SPECIAL GAP TABLE
CYLINDRICAL
The job illustrated here necessitated a number of special features. The machine had to be
a gap table type capable of swinging 34" in the gap as compared with the standard of 24".
Furthermore, the range of work to be ground required a considerably longer gap length than is
norma
table ordinarily supplied for gap table machines. To make the problem still more interesting the
machine had to grind 33" maximum diameter and 3" minimum, thus necessitating the provision
of an exceptional work speed range. Unusually fine finishes were required and, therefore a roll
grinding type of wheel slide was furnished.
lly furnished and finally, the machine had to be a swivel table model instead of the single

Since the weight of the
work was well within the capac
ity of a 16" machine, a stand
ard model was modified to
include the necessary features.
The stems of these spindles
are ground to ± .0001" for
roundness and straightness and
a finish of from 2 to 3 micro
inches—RMS, free of any blem
ishes whatsoever is produced.
Here is another example of
the adaptation of standard
Norton machines
