weight of the complete unit and the large spindle supported in long bearings which can be closely adjusted are responsible to a large degree for the superior quality of finish obtainable.
WHEEL SLIDE—The heavy wheel slide is of the compound type and moves on long, broad and widely separated ways, one flat and one vee shaped, lubricated by the same force feed oiling system as the table ways.
WHEEL SPINDLE—The wheel spindle is made from carefully selected and heat treated alloy steel. It is very large and heavy and runs in long, bearings widely separated. Both ends of the spindle are tapered, one taper nose receives the grinding wheel on its balancing sleeve and the other the vee belt sheave for the drive from the motor.
WHEEL SPINDLE BEARINGS—Are made of hard bronze tapered on the outside for adjustment to compensate for wear. End thrust of the spindle is positive and is distributed over a large area by a special design of thrust bearing. Bearings are flood lubricated from a geared oil pump driven directly from the spindle itself. The flow of oil is visible through glass windows in the wheel slide.

otherwise stated, all motors specified are plain bearing open frame motors. If fan cooled motors with enclosed frames are to be used, it will be necessary for customer to send cer tified dimension sheets for checking to be sure no interference would prohibit their use.
Where no direct current is available for adjustable speed headstock motors,
generators may be used and mounted on the machine.
All motors should be mounted at our factory ip order that they may be exactly fitted and their rotors carefully balanced to eliminate vibration. Headstock motors, without exception, must be mounted at the factory and should be received at least two weeks before the scheduled date for shipment of the machine.
MACHINE EQUIPMENT AND ATTACHMENTS
Because of the great variety of work for which these machines are adapted there is no fixed standard equipment. Those mechanisms and attachments required for the work to be done are selected from a very complete line.
A wide variety of optional or auxiliary equipment is available, including head- stocks, footstocks, wheel guards, wheel sleeves, wheel truing devices, center pointing
device, steadyrests and work drive dogs. Also special crankshaft grinding equipment headstock crank workholder with outboard bearing, footstock crankpin grinding drive plate with crank holder, extra crank holders, special heavy duty live spindle head- stocks, table locating device, work aligning brackets, jib crane and adaptor for handling
