Introduction
The Cirrus LT is a zero client notebook that allows you to securely connect to any kind of
network, remote host, or virtual machine. The Cirrus LT has no local storage, so there is no
vulnerability to viruses or malware, and no files or information will be compromised if the
notebook is lost or stolen.
The Cirrus LT is based on Teradici’s high performance TERA2321 processor, which uses
the PCoIP protocol. PCoIP compresses, encrypts, and encodes the entire computing experience at the data center and transmits it as pixels across the IP network to a zero client.
Remote users have effortless access to a fully functional, even HD, computing experience-and now secure computing functionality is available for the first time on a zero client
laptop.
Compact, lightweight, and engineered for high performance, Cirrus LT using PCoIP technology is optimized for VMWare Horizon View for a highly efficient IT administrative experience and low cost of ownership. Cirrus LT supports copper, fiber, and WiFi. It delivers
state of the security using AES 128/256 bit encryption/decryption and Suite B ciphers.
The Cirrus LT breaks the last security barrier and sets a new performance standard for
computing practicality.
Since the Firmware may be updated at a later date, screenshots contained in this document of the NCS GUI may be subject to changes without notice.
*This port is labeled “Local” on the notebook, but it functions as a USB
charging port for certain devices. Devices plugged into this port will not
be seen in the remote session.

Chapter 3: Making
connections
This chapter will guide you on installing peripheral devices to maximize the use of your
notebook. It covers the following sections:
• Connecting External Display Devices
• Connecting USB Devices
• Connecting Headphones
• Connecting External Microphone
Connecting external display devices
You can connect your notebook to other display devices, such as a projector or
another display monitor. Your notebook is equipped with a mini DisplayPort which
provides digital video signals.
The DisplayPort cable is not included in the package. It is sold separately
or it may come with your external display device.
The Cirrus LT is designed to support both passive and active mini DP to
DVI adapters. The Cirrus LT is compatible with most new adapters but
there are a few older adapters that will not work. NCS sells a variety of
adapters for most modern LCDs out in the market today, i.e. Mini DP to
DP, Mini DP to DVI, Mini DP to VGA, etc. You may purchase these mini
DP adapters from NCS to ensure complete compatibility for your Cirrus
LT. Additionally, due to the nature of converting mini DP to VGA, all of
these adapters are considered active adapters.
Connecting a projector or display monitor
1. Connect one end of a DisplayPort cable to the mini DisplayPort of your
notebook.
2. Connect the other end to a projector or display monitor.
Cirrus LT User Manual v2.3 - Chapter 3
23
Page 24
Connecting to USB devices
You can connect your notebook to other USB devices, such as a mouse, keyboard,
digital camera, printer, or an external hard disk drive. Connect one end of a USB cable to the USB port of your notebook, then connect the other end to the USB device.
The USB cable is not included in the package. It is sold separately or it
may come with your USB device.
USB devices (including, but not limited to, printers, optical drives, and
hard drives) that do not have their own power sources are not officially
supported. Most of these devices tend to draw too much power from the
USB port. You can still connect these devices to the Cirrus LT. If the
device only has one USB port, use one of the two PCoIP USB ports on the
left side of the notebook. If the device has two USB ports (one for enumeration and one for auxiliary power), use one PCoIP USB port for the
enumeration plug and the charging USB port (also located on the left
side of the notebook) for the auxiliary power plug. Refer to the image
below. As a reminder, these USB devices that are plugged in may need
drivers to be loaded on the remote session.

