indoor air quality
Yournew NAPOLEON waterfallwill dramatically improvethe indoor airquality in your home. The waterfall isa natural humidifier
which helps alleviate dryskin and allergies. This is extremelybeneficial in dryclimates and alsocold climates whereforced air furnaces dry theair. The waterfall alsocleans the airby attracting contaminants. Moving water attractsairborne particles, suchas dust, pet dander, pollen andother pollutants. The waterfalldraws these particlesinto the water, whichis thenfiltered through a 5 micron filter beforebeing recirculated. The result iscleaner, fresher, humidifiedair. Waterfalls also generatenegative ions. These odourless tasteless invisible moleculesare created innature as airmolecules break apartdue to sunlight, radiation, and movingair and water. Researchers nowbelieve that negativeions aid inalleviating depression, reducingstress and boostingenergy.
installation Tools and materials required
Before you beginhooking upthe fountain ensurethat youhave access to the followingmaterials andtools. Tools:
-utility knife
- adjustable w rench
- 3/8” nut driver
-pliers
- flat screwdriver
Materials:
- saddle valveand 1/4”tubing (ice makerplumbing kit)(required if unit is beingconnected to house watersupply)
- teflon tape
- possible additional 1/2” i.d. tubing and 3/4” i.d. tubing depending on location of unit.
- liquid TSP (TrisodiumPhosphate) or TSP Substitutecleaner
appropriate location
There are severalthings to considerwhen choosing theappropriate location toinstall your waterfall. The waterfall isdesigned to beinstalled into a2” x 4”interior wall. The waterfallshould not beinstalled in a load bearingwall,
unless it can be framed in withproper supportsand headers as required by your local building codes. Check with your local building authority forspecifications. Installing thewaterfall in anexterior wall isnot recommended, asit cannot beproperly insulated. If there areno suitable alternativelocations, then thewaterfall can beinstalled in a2” x 6”wall using rigidfoam insulation between the exterior of the houseand theback ofthe fountain. The waterfallcannot beinstalled in a 2” x 4” exteriorwall.
The see-thru waterfall only has water running down one side of the glass, so thoughtshould begiven asto whichdirection the
unit is mounted. The side with themanifold isthe side with the water flow. The see-thru waterfall is not designed to beair tightlike a window and cannot be placed on an exterior wall. If being placed between rooms where privacy may bea concern,a cloudedor patternedglass can beused. Some noise will also travelbetween the tworooms that sharethe waterfall.
The lights, pump andoptional UV-light require power. Make sureyou choose alocation that hasthe available power within reachof
the supplied electricalcords. The receptaclemust be GFI(ground fault interrupt)protected. Electrical work mustbe done bya qualifiedelectrician. Checkwith your localbuilding authority forspecificationsfor your area. Do not runextensioncords behind walls.
An area to locate the pump module is also required. It should be located as close to the fountain as possible and in a location
that is easilyaccessible for servicingand maintaining themodule. For every 1foot thatthe pump moduleis located awayfrom the fountain unit, 1 inch of drop is required from the fountain basin drain outlet to thepump moduledrain inlet.
The waterfall isdesigned to beconnected to a watersource, to automatically refill thebasin as waterevaporates, and to a drain,
in case of accidental overflow. The unitcan beoperated without the water source connection, but is not recommended. The water will evaporate naturallyand will requireadditional water to ensure properflow and pumpoperation. Damage to thepump incurred by running dry is not covered by warranty. The waterfall must be hooked-up to a drain whichwill allowthe tankto bepurged for routine cleaning, andwill prevent theunit from overflowingif the floatvalve malfunctions.
Waterdamage to surrounding objectsin your home isnot coveredin yourNAPOLEON warranty. The waterfall is designed to not
splash, however ifit is notproperly installed ormaintained, some splashing mayoccur. Protect delicatenearby surfaces thatcould be damaged by splashing. Donot trim with materials that can be damaged by moisture such as particle board or MDF. It isbest to install the unitin stone, marble, glass, tile etc.
Although your NAPOLEONWaterfallwill bebeneficial to theair quality of your home, excess moisture can lead tothe formation of
mold and mildew. It is recommended that allhomes have some form ofhumidity controland air exchange system toprevent such an occurence.
3
water
Wateris perhaps the mostcritical component in the waterfall. Dirty or contaminatedwater will quicklycause operational problems
with your waterfall. House water must be softened andfiltered if the unit is to beconnected tothe watersupply. RO (Reverse Osmosis) water willgive thebest results, andrequire the least amount ofmaintenance. If the unit is notbeing connectedto the house supply, distilled bottled wateris recommended. The provided filterand optionalUV-lightcannotprevent hard waterdeposits from forming onthe surfaces of your waterfall. Hard water will alsocause plugged passagesand manifoldports, reducing theflow effect on the waterfall surface. The life-spanof thepump will also be adversely affected dueto theuse of hard water. Use ofRO or distilled water isby far thebest way ofensuring years ofcarefree enjoyment fromyour waterfall.
