Introduction Chapter 1
LabVIEW and LabWindows Application Software
LabVIEW and LabWindows are innovative program development software packages for data acquisition and control applications. LabVIEW uses graphical programming, whereas LabWindows enhances traditional programming languages. Both packages include extensive libraries for data acquisition, instrument control, data analysis, and graphical data presentation.
LabVIEW currently runs on three different platforms—AT/MC/EISA computers running Microsoft Windows, the Macintosh platform, and the Sun SPARCstation platform. LabVIEW features interactive graphics, a state-of-the-art user interface, and a powerful graphical programming language. The LabVIEW Data Acquisition VI Library, a series of VIs for using LabVIEW with National Instruments DAQ hardware, is included with LabVIEW. The LabVIEW Data Acquisition VI Libraries are functionally equivalent to the NI-DAQ software, except that the SCXI functions are not included in the LabVIEW software for Sun.
LabWindows has two versions—LabWindows for DOS is for use on PCs running DOS, and LabWindows/CVI is for use on PCs running Windows and for Sun SPARCstations. LabWindows/CVI features interactive graphics, a state-of-the-art user interface, and uses the ANSI standard C programming language. The LabWindows Data Acquisition Library, a series of functions for using LabWindows with National Instruments DAQ hardware, is included with the NI-DAQ software kit. The LabWindows Data Acquisition libraries are functionally equivalent to the NI-DAQ software, except that the SCXI functions are not included in the LabWindows/CVI software for Sun.
Using LabVIEW or LabWindows software will greatly reduce the development time for your data acquisition and control application.
NI-DAQ Driver Software
The NI-DAQ driver software is included at no charge with all National Instruments DAQ hardware. NI-DAQ is not packaged with SCXI or accessory products except for the SCXI-1200. NI-DAQ has an extensive library of functions that you can call from your application programming environment. These functions include routines for analog input (A/D conversion), buffered data acquisition (high-speed A/D conversion), analog output (D/A conversion), waveform generation, digital I/O, counter/timer operations, SCXI, RTSI, self-calibration, messaging, and acquiring data to extended memory.
NI-DAQ also internally addresses many of the complex issues between the computer and the DAQ hardware such as programming interrupts and DMA controllers. NI-DAQ maintains a consistent software interface among its different versions so that you can change platforms with minimal modifications to your code. Figure 1-1 illustrates the relationship between NI-DAQ and LabVIEW and LabWindows. You can see that the data acquisition parts of LabVIEW and LabWindows are functionally equivalent to the NI-DAQ software.

Introduction Chapter 1
Register-Level Programming
The final option for programming any National Instruments DAQ hardware is to write registerlevel software. Writing register-level programming software can be very time-consuming and inefficient, and is not recommended for most users. The only users who should consider writing register-level software should meet at least one of the following criteria:
National Instruments does not support your operating system or programming language.
You are an experienced register-level programmer who is more comfortable writing your
own register-level software.
Even if you are an experienced register-level programmer, always consider using NI-DAQ, LabVIEW, or LabWindows to program your National Instruments DAQ hardware. Using the NI-DAQ, LabVIEW, or LabWindows software is easier than, and as flexible as, register-level programming, and can save you weeks of development time.
The SCXI-1162HV User Manual and your software manuals contain complete instructions for programming your SCXI-1162HV with NI-DAQ, LabVIEW, or LabWindows. If you are using NI-DAQ, LabVIEW, or LabWindows to control your board, you should not need the registerlevel programmer manual.
The SCXI-1162HV Register-Level Programmer Manual contains low-level programming details, such as register maps, bit descriptions, and register programming hints, that you will need only for register-level programming. If you want to obtain the register-level programmer manual, please fill out the Register-Level Programmer Manual Request Form in Appendix B, Customer Communication, at the end of this manual and send it to National Instruments.

Introduction Chapter 1
Unpacking
Your SCXI-1162HV module is shipped in an antistatic package to prevent electrostatic damage to the module. Electrostatic discharge can damage several components on the module. To avoid such damage in handling the module, take the following precautions:
Ground yourself via a grounding strap or by holding a grounded chassis such as an
SCXI chassis.
Touch the antistatic package to a metal part of your SCXI chassis before removing the
module from the package.
Remove the module from the package and inspect the module for loose components or any
other sign of damage. Notify National Instruments if the module appears damaged in any way. Do not install a damaged module into your SCXI chassis.
Never touch the exposed pins of connectors.

