Introduction
Introduction
Congratulations and thank you for purchasing your new SUPERNOV A 10K highintensity projector.
Navitar's new 10K high-intensity slide projector is the latest advance in digital technology . This projector model uses metal halide lamp technology coupled with digital electronics technology for maximum performance.
The Navitar 10K is designed for high-end conferences or meetings in large auditoriums, lecture halls and conventions. It provides full RS-232 operation, random slide access compatibility , and enhanced corner illumination.
The 10K is available in a standard model or a dissolve model with either A VL or Dataton compatibility .
Usage, Building and Functional Principles
Navitar’s SUPERNOV A 10K is a very strong projector which can project 10 to 20 times more light than "regular" halogen projectors. In order to receive this high light output the SUPERNOV A 10K uses a strong HTI-met al halide lamp with power supply and suitable cooling for the slides. Do not look into the light while the
projector is in operation!
The SUPERNOV A 10K is durable and built under the latest technical findings to insure high reliability of the projector.
When designing the SUPEROV A 10K a new integrated concept was used for the first time in its class. The result was a professional designed casing made completely out of metal.
The SUPERNOV A 10K Digital and the SUPERNOVA 10K-DM also have mechanical fading installations with built-in digital control-electronics. These devices for fading are necessary because the HTI-metal halide lamp cannot be dimmed. Due to the precise control, the fading can be performed so well that it is difficult to detect any difference when compared to fading with dimmable lamps.
Please observe that the SUPERNOV A 10K has to be grounded. Navitar is not responsible for any damages that result from incorrect use. Carefully read this manual for instructions on the proper use of your projector.

Operation
Operating and Turning Off the 10K Projector
1. Plug the unit in to the correct fixture. The software version of the device will show up on the display panel for about 5 seconds. Now the projector is in the St and-by-mode which is confirmed by a red LED next to the On/Off button.
2. Press the On/Off button for one second to put the projector in operating mode. On the display you will see the current slide number in the slot which was zero after switching the projector on. You can easily adjust the Slide and Focus with the + and - buttons. Please try the settings to get a feeling for the simple functions of changing a slide and how to set the focus.
After starting the projector , the lamp should be on for approximately 5 minutes before the projector can be switched off. If you do not observe this, the lifeduration of the lamp will be dramatically shorter. In order to avoid this, a small safety feature is built into the projector:
During this 5 minutes period, a red LED on the control panel will blink. This reminds you, that the projector cannot be turned off or on for 5 minutes.
3. T o turn the projector off, please press the On/Of f button for one second. The lamp will switch off and the projector will run for approximately 3 minutes in the cooling mode. Af ter the cooling period the projector will turn off automatically . When turned off the projector automatically proceeds to the zero positions so that the tray can be removed easily .
Proper Ventilation
Good ventilation is absolutely necessary for the operation of the projector and the safety of the slides. Proper ventilation is obtained when the projector gets sufficient fresh air through the ventilation openings on the side and in the back of the projector. Do not block these ventilation openings. In rooms with high temperatures, or in projection cabinets, air-conditioning is advisable.
Operating at a Tilt Angle
The Navitar SUPERNOV A 10K has adjustable legs to allow for projection at various locations. The projector can be set to an angle of up to 30°. To get a larger angle, the projector legs can be propped up on pieces of wood or other sturdy material. Y ou should observe that the keystone correction is compensated by moving the screen to a certain angle.
ATTENTION:
The 10K uses a metal halide lamp requiring a minimum burning time of at least 5 minutes. If you do not observe the minimum burning time the life-duration of the lamp will be considerably shortened. A general advice is to ignite the lamp only when necessary to guarantee a long life-duration for your lamp. Frequent ignition shortens the life-duration of the lamp.

Maintenance and Care
Maintenance and Care
Navitar’s SUPERNOV A 10K projector is designed to be used for many years without any major maintenance needs. Maintaining a clean air filter will help to keep your projector working at its best.
Y our projector’s air filter is located on the main part of the projector, on the left side. It is used to take in air for proper ventilation. Depending on the dust and dirt found in your projection environment, the air filter might get clogged. The Navitar 10K uses a filter fleece in the air filter, which can be easily vacuumed from the out side.
In order to clean the optical system you have to remove the cover of the projector.
Navitar recommends that only qualified service staff clean the optical system to prevent damage.

Projection Lenses
Available Navitar Slide Projection Lenses
The SUPERNOV A 10K is equipped with a lens changing system. This enables the user to change to a different focal length lens within a few seconds. Navitar recommends the following projection lenses for the SUPERNOV A 10K:
Zoom Slide Lenses mm Inches Speed
GNZ-2435 55-100 2.25-4 f/3.5 GNZ-2528-M 70-125 2.75-5 f/2.8 GNZ-4835 100-200 4-8 f/3.5 GNZ-150230-M 150-230 6-9 f/3.5 GNZ-200300-M 200-300 8-12 f/3.5
Each of the lenses above is a high quality Navitar projection lens offering excellent contrast and superior brightness, especially with the HTI-lamp. If the focal length you require is not listed here, please contact Navitar for further assistance.
Focal Length
How to Determine a Suitable Lens
In general, you will use the proportion between the distance from the projector to the screen and the width of the projected image. This means when using a lens size 3.4:1 the projector has to be 3.4 feet away to get a 1 foot wide projected image.
Example:
Let us assume you would like to have a projected image of 26 feet in width and the distance from your projector to the wall is 105 feet. Then you proceed as follows:
Distance / Width of Projected Image 105 feet / 26 feet = 4 feet
Therefore, you need a lens with a focal length of 4.0:1. If you have any questions concerning the correct lens for your application, please
do not hesitate to call Navitar for assistance.

