INSTALLATION
If you are installing the MS110 into an existing wall,
take time to consider any possible obstructions
which may be hidden inside the wall, such as wood
or metal studs; electrical, telephone or other types
of wiring; plumbing; AC or heating conduits; old
wall safes; etc.
1. Determine a mounting location for the MS110.
Select a location where you will have access
to the rear of the MS110 after it is installed.
This will allow you to securely tighten the
MS110 to the mounting surface using the
supplied hardware.
2. Drill a 1/2” hole where the MS110 will be
mounted.
3. Run the MS110’s IR cable. Label the cable for
future reference. The MS110 is supplied with
10’ of pre-stripped IR cable. The IR cable may
be shortened or lengthened as needed. If you
want to make the MS110’s cable shorter, use a
pair of wire cutters to cut the cable to the
desired length. The IR cable may be lengthened
by splicing it to a recommended IR cable (See
Installation Considerations—Type of Cable). You
may splice the MS110 cable to another cable by
soldering or crimping the connections.
4. Connect the MS110 cable to the main system
unit. Strip 1/4” of insulation from the end of
each wire. Tightly twist the end of each wire
until there are no frayed ends. Insert the end of
9
10
each wire into the appropriate hole on the main
system units’ screwless connector (Figure 2),
and snap the locking tab down. To help you, the
connector plug is keyed. Insert the smooth side
of the connector plug into the smooth side of
the socket. Don’t force the scalloped side of the
connector plug into the smooth side of the socket.
6. Secure the MS110 by tightening the hex nut.
DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.
Tools Required
• 1/8” Standard Slotted Screwdriver
• Adjustable wrench or pliers
• Wire Stripper
NOTE: Do not install th e MS110 next to a light
dimmer
OPERATION
Operation of the MS110 is straightforward. Simply
aim your hand-held remote at the MS110. Your
IR command is instantly repeated to your A/V
equipment.
TROUBLESHOOTING
This manual contains in structions f or the
MS110 only. For specific inf ormation on the
adjustment and operati on of your N iles infrare d
extender sy stem, please r efer to the instruction
manual inclu ded with you r Niles IR m ain system
unit (MSU14 0, MSU250, MSU4 80 MSU440Z,
IntelliCont rol).
1. Test t he remote co ntrol(s) by operating th e
A/V equi pment direct ly. Replace the batteries
if nee ded.
2. Dou ble check th e cable conn ections on t he
MS110 and on the m ain system u nit. Look for
open, sh orted or rev ersed wires.
3. Test f or interfere nce from the following
source s:
• Neon or halogen l ights in the room
• Light dimmers, begi nning with t hose closest
to t he MS110
Observe th e main syste m unit IR co nfirmation
LED while p erforming al l the tests. I t is possibl e
to have in terference f rom more tha n one source .
Eliminating Optical Feed back
In some ins tallations, t wo condition s combine to
create an optical feed back loop. Sym ptoms can
include: poor range, interm ittent opera tion or no
operation.
The conditi ons which so metimes comb ine to
create a f eedback loop are:
1. Bot h a sensor a nd a flasher are locate d within
the sa me room.
2. The re is some l ow-level no ise or inter ference
on you r system.
You can elimina te optical feedback by replacing
any IRB1 “fl ooding flash er” with MF1 o r MF2
MicroFlashe rs® and coveri ng all flash ers with
the supplie d IR blockin g covers.
EMI (Electr omagnetic In terference)
Identify th e source of the interfer ence. The most
common sour ces of elect romagnetic interference
are listed in the Insta llation Con siderations
section. To elimin ate EMI try the follow ing
methods:
1. Mov e the sensor or the sens or cable aw ay
from th e EMI source or move the source of
the EMI away from the sensor o r the cable.
2. Con nect the Sen sor’s GND term inal to true
earth ground (if t his isn’t fe asible use t he
main s ystem unit’s GN D terminal).
There are m any methods for reducin g
interferenc e. Which soluti on is best f or you
depends on your situat ion. If you re quire furthe r
assistance call Niles Techni cal Support at
