FLAT LAPPING
WITH BONDED ABRASIVE LAPS AND DIAMOND TRUING ARM
This machine gives you superior results — speedily
— in lapping single face flat surfaces of large parts —
particularly those of softer metals such as cast iron,
aluminum and magnesium.
You get faster lapping with the machine because of
the extremely efficient abrading action of its bonded abrasive lap. The normally high efficiency of this lap is enhanced by selection of the best abrading material
for the job, in the lap specification.
Controlled rotation of the work, counter to its natural tendency, facilitates production by accentu ating lapping action. In addition, the path of work rotation is designed to uniformly utilize the entire lap
surface with resulting benefits in preservation of both lap accuracy and life.

MACHINE
You get cleaner lapping with the 60" Single Face
Flat Lapping Machine because there is no loose abra sive present. Surfaces produced are free from grit or
other foreign matter.
This
result—a surface jree from grit either imbedded or trapped in pores or crevices of the work — particu larly on soft metals — means important time savings.
This is because parts may be lapped to provide seal surfaces, wear surfaces, or surfaces to be subsequently milled or drilled — operation — because there is no loose abrasive adhering
or imbedded in the work.
The machine provides an additional advantage in
the action of its lap. This is production of bright sur
faces that require no subsequent polishing.

SUPERIOR RESULTS
Cieaner Work. Coated only by a thin, filtered oil, the surfaces finished by bonded abrasive
free from the sludge left by loose abrasives.
Brighter Surfaces. Bonded abrasive lapping pro duces brighter surfaces on any metal, with no later polishing required.
Safer. By keeping the pores and crevices of the metal free from imbedded grit, the bonded abrasive enables safe lapping of soft metals to provide seal surfaces, wear surfaces, or surfaces for drilling or milling. This also eliminates the need of thorough cleaning after lapping, to rid surfaces of imbedded abrasive.
Faster. Cutting speed, on many materials, is 2 fo 5 times faster than loose abrasive lapping for the amount of stock removal.
More accurate products. The simple, positive lap- truing device results in maximum product-accuracy
on every job. Greater Economy. Bonded abrasive laps are long-
lasting and easy to replace. A low priced coolant is
used. Inspection tools are subjected to less wear
than on parts lapped with loose abrasives. Labor

Automatic Operation. Requires only loading of machine and push-button starting to complete the electrically timed work cycle.
Large Capacity Range. Includes lap sizes of 48", and 60". Maximum size enables handling of three 24" pieces or one 60" piece (largest dimension).
for extra cleaning and polishing opera
WORKHOLDING ARRANGEMENTS
Two types of workholding arrangements are available. One consists of three work adaptors held in a fixed position relative to the lap, but caused to rotate by meshing with a geared central drive. Each adaptor is designed to hold one or more parts, depending upon part size. Each adaptor takes up to approximately 24" diameter. The other w'orkhold- ing arrangement is designed for larger parts where they might straddle the entire lap. In this case, a
single adaptor or workholder w'ith suitable aper tures is used.
FINISH and TRUTH
Because the finish and truth of the final product
in lapping is determined by the lap, the 60" Single Face Flat Lapping Machine gives you several sub stantial advantages. Beyond selection of a lap speci fication to produce fine finish, a further measure of finish control lies in the manner in which the lap
face is trued. This is done by a hydraulically actu ated truing selective. A fine rate for finish, or a coarse rate for accelerated lapping action is instantly established. The truing mechanism provides the equally impor-

COOLANT
Filtered coolant from an outside type reservoir, floods the lap face, washing away the during the lapping process, and reducing any tend ency of heat generation. The finished product re quires no subsequent cleaning can be used without additional attention.
WORK PRESSURE ARRANGEMENTS
It is often desirable or necessary to apply addi tional w-eight or pressure to the work in order to obtain the proper lapping action. This may be done in some instances by manual application of individ ual weights designed for the purpose. In those cases where mechanical application of weight is a hydraulic pressure device is available. With this device, twin hydraulic cylinders in a swinging over- arm raise and lower a tripod to which is attached suitable pressure plates that fit the work. The hydraulic cylinders also apply regulated pressure to
the plates. This arrangement assists production by
eliminating handling of work piece weights.
