Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a small piece of plastic located in the SIM card holder in the back of your phone, underneath the battery.

Your phone comes with a St andard Lithium Ion Battery.

Lithium Ion batteries have a self discharge rate and without use, lose about 1% of their charge per day.
The battery capacity is degraded if the battery is stored for long periods while fully charged. If long term storage is required, store at half capacity.

SIM Card Security
To pre ve nt unauth or i ze d us e of yo ur ph on e, your SIM card is protec ted by a PIN that you enter each time the phone is powered on. You can change the PIN or turn off the requirement that it be entered.

Making Calls
Your i860 phone makes two types of calls: digital cellular phone calls and Direct Connect calls. With Direct Connect calls, yo u use your phone as a long -range, digital walkie-tal kie.

Receiving Calls
To make a Direct Connect call: 1 If the flip is open, enter the Direct Connect
number you want to call. -or- If the flip is closed, choose the number as you
would when making a phone call.
2 Press and hold the P TT button on the side of
you r phone. Begin ta lkin g after your phon e emit s a chirping sound.
3 Release the PTT button to listen.
When you place a Direct Co nnect c all, you must enter the whole Direct Connect number includ ing the asterisks .

Contacts it is good practice to include th e whole Direct Connect number including the asterisks in case you travel with your phon e, or another Direct Connect us er whom you are trying to re ach travels wit h their phone, outside of your local market.

Using Mute
Muting calls lets you listen to incoming sound without transmitting sound. Mute is available whenever you are on an active call.

When you make an emergency call, your phone’s GPS Enabled feature can help emergency service personnel find you , if you are in a location where your ph on e' s GPS a nten na ha s est abl is he d a cl ear view of the open sky and your local emergency response center has the equipment to pr ocess location information. See “GPS Enabled” on page 119, and particularly “IMPORTANT: Things to Keep in Mind” on page 119 and “Making an Emergency Call” on page 120, for more inform at io n on the limita ti on s of this fea tu re.
Important: If you are bringing your phone number
to Nextel from your previous carrier, you may receive a temporary telephone number while your Nextel phone is being programmed with your permanent phone number. If you make a call to 911 and the call fails, the 911 emergency response center will not be able to call you back on your Nextel phone if in the meantime, your Nextel phone has been programmed with your

Call Alerts
Sen din g a call alert let s the r ec ip ie nt kn ow you want to talk to him or her on a Direct Connect call.
When you send a call alert, the recipient’s phone emits a series of beeps, or vibrates, and displays your name or Direct Connect number.
The recipient can:

The recent calls list displays information associated with calls you have made and r eceive d and call alerts you have received. It also displays My In fo an d co ntact info r m at io n sent to you fr om other phones.

Calls and Call Alerts
The Direct Connect number Contacts type icon appears when you receive a Direct C onnect call or call alert, even if th e number is not stored in Contacts.
Call alerts you have received appear as Direct Connect calls. Like all items in the recent calls list, they remain listed until you delete them or until the y rea ch the end of the lis t.

If you scroll to My Info from another phone,
you can make a call to the Direct Connect numbe r of the phone that sent t he information.
If you scroll t o contact informati on from
another phone, you can make a call to any of the numbers in the contact information.

Entering Te xt
You can enter text, numbers, an d symbols into your phone using Alpha, Word, N umeric, or Symbol text input modes.

In Word mode, T9 Text Input analyzes the letters on the ke ypa d but t on yo u pr es s and ar ra ng es them to create words. As you type, T9 Text Input matches your keystrokes to words in its database and displays the most commonly u s ed matching word. You can add you own words to this database.

Contacts stores up to 600 numbers or addresses. Each Contacts entry can store s everal numbers or addresses.
Information stored in Contacts is saved on your SIM card.

A Speed Dial number — When you store a phone number, it is assigned a Speed Dial number. You ca n accept the default S peed Dial number or change it.

Setting the Clean-up Option
The clean-up option controls how long messages remain in the Inbox and Sent Items before they are deleted. You set the clean-up option for the Inbox and Sent Items separ ately.
The clean-up option deletes only rea d, unlocked messages.

the same memory space used to store Java applications data, items accessible throu gh the medi a ce nter, and voice recor ds created when your phone is in a cal l. Delet ing some of these other items frees memory for messages.

To delete all read, un locked messages from the Inbox, all messages in D rafts, or all successfully
