Based on Nes t’s online compatibility ch ecker data, the Nest
Thermost at works with most 24V systems , including gas,
electric, o il, forced air, variable speed, heat p ump and radiant.
It can control:
• Heating: one, t wo and three stages ( W1, W2, W3)
• Cooling: on e and two stages (Y1, Y2)
• Heat pump: with aux iliary and emergency he at (O/B, AUX, E)
• Fan (G)
• Power (C, Rh, Rc)
• Humidifier or dehumidi fier (HUM, DEHUM)
The Nest The rmostat’s * connect or can accept only one
of these wires: W3, E, HU M or DEHUM.
The Nest The rmostat is designed to wo rk even if your home
doesn’t have a co mmon C wire. Rarely, installing a new C wire
may be required.
Professional installation recommended for:
• Dual fuel sy stems (heat pump with furnac e)
• Whole-home humi difiers and dehumidifiers

5. Label wires
Peel off th e blue labels and atta ch them to
your wires. Use th e white labels if you have a
E, W3, HUM or DEHUM wire. You can conne ct
only one of these w ires to the * connector.

1. Switch off power
This protec ts you and avoids blowing a fuse
in your equipment. A djust the temperature
on your old thermo stat to make sure your
system is of f.
2. Remove cover
Some cover s pop off, while others need
to be unscrewe d.
CAUTION: Do not connect Nest to
high voltage wires.
Remember, the power to your
HVAC system must b e off to avoid
blowing a fuse in your e quipment.
4. Remove any jumper wires
Jumper wires are s hort wires betwee n two
connecto rs. You won’t ne ed them. An R wire
can go into eithe r Rc or Rh.
3. Check your system
If your old thermo stat is labeled 120V or 240V
or has thick wires w ith wire nuts, your system
is high voltage. No t sure? Contact suppor t.

Use the bubble leve l to make sure the
Nest Thermostat is level.

Use trim plate if needed
You can cover up holes or mar ks left by your
old thermos tat with the optional trim pl ate.
Snap the base and t rim plate together,
then screw them to the wall.
You’ll find the trim plate in the bo ttom
of the box.
Mounting on an electrical box
Electrical b oxes aren’t common, but if you
have one, secure t he steel plate to the
electric al box with two of the short s teel
plate screws . Insert the screws into th e long
slots on the steel plate.
Use the other t wo short screws to at tach the
Nest base and t rim plate to the steel pla te.

9. Connect wires
After all th e wires are connected, make sur e
they’re flush with t he wall.

Press the displ ay until it clicks into place.

The disclaimers, exclusions, and limitations of liability under
this Limit ed Warrant y will not apply t o the exten t prohibite d by
applicab le law. For a full de scriptio n of your legal rig hts you shou ld
refer to th e laws applic able in your juri sdiction an d you may wish to
contac t a relevant c onsumer adv isory ser vice.
1. WHAT THIS LIMITED WA RRANT Y COVERS; PER IOD OF COVER AGE
Nest Lab s, Inc. (“Nest L abs”), 900 H ansen Way, Palo Alt o, Califor nia
USA, warr ants to the ow ner of the encl osed produ ct that the
product c ontained i n this box (“Pro duct”) wil l be free fro m defects in
material s and workma nship for a per iod of two (2) ye ars [one (1) year
for Facto ry Refurb ished Produ cts] from th e date of deliv ery follo wing
the origin al retail pur chase (the “ Warranty P eriod”). If th e Product
fails to co nform to this L imited Warr anty durin g the Warrant y Period,
Nest Lab s will, at its s ole discret ion, either (a ) repair or rep lace any
defect ive Produc t or compone nt; or (b) accep t the return o f the
Product a nd refund th e money actu ally paid by the o riginal purc haser
for the Pro duct. Repa ir or replac ement may be ma de with a new or
refurbi shed produc t or compon ents, at Nes t Labs’ sole d iscretion .
If the Produ ct or a compo nent incorp orated wi thin it is no long er
available , Nest Labs m ay replace t he Product w ith a similar pr oduct
of similar f unction, at N est Labs’ s ole discret ion. This is you r sole and
exclusive r emedy for b reach of this L imited Warr anty. Any Pro duct
that has ei ther been re paired or rep laced unde r this Limite d Warranty
will be cove red by the ter ms of this Limit ed Warrant y for the long er of
ninety (9 0) days from th e date of deliv ery or the re maining Warr anty
Period. T his Limited War ranty is tr ansfera ble from the or iginal
purchas er to subsequ ent owners , but the Warran ty Perio d will not be
extend ed in duration o r expanded i n coverage f or any such tra nsfer.
2. TOTAL SATISFAC TION RETUR N POLICY
If you are the o riginal purc haser of the P roduct and y ou are not
satisfie d with this Pro duct for any re ason, you may r eturn it in it s
original c ondition wi thin thirt y (30) days of the or iginal purch ase and
receive a f ull refund.