Slide Tray Use
Rotary Slide Tray
The SUPERNOV A 10K uses only rot ary slide trays. The advantages of the rot ary slide tray include its 80 slide capacity, slides are protected against dust, slides will not fall out if tray is dropped, and endless projections can be done easily because slide no. 80 is followed by slide no. 1.
Placing the Tray on the Projector
Before putting the tray on the projector, please, make sure that the bottom of the tray is clicked in correctly . To do this you t ake the tray to where the metal plate is facing up (pic. 1). Now turn the metal plate until you hear it click into the zero position (pic 2). You can place the tray on the projector without any problems and the zero position will fit into the appropriate groove.
Removing the Tray
No Slide / No Light
When switching off the SUPERNOV A 10K projector it will automatically go back to the zero position and the tray can easily be removed. The tray can only be removed in the zero position. There is a safety mechanism which prevents taking the tray off in any other position.
Should it occur that the projector is not in the zero position (e.g. after the electricity went off) you can use the following mechanism to unlock the tray . In the middle of the tray you can see the lock-mechanism and a small pin coming out towards you.
Move this pin carefully to the side. You will notice that a small metal tongue is slowly moving towards the centre. In this position the tray can be removed. The slide last projected is still in the slot and has to be removed manually . Proceed as mentioned above, make sure that the bottom of the tray is clicked in correctly (i.e. in the zero position).
The SUPERNOV A 10K has a built-in detector which recognizes when a slide is in the gate and then allows the projection light to pass through the slide. If there is no slide in the gate, the projector will not allow light to pass through the system.

5. Y ou can see the lamp in its socket. To remove the lamp you must remove the safety guard first. Do this by loosening the screws.
6. Now you can remove the HTI-lamp. Grab the ceramic-socket and pull it out easily . Do not touch the glass p art of the lamp! It might affect the quality of your projection.
15
Installing a New Lamp
7. Place the new lamp into the socket, remembering to only touch the ceramicsocket. (Replacement lamps are available from Navitar , part # 8-16165.) Put the safety guard back in place and secure it with the two screws. Carefully push the whole base plate of the lamp back into the projector.
ATTENTION! Make sure that the lamp is properly pushed into the reflector and secure it with the designated screws. Despite the high quality of the OSRAM HTIlamps, burner positions may vary due to production. Therefore, we recommend you readjust the lamp after each exchange (see below).
Lamp Adjustment
The socket for the lamp module in the SUPERNOV A 10K projector is secured at three points so that the lamp can be adjusted in every direction.
1. Ignite the lamp and insert an empty slide (no picture) in the slot. The lighter side of the frame must face the lamp.
2. Wait about one minute for the lamp to reach maximum brightness. You will see a white projection on the screen. The screen will not be evenly white. Slight variations of color might even be visible. Y ou will need to move the brightest spot (hot-spot) to the center of the projection. We recommend two people work together to adjust the lamp to move the hot-spot.
3. One person, using a lux meter, should place the measuring probe precisely in the center of the projection. The second person, behind the projector, should turn screw J1 so the light density gets higher in the center of the projection. The person reading the lux meter can help direct the person adjusting the screw. Once the maximum light density is obtained with screw J1, adjust screw J2 in the same manner. Finally, adjust screw J3 in the same way .
4. When all three screws are adjusted, repeat the procedure for fine adjustment.

Slide Recommendations
Slide Mounts
For the high-performance SUPERNOV A 10K projector , we recommend special high-performance slide mounts, such as the AHX-slide mounts from Wess. This slide mount provides optimal cooling, simple handling, and great performance. It is specifically made so a slide can safely be projected over a long period of time without damage.
When using slide mounts from other manufacturers, we recommend you use slide mounts without glass. When glass mounts are not completely dry, they tend to show "heat stains" on the screen. These stains usually disappear after a few minutes, but they might damage the film, so it is best to avoid using glass mounts.
T o prevent potential focus problems, always use the same slide mounts for one tray.
Although slide damage is unlikely when following the projector instructions, we recommend using duplicate slides instead of original slides.
Slide Production
For the production of your slides, please observe the following recommendations:
Do not project original slides. Always use copies (duplicate slides).Use Kodak Ektachrome (6DIN) to copy your slides (e.g. T ype SD 5071).When projecting slide copies, be sure the layer containing the information is
facing the lens.
As an alternative to color images, you can show images in black and white. Orthofilm has proven to be an ideal medium for black and white pictures. This film has high contrast, a long life-term, and is very suitable for projections. However, some grey tones do not show up very well. Ortho-film slides must be printed by screen process.
If you have any questions or problems with the production of your slides, please do not hesitate to call for assistance.