Page 17
Chapter 2 Configuration and Installation
This chapter describes the SCXI-1162HV jumper configurations and installation of the SCXI-1162HV into the SCXI chassis.
Module Configuration
The SCXI-1162HV has six user-configurable jumpers and one reserved jumper that are shown in the parts locator diagram in Figure 2-1. You use these jumpers to configure the SCXI-1162HV rear connector.
Notes: When you are controlling the SCXI-1162HV through the SCXIbus and are not using
the rear connector (not cabled directly to a plug-in DAQ board), the positions of the configuration jumpers are irrelevant.
If you want to use a single DAQ board to control a chassis which contains analog modules in addition to your SCXI-1162HV, then you must cable your DAQ board to one of the analog modules rather than to the SCXI-1162HV.
You can configure the SCXI-1162HV rear connector to send data directly from the inputs in parallel, or to form a serial communication link with the SCXIbus. In the latter case, you can also configure the rear connector to connect to a DIO-type or an MIO-type DAQ board.
You must configure the module in the chassis that is cabled to the DAQ board to allow reads from module registers. (Specifically, the module must be configured to send data from the SCXIbus MISO line to the SERDATOUT pin of the module rear connector. Refer to the user manual for the SCXI module you are cabling to a DAQ board for information on how to accomplish this.)
Configuration Options
The SCXI-1162HV is shipped configured for serial communication through a DIO-type board or the SCXI chassis. Change the jumper configuration from the factory default settings only if you plan to cable the SCXI-1162HV rear connector to an MIO-type board, or to use the SCXI-1162HV in parallel mode, or if the SCXI-1162HV is a controller module for a multichassis system.
© National Instruments Corporation 2-1 SCXI-1162HV User Manual
Page 18
Configuration and Installation Chapter 2
Configuring the Rear Connector for Parallel Mode
When the rear connector is configured for parallel mode, the data from each input is sent directly to a rear connector pin. You do not need serial communication with the SCXI chassis or modules to read the data when the module is in parallel mode. This mode may be useful when you want to send data from the SCXI-1162HV directly to equipment other than a DAQ board.
When the SCXI-1162HV is configured for parallel mode, a DAQ board cabled to the module can only read from that module; communication with the SCXI chassis or other modules in that chassis must be through another DAQ board. Only DIO DAQ boards can read the data from the SCXI-1162HV in parallel mode; MIO boards can only read from the SCXI-1162HV in serial mode.
When you configure the SCXI-1162HV for parallel mode, the module can drive either all 32 digital lines of the rear connector or only the first 24 lines. When you cable a DIO-24 or the DIO portion of an AT-MIO-16D to an SCXI-1162HV in parallel mode, the SCXI-1162HV must be configured to drive only 24 of the rear connector lines, because the DIO-24 and the AT-MIO-16D only have 24 digital inputs. Do not attempt to connect the SCXI-1162HV to a DIO-24 or an AT-MIO-16D with the module configured to drive all 32 lines in parallel, as this may cause driver contention.
Note: When the rear connector is configured for parallel mode, the data can still be read in
serial mode through the SCXIbus connector. The jumper set configuration only affects the rear signal connector; no other module functionality is affected by the jumper positions.
Configuring the Rear Connector for Serial Mode
When the rear connector is configured for serial mode, there is a serial data link between the rear connector and the SCXIbus. This lets a DAQ board cabled to the rear connector communicate with the SCXI-1162HV and with all other modules in the chassis. This is the recommended mode of operation because you only need one DAQ board for an entire SCXI system.
When the SCXI-1162HV is configured for serial mode, only digital data is transferred between the SCXIbus and the rear signal connector. Thus, in a mixed system of analog modules and digital modules, the DAQ board must be cabled to an analog module. If the DAQ board were cabled to a digital module such as the SCXI-1162HV, the analog signals from analog modules could not reach the DAQ board.

Chapter 2 Configuration and Installation
Jumper Use
To configure the SCXI-1162HV module, use the six user-configurable jumpers (W2–W7) shown in the parts locator diagram, Figure 2-2. (Jumper W1 is a reserved jumper and should remain unconnected.) If you are controlling the SCXI-1162HV via the SCXIbus and are not using the rear connector, then the positions of these jumpers are irrelevant. Tables 2-1 and 2-2 list the description and configuration of the user-configurable jumpers. To change the configuration of the module, refer to Figures 2-1 and 2-2 as you perform the following steps:
1. Remove the grounding screw of the top cover.
2. Snap out the top cover of the shield by placing a screwdriver in the groove at the bottom of
the module.
3. Remove the jumpers to be changed and replace them on the appropriate pins.
4. Record the new jumper settings on the SCXI-1162HV Hardware Configuration Form in
Appendix B, Customer Communication.
5. Snap the top cover back in place.
6. Replace the grounding screw to ensure proper shielding.

