A Better Means —
A Better Tool
Benefits from Tool Control
The Norton No. 2 BURA-WAY* Tool Grinder provides a better means for grinding convex
single point and form tools because it generates, reproduces and maintains relief an gles constant as measured in the direction of
feed.
This advantage provides the entire
cutting edge of the tool with a uniform sup
port including those sections wherein curva ture, a radius or radii are involved. This unique capacity, plus the extreme rigidity of the machine, its spindle reciprocating feature, and the manner of tool support, results in a superior long-life tool which increases pro duction and lowers costs.
Precise DujMjcation
In grinding profile and relief, an original or master tool is used to generate a large-sized template. This template is used to duplicate any number of production tools all precisely alike. The template is also used to maintain and keep constant the correct profile and re
lief angles with each regrinding of the tool. With this machine, it is possible for the tool
designer to design the ideal tool that will
have the longest life and which will produce more pieces per sharpening.
la addition to these advantages, the No. 2 BURA-WAY Tool Grinder provides the
means whereby tremendous benefits may be realized through the medium of an effective tool crib control system. Because of exact duplication of the master or model tool form
by accurate mechanical means, this machine makes it possible to determine the life of the
edge of each cutting tool in each operation. This makes it possible to establish a control whereby each tool is returned to the crib
before its full cutting life is expended. These
tools may then be touched up with a light re- grinding, thus avoiding salvaging operations.
Benefits of Cylindrical Grind
With the No. 2 BURA-WAY Grinder the
benefits of the cylindrical type of grind are
obtained. Heretofore, this type of grind on a
cutting tool was not possible with existing
equipment. With the cylindrical type of grind,
the maximum possible support under the cut
ting edge of the tool is obtained, thus assuring
better cutting action and longer tool life. With
these advantages, the tool designer benefits by the removal of design limitations, preventing
producing most efficient tool shapes.
Universal
Tool Holder
The Universal Tool Holder supplied with the machine holds tool bits up to 2" square shank. Setups are simple and accurate, precisely dupli cated, and can be quickly made. For grinding
the rake angle, a special fixture is available. Angles ground are under positive control and tool form is not changed, but is automatically maintained with each regrinding.
long Life for Ca
Carbide tipped tools have extremely long life when ground and reground in this precision
machine which is built to.the most exacting standards. These result in exceptionally
smooth operation which, with the manner of tool support, assures a smooth, keen cutting
edge so important to the life of the tool.

TOOL
The same tool ground the Bura-way has constant relief in the direction of feed, and uniform support under the cutting edge at all sections, including the radius. It has the greatest support
and greatest capacity for heat dissipation.
Actually,
as measured in the direction of feed, is about greater than at section AA. By following a special procedure, even this slight increase in the angle can be eliminated, but is unnecessary for all practical purposes.

Support
When ground the Bura-way, the relief angle varies, as measured
radially. However in the direction of feed, the angle of relief is constant and the cutting-edge support is uniform at all points and the maximum material is available for greatest heat dissipa tion as shown by sections AA, BB and CC.

Advantages that produce a
UNIVERSAL TOOL HOLDER
The Universal Tool Holder can be tilted and rolled
for clearance and rake angles. This fea
ture makes it possible to attain the cylindrical

grind rather than the conventional grind,
when the table is flat. The tool holder is also
adjustable laterally for side cutting edge. A Master Tool Protractor Attachment to adapt the tool holder for grinding the cutting edge angle on
model tools is available at extra cost.
GRINDING MODEL TOOLS
This machine makes possible the grinding of a
model
tool. With the Master Tool Protractor and the Universal Angle Gage which is also available as an extra, it is possible to make a model tool from a bar of plastic material or soft steel. The various steps in this process are shown
in
the chart on the next page.

TEMPLATES
Once the model tool is made, a template is ground from the model tool. Templates are also
made from master tools. Thereafter, regu lar production tools are reground from the tem plate and the shape or location of the tool is always assured from one grind to another with . absolute duplication through accurate mechani cal means. Steps in regrinding production tools are shown on page 9.
This is an important advantage, especially for automatic machines using multiple tool setups. These tools can be sharpened in the No. 2
BURA-WAY Tool Grinder and then set back in the automatic machine quickly from a refer ence point without going through the process of indicating
each and every tool.
The template material is a plastic which is very easy to grind. In addition, templates are easily marked for the tilt and roll settings of the tool holder as well as the tool number, so that setups can be duplicated quickly each and every time
that particular type of tool is to be ground.
