Interface Control
Section 2.1
OVERVIEW
The unit has three connectors on the input side of the housing and one waveguide port on the output
side. The interface for these connectors is detai led in this document.
On the input side, t her e ar e the f ollowing c onnec tors:
J1 – Female N-type L-band IF Input
J2 – Ten pin circular c onnec tor
J3 – Four pin circular power connector
On the output side, there is one connector:
J4 – WR75 or WR62 waveguide RF output ( specif y at time of order)
Section 2.2
J1–INPUT
BUC
The IF input is a 50 ohm type-N connector. The input is to be applied here (950-1700 MHz for Extended
Band; 950-1450 MHz f or Regul ar B and) . Also, the 10 MHz signal input is diplexed onto this line.
Therefore, the IF si gnal and 10 M Hz ref er enc e ar e both traveling on this line. The connec tor is DCblocked. Do not exceed +/- 50V DC on this port.
The 10-MHz signal should be ac c ur ate within +/-20ppm, other wise the B UC m ay have difficulty phase
locking to it. The 10-M Hz should be f ree of sideband spurs, parti c ular ly cl ose-in (under 100 kHz), as these
may also cause failur e to lock. Power level of the 10 MHz reference si gnal shoul d be +/-10 dBm.

SSPA
In the SSPA-only configuration, this is the RF input. It is a precision type-N connector, with performance
to 18GHz. No 10 MHz reference is required for SSPA-only operation.
Section 2.3
J2–MONITOR AND CONTROL INTERFACE
The serial interface is used to interface the unit t o a host computer. All on-board sensors are read t hrough
this interf ac e, including forward power monitoring. In default mute configuration (refer to section Pin D:
Shutdown (i.e. Mute Control)), use of this connection is opti onal.
PIN OUTS
The monitor and control interface is a ten pin connect or.
CAUTION: EXTREME CARE MUST BE USED WITH THIS CONNECTOR TO AVOID ELECTRO
STATIC DISCHARGE (E S D) . Many units have been damaged by improper E S D pr ec autions. Always use
industry-standard pr actices incl uding wrist straps when comi ng within six inches of these connectors or
any accessories or cables to be attached to this.
The connector is a cannon t y pe c onnec tor with a 12-10 configurati on with pins (Amphenol part number
71-533723-10P). T his connector is a MIL-C-26482 S eries 1 recept ac le, Shell size 12, 10 pins. The
connector i s a “rec eptacle” and it has pins (as opposed to socket s), and r equires the mating connector to
be a “plug” with ten socket s. A n ex am ple mating connector would be Amphenol #PT06A-12-10S. A range
of other plug-com patible Amphenol part numbers for the m ating connector may be used to add options to
the plug such as right - angle, stress relief clam p, m etal color /f inish, etc. Please contact the connector
manufacturer for more information and/or see Amphenol catalog 12-070.
The pin outs are given in Table 2-1 and shown in Figure 2 -1.

PIN D:SHUTDOWN (I.E.MUTE CONTROL)
This pin implem ents the shutdown, or mute function, and the user should apply Ground to this pin to mute
the amplifier. When muted, the unit power transistors are turned off, reducing power consumpt ion and
giving an RF output noise close to the thermal noise floor.
Pin D has an internal 50K-ohm r esi stor that can be configured as a pull-up to 4V, or as a pull down to
ground. Because of the c onfigurable pull-up / pull- down resistor , the unit can be configured t o be active
(i.e. not muted) when Pi n D is left open c ir c uited, therefore, no connecti on is necessary on pin D for the
amplifi er t o operate normally.
Pin D is also configurable to be either active high or active low. When configured as activ e high, any
voltage between 3.0 V and 5.0 V (relative to case ground) will m ute the output. When configured as
active low, any v oltage between 0.0 V and 0.8 V (relative to case ground) will mute the output.
The case ground may be connect ed at any location on the outer metal shell of the unit.
PIN G AND H:GND
Ground is connect ed to the amplifier housing. Thi s pi n is elect r ic ally connected to the outer aluminum
shell and thus to t he mounting screws used to hold down the unit. This is for small signal only; any highcurrent connections should use the external screws on the outside of the alumi num case.

MESSAGE DEFINITIONS
getident
This command returns the par t number, software revision and serial number of the unit.
Figure 2-3: Command getident
getstatus
908239
This command instruc ts the unit to respond with fault flag, forward power and temperature. Note: reverse
power, “revpwr”, in the response is a future enhancem ent and is not currently supported.
A “0” after “fault” indicates no faults. A “1” indicates a fault. Use command “getfaults” to
determine what f ault exists.
Power is in dBm.
Temperature is in degr ees C. The t em per ature scale is from –55 to 150 C, with approximately
+/- 2 degrees C accuracy.

getfaults
This command get s the status of the mute, over temperature and pll loss of loc k .
For mute, “0” indic ates the unit is in an unmuted state. A “1” indi c ates a muted state. Note that a “1”
does not necessarily indicate an error as the unit c ould hav e been c ommanded into a mute state (see
“setmute” command).
For over temp and pll, a v alue of “0” means no error and a v alue of “1” indicates an error.
Figure 2-5: Command getfaults
resetfaults
This command clear s faults under certain conditions. Note that the “mute” fault code indicates muted
state, not necessarily an error. Since the unit can be commanded into mute state, without a fault , the
“resetfaults” command will not clear a mute fault in this situation.
The temperat ur e sensor has a tri p point (above which a fault is triggered) and a r eset point (below which
a fault is autom atically cleared.) The reset point is set below the t rip point to provide hyster esi s. S ee
Table 2-2 for Trip and Reset Points.
The resetfaults command will clear an overtem p fault which has been t r ipped if the unit is currently below
the trip poi nt. If t he fault m ode sensor value is above the trip point, the f ault cannot be cleared. Some
faults may not have a reset poi nt, and must be reset through the “resetfaults” command.

J4–RF OUTPUT
The output is a standard WR75 or WR62 square waveguide. Specify which fl ange is to be installed at
time of order. Both types of fl anges have a groove for an O-ring seal, whic h is hi ghly r ecommended to
keep moisture out of t he unit.
Also, for outdoor installations, after bolting the waveguide-to-waveguide connection, it is recommended to
add RTV silicone compound as a sealant ar ound the entire perim eter of the joint where the flanges meet .
This will prov ide extr a pr otection against water ingr ess at the flange-to-fl ange interface.
The unit is supplied wit h two screw lengths (four 6-32x3/8" and four 6-32x7/16"); it is the users
responsibility to ensure that the appropriate length of screw is used. Ther e shoul d be at least 4 t hr eads of
engagement (0.125") with the holes in the waveguide flange.
Section 2.7
GROUND CONNECTION
The unit is supplied wit h a 10- 32 screw and i nternal tooth lock washers for grounding purposes. It is
highly recomm ended that the unit is grounded accordi ng to nati onal and local electric al c odes before use.
The unit is entir ely watertight and suitable for outdoor operation. All joint s are O-ring sealed. The
waveguide port J 4 is not internally sealed, so the antenna feed must be seal ed with a radome or window,
and all waveguide joints should be O-ring sealed if water-tightness is requir ed. Please leave at least 1
inch of clearance around the fan air intake. Unit m ay be mounted upside- down or in any orientation.
