Note: Players with their own Game Cards can play via Local Play .
Players without Game Cards can participate via Download Play .
CREATING A ROOM
ONE PLAYER WITH A GAME CARD
Select Local Multiplayer and then Create Room.
Once all of the players' names appear in the list, tap Start and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
JOINING A ROOM
PLAYERS WITH THEIR OWN GAME CARDS
Select Local Multiplayer and then tap the group you want to join, following the on-screen instructions to proceed.
PLAYERS WITHOUT THEIR OWN GAME CARDS
Select Download Play ( ) at the HOME Menu, and then tap Open to launch it.
Tap the Nintendo 3DS logo, and then select Mario Tennis Open. (A player with the Game Card must create a room before Mario Tennis Open will be shown in the list.)
Wait for the game to start.
Note: The selection of characters and courts will be limited if any players do not have their own Game Card.
ONLINE PLAYONLINE PLAY
You can connect via the Internet to play with players online.
EXHIBITION
You can play Exhibition matches with up to three friends from your friend list. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a room, assemble or join a group, and begin playing.
You can register friends by accessing your friend list ( ) from the HOME Menu. Please see the Nintendo 3DS Operations Manual for more information about friend lists.
OPEN MATCH
Take on players from across the region in singles play, and see how you stack up by comparing your rating with other players. Follow the on-screen instructions to play.
Your rating is an evaluation of your skill as a player. All players begin with a rating of 2000. If you win matches, your rating will go up. If you lose matches, it will fall.

STREETPASS MATCH
You can earn coins by playing the two types of StreetPass games. Those coins can be spent at the item shop to purchase new outfits for your Mii character.
ACTIVATING STREETPASS
When you play the game for the first time, you will be asked if you want to activate StreetPass. Please follow the on-screen instructions to activate it if desired. After you meet someone via StreetPass, you will see an indicator ( ) in the file-selection screen. You can change the setting at any time by selecting StreetPass Setting from the StreetPass menu and choosing Activate or Deactivate.
