Introduction
The DYNA-TRU Truing and Dressing System is the
result of field requirements, test experience, and the desire of
Norton Company to provide improved products for grinding.
History
Abrasive wheels used in precision grinding have always
required dressing and truing.
Dressing to condition the wheel for
fast cut; truing to prepare the wheel to produce good work.
Few changes have taken place in this field during recent
years and yet, truing and dressing continue to play a major part in
the performance of any precision grinding wheel. This area for
potential improvement required investigation.
Research
The preliminary work involved an analysis of existing
methods,
their limitations, and potentials. Actual field experience
in customer plants revealed that the basic capability of several
existing techniques was limited in application. Norton Company
believed that an improvement in the design and application of these
products would provide not only new potential for the tools, but would
improve on their present operational characteristics. The development
of a new truing tool and the means for applying the tool were required.
-2-
Page 4
Development
The application considered was the use of a diamond
impregnated truing roll as a truing tool. Testing revealed that
standard diamond wheels were unsuited for the operation because of
high cost and limited performance.
developed to meet this need.
Uniform diamond distribution combined
DIA-CROWN Truing Rolls were
with bonds of superior durability and holding power characterizes
this product. New manufacturing and finishing techniques condition
the product for its designed purpose - preparing a grinding wheel to
perform at maximum capability.
The application of DIA-CROWN Truing Rolls required
a new truing device. Extensive
testing of available devices and
modifications of these devices proved that performance versatility
combined with minimum roll and operational costs could best be
achieved with a power driven truing tool.
The DYNA-TRU Device is the result of this analysis and
four-year testing.
It combines the reliability, compact size, and
operating features necessary to achieve maximum benefit in roll
truing.
This is the DYNA-TRU Truing and Dressing System. Norton

When properly applied, this combination of value and performance
can increase production and reduce costs.

The DYNA-TRU Truing Device
The DYNA-TRU Truing Device is the body of the truing
system. The unit has been designed for reliable performance and
rapid adaptation to a broad range of production grinding equipment.
For traverse and feed the available equipment and controls of the
grinder are employed. The positive drive of the truing wheel with
enough usable power for traverse truing provides performance
characteristics suitable for any straight face truing operation.
Shown above is the complete unit ready for installation.
The DIA-CROWN Truing Roll and mounting adapter shown as part of
the device are considered accessaries to this equipment.

The system is adaptable to manual or automated operations
involving straight face traverse type truing. On operations where
truing costs are high or on operations where increased production is
required, the DYNA-TRU System should be investigated. Those
operations where finishes below 15 r. m. s. must be achieved or
where metal removal rates are low are not suited to this system.

The lower power consumption common to wheels trued with the system is indicative of increased cutting ability and a decrease in the amount of heat generated at the point of contact. The grinding wheel might be called "super sharp. "
These features
can result in:
1.
A reduction in workpiece distortion.
2.
Closer sizing and improved quality control.

The combining of roughing and semifinishing

Pieces Per Dressing
The number of pieces per dressing achieved with any
grinding wheel is a direct result of three factors:
1. The grinding wheel specification
2. The operating techniques
3. The dressing method and product employed
Sometimes the grinding wheel may be changed to improve
pieces per dressing, but only to a limited extent.
operations
conditions are fixed, i. e. , stock removal, part size, etc.
On most production
The most marked changes in performance can be accomplished through
the use of proper truing products and methods.
The DYNA-TRU method of truing conditions the grinding
wheel for maximum pieces per dressing by:
a. Minimizing the damage to the abrasive bond posts
resulting in reduced rates of wear.
b. Conditioning each abrasive particle to maximum
sharpness resulting in reduced abrasive dulling and pressure build-up.
The many small diamond particles cut rather than
fracture the abrasive grains of the grinding wheel. Minimum stress is applied to each abrasive grain maintaining maximum sharpness without bond strength loss.
grinding wheel breaks down less rapidly and grinding pressures
The primary cutting surface of the
are minimized.
Since the condition of the truing roll remains constant, dressing pressures and wheel condition are the same from dressing to dressing. This results in uniform production rates and repeatable
results. Truing variables are minimized.
Grinding wheels which are trued with the DYNA-TRU
System perform at peak efficiency.
Size control can be improved and maintained. Finish control is consistent and stock removal rates kept at a maximum without wheel breakdown.
Actual testing has produced up to a 50%
increase in pieces per dress with no change in quality control. This can mean reduced grinding wheel costs, increased production,
and improved
quality.

Recommended Operating Procedures
1. Be sure the face of the grinding wheel and the face of the
truing wheel are parallel to each other. A .feeler gage placed
between the roll face and the wheel face is helpful in checking
parallelism.
2. Tighten all connections securely and be sure that the truing
wheel, when mounted is running in good truth.
3. Make sure that the truing wheel rotation is in the same direction
of rotation as the grinding wheel, so that at their point of contact
they are opposing each other.
4. Mark the reversing switch at the position for proper rotation.
Make sure proper rotation is achieved when starting the device.
Make sure the device is "on" when contact is made with the

grinding wheel.
6. Adjust the traverse stroke periodically to insure the device does
not contact the wheel guard of the machine on the exit side when
the grinding wheel approaches stub size.
7. To obtain maximum efficiency from the flexible shaft, maintain
a smooth curve if bending is necessary.
8.
Cable support hooks should be located so as not to allow the
flexible shaft to be bent directly at the motor or at the device
coupling.
-18-

Application and Adaptation
The DYNA-TRU System is designed for centerless,
cylindrical, and surface grinding operations.
The concept of
the technique and the design of the components were based on
application to these grinding operations.
In order to integrate all the known operational
requirements into the design and to make the unit adaptable to this range of equipment at low cost, it was found that some grinding machine adaptation and alteration would be necessary.
Grinding machines are not always standard in specific design
or size. Space restrictions in the adaptation and the use of
the device had to be considered.
The DYNA-TRU System employs the basic feed and
traverse controls of the grinder involved. The truing head
ME 83555 provides for the application of an adapter through
four bolt holes in the base.
The adapters mount and lock the head on the truing post, or table, for truing. The drive motor ME 83556 is placed outside the truing area and power is
transmitted to the head through the flexible shaft ME 83557.
The areas for consideration in determining the difficulty in
adapting the DYNA-TRU System are:
a. The space which can be made available between a
full-sized grinding wheel and the end of the mounting post. (32
M minimum)
b. The space between the side wheel guards and the
grinding wheel which can be made available for
traverse motion.
(7/8" on one side - 5" on the
other side).
c. The accessibility of the flexible drive shaft
to the truing area.
d. The necessary machine alterations or parts, i. e. ,
risers, ports, slots, etc. , required to mount and use the system.
The amount of difficulty involved in adapting the system
varies from machine to machine.
Later pages will deal with
available conversion and adapter kits, the use of this equipment,
and future planning for new equipment.

transmitting coolant to the truing roll during truing.
A traverse control stop (D137817) is shipped with
the adapter. The stop fits over the truing slide traverse stop
plug and can be used to adjust the length of truing stroke on the
exit side of the machine. This eliminates the possibility of running the truing roll into the side guard as the wheel nears stub size.
The surfacing adapter provides a flat surface for table mounting on magnetic chucks. It is attached to the device in the same manner as the centerless adapter. This adapter can also be used for mounting the device on cylindrical machine footstock or table mounts of a users own design.
Adapters for machines other than those mentioned are being designed.
However, the design of the device provides
for
mounting of adapters of any design. Users can design and build
simple adapters at low cost for a variety of equipment.