of the Prod uct must (a) no tify Nest L abs of the int ention to cl aim by

Nest Lab s’ return ship ping instru ctions, and (c) s hip the Produc t at

owner’s cost (except where prohibited by applicable law) to Nest
Labs for repair or replacement. Nest Labs will have no warranty
obligations with respect to a returned Product if it determines, in its
reasonable discretion after examination of the returned Product,
that the Product is an Ineligible Product (defined below). Nest Labs
will bear all costs of return shipping to owner, except with respect to
any Ineligible Product, for which owner will bear all shipping costs.
4. WHAT THIS LIMITED WARR ANTY DOES NOT COVER
This warranty does not cover the following (collectively “Ineligible
Products”): Products marked as “sample” or sold “AS IS”; or
Products that have been subject to: (a) modifications, alterations,
tampering, or improper maintenance or repairs; (b) handling,
storage, installation, testing, or use not in accordance with the
Installation Guide or other instructions provided by Nest Labs;
(c) abuse or misuse of the Product; (d) breakdowns, fluctuations,
or interruptions in electric power or the telecommunications
network; or (e) Acts of God, including lightning, fire, flood, tornado,
earthquake, or hurricane. This warranty does not cover consumable
parts, including batteries, unless damage is due to defects in
materials or workmanship of the Product, or software (even if
packaged or sold with the product). Nest Labs recommends that
you use only authorized service providers for maintenance or
repair. Unauthorized use of the Product or software can impair the
Product’s performance and may invalidate this Limited Warranty.
Nest Labs does not warrant that operation of the Product will be
error-free or uninterrupted or that the Product will in every case
process all data correctly.
5. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES
EXCEPT AS STATED ABOVE IN THIS LIMITED WARRANT Y, AND TO THE
MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE L AW, NEST LABS
DISCL AIMS ALL EXPRESS, IMPLIED, AND STATUTORY WARR ANTIES
AND CONDITIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT, INCLUDING
THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILIT Y, FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. TP THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY
APPLICABLE LAW, NEST LABS ALSO LIMITS THE DURATION OF ANY
IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS TO THE DURATION OF THIS
LIMITED WARRANTY.
6. LIMITATION OF DAMAGES
IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE WARR ANTY DISCLAIMERS, IN NO EVENT
WILL NEST LABS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL,
EXEMPLARY, OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY DAMAGES
FOR LOST DATA OR LOST PROFITS, ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO
THIS LIMITED WARRANTY OR THE PRODUCT, AND NEST LABS’ TOTAL
CUMUL ATIVE LIABILIT Y ARISING FROM OR REL ATED TO THIS LIMITED
WARRANT Y OR THE PRODUCT WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT
ACTUALLY PAID FOR THE PRODUCT BY THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER.
7. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
NEST LABS DISCL AIMS ALL LIABILITY OF ANY KIND OF NEST L ABS’
SUPPLIERS. THE NEST LABS ONLINE SERVICES (“SERVICES”)
PROVIDE YOU INFORMATION (“PRODUCT INFORMATION”)
REGARDING YOUR ENERGY USE AND YOUR HVAC EQUIPMENT OR
OTHER PERIPHERALS CONNECTED TO YOUR PRODUCT (“PRODUCT
PERIPHERALS”). THE TYPE OF PRODUCT PERIPHERALS THAT MAY
BE CONNECTED TO YOUR PRODUCT MAY CHANGE FROM TIME TO
TIME. THE SERVICES MAY BE USED TO CONTROL YOUR HEATING,
VENTILATION, AND AC SYSTEM OR PRODUCT PERIPHERALS VIA
THE PRODUCT. WITHOUT LIMITING THE GENERALITY OF THE
DISCLAIMERS ABOVE, ALL PRODUCT INFORMATION IS PROVIDED
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, “AS IS”, AND “AS AVAILABLE”. NEST LABS
DOES NOT REPRESENT, WARRANT, OR GUAR ANTEE THAT PRODUCT
INFORMATION WILL BE AVAILABLE, ACCURATE, OR RELIABLE
OR THAT PRODUCT INFORMATION OR USE OF THE SERVICES OR
PRODUCT WILL DECREASE THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF YOUR
HOME. YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ENERGY BILLS
INCURRED BY YOUR HOME. YOU USE ALL PRODUCT INFORMATION,
THE SERVICES, AND THE PRODUCT AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION
AND RISK. YOU WILL BE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR (AND NEST
LABS DISCLAIMS) ANY AND ALL LOSS, LIABILIT Y, OR DAMAGES,
INCLUDING TO YOUR HVAC SYSTEM, PLUMBING, HOME, PRODUCT,
PRODUCT PERIPHERALS, COMPUTER, MOBILE DEVICE, AND ALL
OTHER ITEMS AND PETS IN YOUR HOME, RESULTING FROM YOUR
USE OF THE PRODUCT INFORMATION, SERVICES, OR PRODUCT.
PRODUCT INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE SERVICES IS NOT
INTENDED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR DIRECT MEANS OF OBTAINING
THE INFORMATION. FOR EX AMPLE, A TEMPERATURE READING IN
THE PRODUCT INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE SERVICES IS NOT
INTENDED AS A SUBSITUTE FOR READING THE TEMPERATURE AS
DIRECTLY DISPLAYED BY THE PRODUCT.
8. VARIATIONS THAT MIGHT APPLY TO THIS LIMITED WARRANTY
Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on how long an
implied warranty lasts or exclusions/limitations on incidental or
consequential damages, so some of the limitations set out above
may not apply to you.