Connecting headphones
Headphones/
headset port
The headphones/headset port is located on the right side of the notebook.
You can connect either headphones or external speakers to the Cirrus LT Notebook
via its headphones/headset port (see above). This headphone/headset port also
supports combo headsets (headphone/mic) which come with a single plug (for example, on the iPhone® headphone), as well as CTIA and OMTP Headsets.
Headsets are not compatible with the headphone port on the docking
station or with the microphone jacks on the notebook or the docking
station.
Audio subsystem
By default, audio will be output to the Cirrus LT’s built-in speakers when the
headphones/headset port is not used. If a webcam is installed, the webcam microphone can be used for applications like Skype.
When a headset (e.g. an Apple® headset) is plugged in, audio will be output to
this headset. Also, the headset microphone will get priority if a dedicated microphone is also connected to the Cirrus LT microphone jack.
Cirrus LT User Manual v2.3 - Chapter 3
25
Page 26
Connecting an external microphone
You can connect your notebook to an external microphone by plugging the audio
jack of the microphone to the microphone jack of your notebook.
If you want to use the docking station microphone jack while on a virtual
machine, you must install a driver. You can download this driver at
http://www.ncst.com/content/downloads-0.
If you have a USB headphone and microphone device, plug these into the
PCoIP USB ports.
External webcam support
This section applies to only EXTERNAL USB webcams. The Cirrus LT already has
support for an optional internal USB webcam.
Using an external USB webcam with the Cirrus LT is limited to what is supported
natively by the Teradici Firmware. Teradici only supports webcams that utilize
the older USB 1.1 specification. Newer webcams that utilize higher resolutions and
require USB 2.0 or greater are not supported by Teradici at this time. Given the data
throughput limitations available with USB 1.1 devices, the webcam experience is
acceptable, but the quality is highly dependent on network bandwidth. At best, you
can expect to see a webcam display resolution of 640 x 480.
Known external USB webcams found to work:
• HP Deluxe Webcam KQ246AA (RMN:DC8870)
• Logitech Webcam 5000 M/N: V-UAX16
• Logitech C170
Known external USB webcams found NOT to work:
• Logitech C920
• Logitech B910

Connecting to a mouse and keyboard
Using a mouse in the dedicated mouse port ensures full functionality when connected to a remote host and when you pull up the OnScreen Menu. The same applies
for the dedicated keyboard port.
To connect to an external mouse:
• Plug the mouse into the USB port with the picture of a mouse over it.
To connect to an external keyboard:
• Plug the keyboard into the USB port with the picture of the keyboard over it.
The mouse and keyboard are not included in the package. They are sold
separately.
When using an external keyboard in the dedicated USB keyboard port
you can press SHIFT-F10 to bring up the Cirrus LT OnScreen Menu.
Certain special multifunction or Bluetooth combo mouse and keyboards will work
in the dedicated keyboard port. Not all of these special devices have been tested. As
a general rule, you can try different keyboards without harming the Cirrus LT. Special keyboards should be plugged into the dedicated USB keyboard port on the right
hand side for compatibility. Combo Bluetooth keyboard and mouse dongles should
be plugged into the dedicated USB keyboard port.
If for some reason these special keyboards do not work in the dedicated keyboard
port, try them on the PCoIP USB ports on the left hand side of the notebook. You
may need to load drivers once the device is detected in the remote OS. Please contact NCS Help Desk if you identify a USB keyboard that does not work correctly
in the dedicated USB keyboard port. We are always looking to make our products
compatible with the latest peripherals.

Web Portal
Some public WiFi networks will require you to confirm or authenticate to the
WiFi network via a web page. If this is the case you need to enable the Web Portal (also known as a Captive Portal) feature under the administrator settings
in order for another window to pop up for you to interact with that WiFi network’s web interface. To connect to a Public WiFi Open Network, you are often
presented with a web page to accept a usage agreement, like the example shown
below. In these cases, Cirrus LT supports most of these types of authentication
web pages.
The Cirrus LT’s Network Settings enable Web Portal by default. If for
added security you want to disable this feature, you can in the Administrator submenu, described later in Chapter 4, under the “Administrator”
section.
• Ensure you have connected to the open WiFi network and have been assigned
an IP address. Once this is done, click on the Web Portal selection in the Network
Menu.
• If for some reason the network you are on does not have a web portal, the Cirrus
LT will take you to a default web page on ncst.com to confirm everything is
working properly and you should be able to do a remote session.

