WHEEL FEED ACCELERATOR
%
This device increases production on grinding jobs where a lack of uniformity in stock removal presents a problem. It may
be applied to the following NORTON Semiautomatic Grinding Machines: 4", 6" & 10" Type CTU, 10" & 14" LCTU, 10"
CV-4 and 14" LCV-4 Angular, 42" Hi-Swing Chucking and Semiautomatic Valve Grinders.
It is especially valuable where variation in work diameters exceeds .012". Normally, the wheel is set up to accommodate
the largest work diameter, otherwise the rapid wheel head traverse would cause the wheel to contact the work forcibly which
might result in an accident. The accelerator permits the operator to accelerate the rate of feed up to the point where the
wheel contacts the work as evidenced by sparks.
The cycle operates as follows:
Operator pulls "one-lever" control (B), causing a rapid advance of grinding wheel to large diameter setting,
I.
a. A quick transition from the rapid advance to conventional grinding feed rate occurs.
2. If no spark is visible, operator again pulls lever (B) actuating valve (A), thus by-passing grinding feed valve (E) and
causing a speed-up in grinding feed, thereby permitting metered oil from cylinder (D), which is controlled by valve
(E), to flow at a faster rate through valve (A). At the moment wheel sparks, lever (B) is released and normal grinding
feed is resumed. It is very important to release this lever as soon as spark appears!
3. At a predetermined point, adjustable finger (F) on actuating lever (G) contacts cam on pawl guard (H), causing
actuation of limit switch (C), which starts timing motor (J). The adjustable finger is adjustable from 0 to .005"
oversize of the work piece.
4. Automatic termination of the cycle occurs when timing motor times out—including automatic resetting of the wheel
feed.