Jumper W3, when set to position P, connects a 2.2 k pull-up resistor to the SERDATOUT line. An open-collector driver actively drives low or goes to a high-impedance state, relying on a pullup resistor to make the signal line go high. If too many pull-up resistors are attached to the SERDATOUT line, the drivers cannot drive the line low. To prevent this, set jumper W3 to position P on only one of the SCXI-1162HVs that are cabled to the DAQ board in a multichassis system. It does not matter which of the SCXI-1162HVs cabled to the DAQ board has the pull-up connected.
Hardware Installation
You can install the SCXI-1162HV in any available SCXI chassis. After you have made any necessary changes and have verified and recorded the jumper settings on the form in Appendix B, Customer Communication, you are ready to install the SCXI-1162HV. Chapter 3 Signal Connections
This chapter describes the SCXI-1162HV signal connections via the front and rear connectors, and has specifications and connection instructions for the SCXI-1162HV connector signals.
The following warnings contain important safety information concerning hazardous voltages.
Warning: Connections that exceed any of the maximum ratings of input signals on the
SCXI-1162HV can damage the SCXI-1162HV board and the SCXIbus. Maximum input ratings for each signal are given in this chapter under the discussion of that signal. National Instruments is not liable for any damages resulting from signal connections that exceed these ratings.
K
EEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS. Do not remove equipment covers or shields
unless you are trained to do so. If signal wires are connected to the module or terminal block, dangerous voltages may exist even when the equipment is turned off. To avoid dangerous electrical shock, do not perform procedures involving cover or shield removal unless you are qualified to do so.
D
O NOT OPERATE DAMAGED EQUIPMENT. The safety protection features built
into this module can become impaired if the module becomes damaged in any way. If it is damaged, turn the module off and do not use until service-trained personnel can check its safety. If necessary, return the module to National Instruments for service and repair to ensure that its safety is not compromised.
D
O NOT SUBSTITUTE PARTS OR MODIFY EQUIPMENT. Because of the danger of
introducing additional hazards, do not install unauthorized parts or modify the module. Return the module to National Instruments for service and repair to ensure that its safety features are not compromised.
When using the terminal block with high common-mode voltages, you insulate your signal wires appropriately. National Instruments is NOT liable for any damages or injuries resulting from inadequate signal wire insulation.

Input Channels
The optically isolated inputs of the SCXI-1162HV consist of bidirectional light-emitting diodes and current-limiting circuitry. The SCXI-1162HV has eight banks of four of these optically isolated inputs. Each bank of inputs has a separate connection for the ground reference (GND) for that bank. The four inputs of each bank are referenced to the GND of that bank, so for any bank of inputs to work, a GND must be connected to that bank. When a voltage is applied between an input and its ground, signal current flows through the input and the diode emits light that is sensed by a photosensitive circuit. When this circuit senses the light, it returns a logichigh digital signal.
Sensing DC Voltages
When a positive or negative DC voltage with a magnitude of at least 2 V is referenced to the GND of a bank and is applied to an input of that bank, the SCXI-1162HV registers a logic high for that input. Current-limiting circuitry limits the input current to 1.5 mA for input voltages up to 240 VDC referenced to the GND signal. If there is no such voltage, the SCXI-1162HV will register a logic low for that input. Thus, you can use the SCXI-1162HV to sense the presence of a wide range of DC signals; from digital logic levels to DC power supply levels up to 240 V.
There is a delay of approximately 1 ms between the time a voltage is removed and the time the SCXI-1162HV recognizes this change.
SCXI-1162HV User Manual 3-4 © National Instruments Corporation
Page 28
Chapter 3 Signal Connections
Sensing AC Voltages
The SCXI-1162HV senses a wide range of AC signals by registering a constant logic high while an AC voltage (referenced to a GND) is present at an input. Signals with low amplitude and low frequency appear as signals that are alternately turned on and off; therefore the module alternately registers logic highs and logic lows for that signal. For sinusoidal signals, a 50 or 60 Hz signal with a voltage of at least 20 Vrms returns a constant logic high level. For 1 kHz and higher frequency signals, a 2 Vrms signal returns a constant logic high level.
The current-limiting circuitry limits the current to 1.5 mA for input voltages up to 240 Vrms for a sinusoidal signal.
Signal Isolation
The GND and inputs of each bank are isolated from the GND and inputs of any other bank. In addition, all signals are isolated from the chassis earth ground and the internal circuitry of the module. These barriers provide isolation for voltages up to 450 VAC or VDC and protect the user and the SCXI system. There is no isolation between signals of the same bank. You must not exceed the voltage limits of the inputs referenced to their respective GND signals.
Signal Connection Example
In Figure 3-2, one channel of the SCXI-1162HV is being used to sense that a load is being powered. The load is connected to a power supply by means of a switch. This power supply can be AC or DC and can be any voltage within the SCXI-1162HV range. Common supplies may include +5 VDC, -48 VDC, or 120 VAC 60 Hz. When the switch is open, no current flows through the load and no voltage is applied to the load or to the SCXI-1162HV input. The digital logic of the SCXI-1162HV then registers a logic low or 0 for the channel. When the switch is closed, the power supply voltage is applied across both the load and the input, and the SCXI-1162HV registers a logic high or 1 for the channel.
