ALM-133/275/PNM SERIES
Version 1.1 June, 2008

Congratulations! You have purchased a vacuum positioning device from Nor-Cal Products. This unit is capable of many years of use with minimal
care and maintenance. This manual is a tool to aid you in obtaining this service. We at Nor-Cal Products encourage your comments and suggestions on this
manual.
Product Description
The ALM-133/275/PNM Series Linear Feedthroughs are pneumatically operated linear positioning devices.
These units are available with a 1.33 or 2.75" OD mounting flanges and stroke lengths up to 10", depending upon application.
Custom units with multiple position stops have been constructed.
Custom shaft lengths and custom shaft modifications are available.
Typical performance: These units can provide fast shutter operation. Typical operation times are <80 msec from coil energize (with the optional ACV-24 air
control valve) to finish of 4" travel of a ALM-133-4/PNM with ACV-24 and shutter.
Unpacking
ALM-133/275/PNM Feedthroughs are shipped double bagged in polyethylene film and cushioned in custom foam-in-place packing if not mounted to a
manipulator or translator. We have found this the only system to provide adequate protection for shipment. The foam is separated approximately half way
inside the box with thin blue plastic. We strongly recommend the packing box with packing be saved for possible future shipment or equipment storage.
Installation
The Feedthrough can be installed directly from the crate. As usual, care should be exercised to protect the knife seal edge. The standard
unit mounts to a 1.33” OD flange. (other flanges are available as required). Proper tightening technique should be observed whenever
tightening a metal sealed flange. We recommend a small quantity of high temperature anti-seize lubricant be used on all mounting bolts.
This is especially important if the unit will be subject to bakeouts.
Supply up to 80 psi dry air pressure to the ACV-24 “inlet” port if fitted. If the customer is supplying the air “logic”, connect the two air
lines to the two 1/8” NPT ports on the cylinder.
Adjustments
Your Feedthrough is correctly adjusted prior to shipment. This section is included to aid the user in making changes in these settings if he
so desires.
Air Pressure:
The ALM-133/PNM Feedthrough is rated for use at 80 psi (dry) air pressure. We recommend this not be operated at higher pressures. Such
operation will cause accelerated wear and pre-mature failure. All performance specifications area established at 80 psi. Lower pressures
will cause slower operation, but extend the normal operation life.
Air Control Valve: (optional, when fitted)
The ACV-24 valve is supplied with individual direction flow control valves. Adjustment is accomplished by turning the adjustment screw
adjacent to the corresponding cylinder port on the valve. These flow control valves fully open will provide the fastest operation. Closed
down, slower, gentler operation is obtained. To maximize life, we recommend not operating this unit faster than your application requires.
Lubrication
The in-vacuum linear bearing is Tungsten Di-sulfide dry film lubricated for vacuum service. Normally, additional lubrication is not required,
especially if the unit is not exposed to side loads. Additional Tungsten Di-sulfide can be added if this bearing operation becomes rough.
The air cylinder is pre lubricated and sealed for extensive maintenance free life. Air line oil mist lubrication or occasional direct oiling of
the internal working components will extend the cylinder life.

Bakeout procedure
The standard ALM-133/PNM feedthrough must be dis-assembled for bakeout.
Dis-assembly Procedure:
Actuate cylinder to the “out” position.
Insert two 1/8” OD by approximately 1” long pins through the two lock pin holes into the holes in the traveling head assembly.
Disconnect supply air and power to the control valve.
Remove three flat head screws (A) and gently pull back on the cylinder assembly, allowing the cylinder shaft to extend, while not
allowing the lock pins to be dislodged. Continue to support the cylinder assembly through the rest of the dis-assembly
procedure.
With an open end wrench, loosen the lock nut on the end of the cylinder shaft.
By hand, unthread cylinder shaft from traveling head assembly and remove the cylinder assembly.
Proceed with bakeout with lock pins in place.
Automatic temperature control with the sensor (s) correctly located in the top of the area being heated is highly recommended.
Re-assembly is the reverse of the removal procedure.
We recommend a maximum bakeout temperature of 200 degrees C.
