GRINDING MACHINE
:
The metal working industry more and more is adopting the ground plane sur face from an economical standpoint as well as from considerations of appearance and accuracy. Many machine parts formerly scraped or filed are now surface ground. Each year the trend in this direction becomes more pronounced.
The demand of manufacturers for better and better machinery has placed a very definite responsibility on tool builders for more productive and sturdier equip ment capable of duplicating parts to closer tolerances, faster, belter and at less cost. For obtaining flat and parallel surfaces, where accuracy and finish are essential, N
C
ompany
offers the 10" Surface Grinding Machine. It is a tool of the reciprocating
orton
table type, the work passing back and forth under the grinding wheel which is carried in a traversable head and the spindle of which is at right angles to the direction of table travel. It is designed to
meet both the requirements of tool and die shops, and for
economical manufacturing production.
The work table reciprocation is hydraulically accomplished by an improved
type of hydraulic drive. The machine is furnished with both hydraulically operated
automatic power cross feed and hand cross feed.
BASE
The base is a single casting, sturdily ribbed and arranged to rest on three points.
No foundation, other than a good floor, is required. The front portion serves as an oil reservoir for the hydraulic mechanisms while the rear portion completely encloses the motor.

TABLE
The table is provided with one flat and one vce way and travels in correspond
ing ways in the base. These ways are generously proportioned to give firm support
and are lubricated by rollers set in pockets in the base ways. The table top is surface ground at assembly and checked for flatness with a master gage. Two standard tee slots for clamping work or magnetic chuck, run the full length of the table.
A tee slot in front carries the table reverse dogs operating the reverse lever and
which are quickly and easily set for the length of stroke desired.

DRIVE
Power is delivered by a belt directly from the motor pulley over antifriction bearing idlers with adequate provision for quick, easy take-up to the spindle pulley. A second belt, also direct from the motor, drives the oil pump for the hydraulic mecha nisms and the grinding coolant pump. Accessibility and convenience have been given

assured.
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
;
pressure hydraulic system. A gear pump, belted directly to the motor, draw's oil from the reservoir in the base. This oil passes through a reverse valve to a cylinder attached to the base beneath the table. In this cylinder is a piston, the rod of which is attached to one end of the table. Since all hydraulic connections are within the base any seepage drains back into the reservoir.
Simplicity and rugged serviceability are the keynotes in the design of the low
The table stop valve in the pressure side of the line is used to stop and start
the table traverse and is operated by a convenient lever on the front of the machine.

By an adjustment on the operating
lever the amount the valve opens can be controlled and thus the table speed regulated.
The reverse valve mechanism is a complete, totally enclosed unit attached to
the front of the base. It decelerates the table to a stop and accelerates it in the oppo
site direction at each reversal, smoothly, quietly and without shock.

The grinding wheel spindle is made of heat treated alloy steel and is mounted
in hard bronze boxes tapered on the outside to give a means of adjustment.
Power
and rigidity, essential for fine finish grinding, are assured.
On machines arranged for fast and slow hand cross feed, the fast feed is operated
by means of a hand wheel directly in front of
the
operators position while an auxiliary
hand wheel operating through a set of worm gears, gives a very fine cross feed for truing
or shoulder grinding. Adjustable positive stops are
provided to limit cross travel of
wheel as desired.

AUTOMATIC CROSS FEED
The Automatic Cross Feed is hydraulically operated and will cross feed the
grinding wheel at each table reversal when desired in varying amounts adjustable
up to a 1" stroke.
The
direction of the feed is automatically reversed at any desired point by the
setting of adjustable dogs. This automatic operation allows a freedom of supervision
and gives the operator time to reload another machine or to gage work already ground. The Automatic Cross Feed also provides a continuous power cross traverse of the wheel slide for wheel truing.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT FOR DIE GRINDING
The N
orton
10" Surface Grinding Machine can be arranged for grinding die
surfaces without removing the guide posts, otherwise known as guide or liner pins.
A special table, wheel slide and wheel guard and a 20" diameter grinding wheel are provided in this case. This permits grinding between the pins without removing them, a feature of particular advantage since permanent pins can be used. Dies can be kept in better condition because regrinding them is much easier and more econom
ical. New dies can be finished more quickly and, therefore, at less cost.
The diagram below illustrates the maximum capacity of the machine when arranged in this way. A study of it will show the variety of dies with pins which can be ground.
