Driving Safety Tips
Safety is the most important call you will ever make.
NOTE: For safety and legal reasons (in many countries), do not use
your phone while driving.
1. Get to know your wireless phone and its features such as speed dial
and redial. Carefully read your instruction manual and l earn to take
advantage of valuable features most phones offer, including automatic
redial and memory. Also, work to memorize the phone keypad so you can
use the speed dial function without taking your attention off the road.
2. When available, use a hands free device. A number of hands free
wireless phone accessories are readily available today. Whether you
choose an installed mounted device fo r your wireless phone or a speaker
phone accessory, take advantage of these devices if available to you.
3. Position your wireless phone within easy reach. Make sure you place
your wireless phone within easy reach and where you can grab it without
taking your eyes from the road. If you get an incoming call at an
inconvenient time, if possible, let your voice mail answer it for you.
4. Suspend conversations during hazardous driving conditions or situations. Let the person you are speaking with know you are driving; if
necessary, suspend the call in heavy traffic or hazardous weather
conditions. Rain, sleet, snow and i ce can be hazardous, but so is heavy
traffic. As a driver, your first responsibility is to pay attenti on to the road.
5. Do not take notes or look up phone num be rs wh ile drivi ng. If you are
reading an address book or business card, or writing a “to do” list while
driving a car, you are not watching where you are going. It's common
sense. Don't get caught in a danger ous situation because you are reading
or writing and not pa ying attention to the road or nearby vehicles.
6. Dial sensibly and assess the traffic. If possible, place calls when you are
not moving or before pulling into traffic. Try to plan your calls before
you begin your trip or attempt to coincide your calls with times you may
be stopped at a stop sign, red light or otherwise st ationary. But if you
3
need to dial while driving, follow this simple tip — dial only a few
numbers, check the road and your mirrors, then continue.
7. Do not engage in stressful or emotional conversations th at may be distracting. Stressful or emotional conversations and driving do not mix
— they are distracting and even dangerous when you are behind the
wheel of a car. Make people you are talking with aware you are d rivi ng
and if necessary, suspend conversations which have the potential to divert
your attention from the road.
8. Use your wireless phone to call for help. Your wireless phone is one of
the greatest tools you can own to protect yourself and your family in
dangerous situations — with your phone at your si de, help is only three
numbers away. Dial 9-1-1 or other local emergency number in the case of
fire, traffic accident, road hazard or medical emergency. Remember, it is
a free call on your wireless phone.
9. Use your wireless phone to help others in emergencies. Your wireless
phone provides you a perfect opportunity to be a “Good Samaritan” in
your community. If you see an auto accident, crime in progress or other
serious emergency where lives are in danger, call 9-1-1 or other local
emergency number, as you would want others to do for you.
10. Call roadside assistance or a special wireless non-emergency assistance
number when necessary. Certain situations you encounter while driving
may require attention but are not urgent enough to merit a call for
emergency services. But you still can use your wireless phone to lend a
hand. If you see a broken-down vehicle posing no serious hazard, a broken
traffic signal, a minor traffic accident where no one appears injured or a
vehicle you know to be stolen, call r o a ds id e a s s is t an c e or other special nonemergency wireless numbers.
11. Use your phone’s Internet capabilities before you
drive. Wireless Internet services are not designed to be
used while driving.

Phone Based
Pause Digit Entry
When storing a number, you c an program you r phone so that it will not on ly dial
a number but also pause and enter another series of numbers such as a personal
PIN or password. This feature is particularly useful for automated services such
as voice mail and banking systems.
Example: Let’s say you have a company voice mail account that you frequently
check while traveling. And, to access that account you must do the following:
•Dial your work num ber ;
•Press
•Enter your PIN to access your messages.
You can program your i2000plus phone to enter all of the above information for
you. All you have to do is sepa rate each entry with a pause. If you were to
program your phone to automatically input the above information, the stored
data would look like t his 17035551234P #P1234. In this example, the first
eleven digits represent the number that must be dialed to access your voice mail.
The P represents a 3 second pause. The # interrupts your greeting. The second P
represents ano the r 3 sec on d pa us e . The las t fou r digits represent your personal
PIN.
You can use this feature not only to enter PINs and passwords but also to have
the phone automatical ly select menu options (i.e., press 1 to hear messages).
To create a three-second pause follow the s te ps below.
# while the voice mail greeting is being played; and
Press and hold * for two seconds. The pause symbol (P) will appear.
NOTE: You can enter up to 20 numbers/characters in a single entry,
stored or dialed.
NOTE: If you use a system that will not let you enter an option until the
automated message has played in its entirety, you can program
your phone to pause for more than 3 seconds. For example,
performing the above step twice will program two pauses and
cause your phone to wait 6 seconds before entering the next
set of numbers.