You may need to click REFRESH on the web portal to display the web
page. If for added security you want to disable this feature, you can in
the Administrator submenu, described later in Chapter 4, under the
“Administrator” section.
NCS strives to support many different types of web portal pages, but unfortunately incompatibilities will arise. In these cases, please enter a support ticket
on NCS’s Support Page with the web page or location that you were not able to
connect to and we will investigate why you were unable to connect.

Menu (OSM) Timeout, determine when Low Power Mode should be enabled, and to choose when Sleep Mode should be enabled.
Setting the duration of the OnScreen Menu
(OSM) Timeout
There are two OSM Timeout settings present on the Cirrus LT. The first setting dictates the OSM Timeout when using the NCS OSM. This is set within the
OSM, under Power Management > Power Settings >OSM Timeout. The second
setting dictates the display timeout while using Teradici’s Firmware. The OSMTimeout value set in the NCS menu will only apply when the NCS OSM is open.

How the Cirrus LT power management modes
are all related
No matter how you customize the Cirrus LT’s Power Management Modes via
the OnScreen Menu Timeout and the Teradici OSD Timeout, the Cirrus LT fol-
lows a pre-determined ‘chain of events’ in certain situations. Familiarizing yourself with this ‘chain of events’ can help you keep the Cirrus LT Power Management Modes at their optimal settings.
Chain of events
1. After a certain amount of user inactivity the LCD will turn off to conserve power. This is controlled via the OnScreen Menu Timeout AND/OR
the Teradici OSD Timeout. The OnScreen Menu Timeout controls when
the screen will timeout while the NCS OSM is being used, while the
Teradici OSD Timeout controls when the screen will timeout while using
Teradici’s Firmware. The Operating System settings will dictate when
the screen times out while in session unless the NCS OnScreen Menu is
open during your session.
2. Next, if the Low Power modes are enabled, the Sleep mode will activate
after the duration specified.
3. Auto Power Off is the lowest setting available. When Auto Power Off is
configured, the machine will shut off completely after the duration of
this setting has elapsed. However, this duration doesn’t start until after
the machine has entered low power mode/gone to sleep. If Wake-on-LAN
is also enabled, it will draw some power to keep the Ethernet port active.
In this Wake-on-LAN mode the Power LED will be solid amber, other-
wise all LEDs will be off.
Teradici has an auto-power off function of their own. It cannot be controlled in the local Firmware options, but can be set in both their Man-agement Console and their Web Portal for clients. This overrides all
other settings - if it’s set to 60 seconds, the device will turn off in 60
seconds after inactivity regardless of other settings in place.
84Cirrus LT User Manual v2.3 - Chapter 4
Page 85
How the Cirrus LT detects inactivity
Cirrus LT only detects inactivity by the LCD turning off (not by user inactivity).
There are three ways that the LCD will turn off due to inactivity.
1. If the OSM ‘Menu Display Timeout’ Menu is set to a value of X minutes,
and the OSM is left open and there is no mouse or keyboard activity for a
duration greater than X, the LCD will turn off.
2. If the Teradici ‘OSM Screen Saver Timeout’ Menu is set to X seconds, and
there is no mouse or keyboard activity while in Teradici’s Firmware for a
duration greater than X seconds the LCD will turn off.
3. If the VM OS is set to turn the display off after a value of X minutes, and
there is inactivity in a VM session for a duration greater than X, the LCD
will turn off.

power state. The Power LED will blink green and amber and then finally just
blink amber when it has gone into low power mode. You will need to press the
power button to wake up the device (moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard will not wake it up).
To change duration of the Sleep Mode Timeout:
The duration of time chosen for Sleep Mode Timeout will only begin
AFTER the LCD has timed out from inactivity. The duration chosen will
not begin until this occurs.
1. Click the Power Management submenu, and then click the Sleep Mode
