The Norton 6" x 18" (also built in 10" swing)
and the 10" Type CV-4 and 14" Type LCV-4
angular wheelslide semiautomatics eliminate the
extra "shoulder-bumping"
operation normally
necessary when grinding thrust surfaces and
adjacent diameters in conventional cylindrical
grinders. They grind these surfaces simultane
ously by a 30° feeding action.
In addition to the economy of combining two
operations, these machines perform certain op
erating functions speedily and automatically.
This contributes to the over-all economy of oper
ation. Normal operation—where work is cen
tered or chucked with relation to shoulders to be
ground—requires only three functions by the
operator: (1) loading; (2) pulling the one-lever
control; (3) unloading.
As with all Norton semiautomatics, pulling the
one-lever control starts the grinding cycle, work
rotation and coolant flow. This relieves the
operator of these tasks and permits him to per
form other duties.

full automatic cylindrical
grinder — type CTU
This machine grinds concentric cylindrical parts at
consistently high rate. The results that ordinarily
depend on operator skill and dexterity are obtained
in the Full Automatic mechanically. The machine
is set to function in the shortest time feasible for the
stock removal and finish requirements involved and
it repeats in this time for each piece. Automatic
wheel truing which is standard, and other special
arrangements which are available at extra cost, step
up the productiveness of the machine. Further de
tails are given in Catalog No. 1468.

cycle operates under simple “one-lever
An automatic truing device mounted in back of the
grinding wheels trues all wheels simultaneously on
touch of a pushbutton—and trues
wheels in combination. Normally, individual truing
units true each wheel, and all wheels in the set-up,
straight and formed, are trued together as the device
is traversed hydraulically only a distance equal to the
widest wheel. Compensation for wheel diameter
reduction resulting from truing occurs automatically.
The heavy grinding wheel spindle takes multiple 36"
diameter wheels between bearings to a maximum
over-all span of 30" including spacing collars. Grinding
wheel change involves no disturbance of wheel spindle
bearing adjustments.
The machine makes possible important cost-savings
by producing a group of precisely finished line-diam

This machine grinds contours on automotive-type
camshafts to highest quality standards at lowest
costs. Its automatic functions assure consistent,
high output and simplify operating duties to the
point where an operator can tend two or more
machines.
An automatically controlled work speed arrange
ment aids production and quality by providing
two work speeds while each cam contour is being
ground. The higher speed is the optimum rate
for rapid stock removal, and the slower is the best
rate for accuracy of contour and fine finish. Quality
of finish is also aided by an all-timing-belt work
drive which produces extremely smooth work
rotation by eliminating slippage.
Important advantages aiding output also come
from an Automatic Wheel Guard Type Truing
Device. This eliminates manual effort and goes
into operation immediately after the last contour
on the camshaft has been ground. With this
machine there is no delay or interval before truing
for special positioning of any component.
A patented feature of this machine permits grind
ing tapers on cams in either one or both
directions. Catalog No. 191.

For semiautomatic grinding of cams or special
shapes, Norton CAM-O-UNIT Mechanisms ap
plied to Type CTU Semiautomatic Grinders,
provide excellent, low-cost service. As with the
CAM-O-MATIC Grinder No. 3, the contour is
produced by swinging the work as it revolves
by means of a master cam in contact with a roller.
Some types of cams are held on arbors or fixtures
on the master cam spindle. Others, such as
automotive-type camshafts, are carried on centers
—
one center being in the master cam spindle and
the other in a footstock clamped to the rocking
bar (swinging member),
CAM-O-UNIT Mech-
anisms are exceptionally sturdy and enduringly

AUTOMATION
For high production, lowest cost grinding and lapping opera
tions on many type of parts required in large quantities,
Norton Company provides several automatically functioning
machines—as well as arrangements which automate other
Norton machines. These produce
at high rate with a minimum
of attention or effort.
The speedy consistency with which this equipment performs,
produces substantial savings in time and costs over results
which can be obtained with conventional machines. It also
provides the additional benefit of conserving skills for other
tasks.
The
Norton Transfer Type Crankpin Grinder (shown below);
the Type CTU Full Automatic (page 10), and the Thru-Feed
and Automatic Continuous Feed Arrangements available for

This machine assures exact tool form duplication. It
uses a master template or cam generated from a master
tool. By this accurate mechanical means, the machine
produces in the production tool exact duplication of
the master tool.
The machine is generously proportioned throughout.
Its wheel spindle is exceptionally rugged. Conse
quently, this machine produces a quality of tool finish
that assures maximum performance and tool life. It
is especially recommended for grinding carbide-tipped
tools. Catalog No. 220 gives further particulars.

NORTON
10" universal
grinder
12" universal grinder — type U-4
10" and 12"
The Norton 10" and 12" universal grinders provide
unusual flexibility for handling a wide range of jobs.
They are particularly easy to set up and operate—a
feature which provides important savings on many
normally time-taking jobs.
The headstock spindle has a conventional dog drive
plate on one end and a camlock spindle nose on the
other. This camlock nose takes many types of jaw
and speed chucks. Where much chucking of the work-
piece is required, setup is greatly simplified by leaving
the chuck on the spindle and merely swiveling the
head when required.
The headstock spindle accommodates a bar clear
through. Therefore, a workpiece longer than the
machine may be ground by chucking at one end and
allowing the rest of the piece to pass through the
headstock.
The internal grinding spindle, driven by a separate
motor, is a quickly-positioned, hinged-bracket type.
It is therefore possible to swing the internal spindle
up out of the way when doing external grinding—or
to position it quickly for internal grinding. The com
pound swivel arrangement of the wheelslide enables
the operator to set the wheel at any angle and to feed
at any angle. Catalogs No. 170 (10") and No. 231
(12") give further details.

lapping machine — No. 12-F
The No. 12-F is a high output, parallel face flat lapping
machine for small work, and is equipped with bonded abra
sive laps. It is available in three arrangements: plain, timed
cycle; automatic continuous feed; semiautomatic continuous
feed. All three provide fast lapping and the continuous
arrangements provide in addition, the production benefits
of continual operation with only a brief occasional interlude
for lap dressing. With all arrangements, the machine pro
vides selective lap speed and selective work holder speed.
This gives flexibility, permitting precise setting of ideal
speeds for each job. With all arrangements the cleanliness
of the finished surfaces—particularly on parts of soft metals
—
eliminates the need for cleaning operations, with resulting
savings in time and costs.

HYPROLAP
high production
lapping machine — No. 36-F
This machine provides the means for obtaining substantial cost
reduction in performance of single face flat lapping operations
especially on parts of soft metals such as cast iron, magnesium and
aluminum alloys. Flat lapping is faster with the No. 36-F and is
:
cleaner due to the efficient abrading action of the bonded abrasive
lap which is flooded with filtered coolant during lapping. The
coolant washes away metal removed and leaves finished work clean
and free from grit. Three arrangements of the No. 36-F are avail
able: plain, timed cycle: automatic continuous feed, and semi
automatic continuous feed. With automatic and semiautomatic
continuous feed arrangements the high output action stops only for
infrequent dressing of the abrasive lap. Catalog No. 1665 provides
additional information.