Setting the Way Your Phone Searches for
Networks
You may want to c o nfigure the phone to search for a specific network or en a ble
it to select the best network.
NOTE: Your phone is already programmed with the “Last Active” set-
ting. This is the recommended setting, which reduces network
registration time.
If you wish to change the setting, the i2000plus phone enables you to select the
option that’s right for you. And, you have si x options to choose from :
•Last Active—This is the phone’s default setting. It enables the phone to
switch between iDEN and GSM systems that do not overlap. (For example,
you send/receive calls on an iDEN network while in New York. Then you
travel to Paris. Your phone will first search for an iDEN network. If it
cannot locate one, it will automatically search for a GSM network.)
•Roam—This option is useful when you are in an overlapping systemcoverage area and have no preference for either the iDEN or the GSM
network. Your i2000plus phone will switch between iDEN an d GSM until
it finds an acceptable network.
•iDEN Preferred—This option is useful if your home system is iDEN and
you travel to a country or regio n where GSM coverage is also available.
Your i2000plus phone always searches first for iDEN networks. If an iDEN
network is not found, your phone will the n search for a GSM network.
63
•iDEN Only—This option is useful when you are in an area that is covered
by iDEN and GSM networks, but you want to use iDEN. Your i2000plus
phone attempts to register only on iDEN networks.
•GSM Preferred—This option is useful if your home system is GSM and
you travel to a country or region where iDEN is also available. Your phone
will always search for GSM networks first. If a GSM network is n ot found,
your phone will then search for an iDEN network.
•GSM Only—This option is useful when yo u are in an area that is cover e d
by iDEN and GSM, but you want to use GSM. Your i2000plus phone
attempts to register only on GSM networks.
NOTE: Nextel and other networks in North and Latin America are gen-
erally supported by iDEN. Networks in other areas of the world
are generally GSM networks. Be aware that some features that
are supported by iDEN networks are not supported when you
connect to a GSM network.

Using T9® Text Input
As you compose e mail or ente r stre et an d Web ad dres se s on you r Next el pho ne,
you will need to type words, numbers and symbols. Your Nextel data-capable
phone has embedded software, called T9 Text Input, that makes typing on a
phone keypad much like typing on a computer keybo ard: it eliminates the
traditional “multi-tap” m ethod of text entry. As y ou type, you press o nly one ke y
per letter. T9 Text Input matches your keystrokes to words in its linguistic
database of appr oximately 60,000 words and proper names. You may also stor e
additional words you frequently use in your own User Database, which is
incorporated into the T9 database.
Entering Characters, Numbers and Sy mbo ls
In applications that require text input, such as Hotmail, Two-Way Messaging,
Address Book, and Search, th ere are four text entry modes available: Word,
Alpha, Number, and Symb ol.
WORD or word—activates single-key-press T9 Text Input.
ALPHA or alp ha—activates sta ndard keypad text entry call ed
“multi-tap”.
NUM—allows entry of keypad numbers.
SYM—allows entry of punctuation symbols such as “@” or “?”.
The menu option in the lower right corner of the phone screen indicates your
current text entry mode. If the option is “word,” you are in T9 Text Input mode.
To change text entry modes, press the right o until you see the desired text
entry mode.
T9 Navigation Keys
Your phone keys assume different functions while in T9 Text Input mode just as
they did when in Net mode. The following keys will be instrumental while using
T9:
Backspace/Erase: Press once to backspace or to erase a single
character. Press and hold to erase the entire message.
Space: Press once to accept a word and insert a space when entering
text.
Next: Press 0 to display more words that match the keystroke sequence you
entered. Words that you have added to your User Database will begin appearing
after words stored in the T9 Database.

reflect the desired case. For example, when entering lowercase text, the text
entry mode will appear as “word” or “alpha.” When entering uppercase text, the
text entry mode will appear as “WORD” or “ALPHA.”
NOTE: The default for “word” and “alpha” mode is uppercase at the
beginning of a sentence, lowercase elsewhere.
Punctuation: Press 1 to automatically insert one of eight basic punctuation
symbols. Press 0 to display alternate punctuation choices. Press to
accept the punctuation and continue typing. Additional punctuation and