The provided sedimentfilter will helpprevent clogging ofthe manifoldports that dispersethe water downthe face ofthe waterfall.
The water that flows downthe facewill attract dust, debris particlesand mouldspores that are floating in the airin yourhome. This will help tonaturally filter theair you breatheand keepyour home cleaner. However thefilter will become contaminated and the water flow willbe reduced overtime. We recommend thatthe filter bereplaced whenever the waterfall iscleaned, every 3-4months or sooner as deemed necessaryby poorwater flow. The filters can bepurchased throughyour authorized NAPOLEON dealer.
The optional ultraviolet-lightwill help destroyany green algae, bacteria, mould ormildew found inthe water. Flowing water isfairly
resistant to thiskind ofgrowth, but in time the water willbecome contaminatedand the systemwill haveto be flushed and thoroughly cleaned. Notonly unsightly but mould and bacteria growth will plug the manifold ports, reducing the flow of water and can damage the waterpump over time. The optional UV-lightwill helpto keep your waterfall relativelymaintenance free bykeeping the water cleaner for a longerperiod oftime. The UV-bulb must be replaced every year to ensure properoperation. The UV-bulbs are availablefrom yourauthorizedNAPOLEON dealer.
The waterfall isdesigned to beconnected directly to a watersource. Waterfallsare natural humidifiersfor the environment. The
amount of waterthe waterfallconsumes daily is dependant uponhow dry the air is,and howlarge the waterfall surface is. There is a float valvethat will openas the waterlevel drops, allowing water toenter the system. This willensure that thewater level iskept at the height required for proper operationof thewater pump. The pump shouldnever beallowed to run dry and damage resulting from that willnot becovered by warranty. If there is nota suitablewater source tobe had nearby, thewaterfall canbe installed asa stand-alonesystem, but thewater level willhave to bemonitored frequentlyand supplemented asneeded.
WATER PUMPS
The water pumpsupplied with yourwaterfall has beenselected for itshigh flow volume, efficiency, quiet operationand reliability.
The pump is suitable for pushing water to a height of 12 feet, however the flow is reduced greatly atthat height. This must be kept in mind when finding a location for the pumpand water basin, so the pump module must be located on the same floor as the fountain. The minimum spacerequired for the pump module for the waterfall is18” x 18” x 15” high. The systemhas a flow control valve after the filter that canbe adjusted toprovide the desiredflow rateon the waterfallsurface.
The pump must be kept submersed in water at alltimes whilein operation. The water acts as a cooling agent for the pump,
preventing the pumpfrom overheating. Low water levels, frequentlyturning the pump on and off andimpurities in the water from poor waterfall maintenancewill shorten thelife of thepump. If maintained properly, the pumpwill provide yearsof reliable service.
If you hear excessive noise coming from your pump, check first to see that you have enough water in the basin to keep the pump
fully submerged below 1-2” of water. The pump should not be vibrating against thetub, butif itis, itcan beisolated byplacing a small piece of sponge between the pump and the basin. Be sure to not block or restrictin anyway thepump’s water inlet.
ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
The waterfall willrequire 2 separate110voltelectrical receptacles, one for thelightsand onefor the waterpump. GFIrecepta-
cles must be used, becauseof theuse of water and possibility of contact.
It is notrequired that the receptacles be wired on theirown circuit, asthe pump, lights and optionalUV-lightdraw very little
current. If thereis already a heavy loadelsewhere on thatcircuit or youhave trouble withbreakers tripping,a separate circuit will need to beinstalled. Any circuitwiring or GFI installation mustbe doneby a qualified electrician. If you would liketo be able to turn the fountain onand off,the receptacles should be wired to awall switch. Twowall switchedreceptacles are recommended, one for the pump and UV-light (optional) and one for the lights. This willallow youto turnthe lightson andoff independently of the fountain.
4
INSTALLATION
The framing dimensionsare included inthe framing specificationsdrawing. The unit is designedto be installedafterdrywalling.
For added protectionwater resistant drywall (green board)or cement board are recommendedin thevicinity of the fountain. The fountainis designed to be attachedto the studsover thedrywall along bothvertical sides of the fountainusing drywall screws. This will leave abasically flush surfaceto trim over. Leaktest thewaterfall before fullyenclosing. All trim usedon the fountainshould be made of real wood (notMDF), orany othermaterial that is not damaged by moisture, with severalcoats of a water proof coating (paint or urethane) depending on the desired look. The bottom piece of trim can only be nailedat theends, becauseit is mounted in front ofthe stainless basin. It shouldbe siliconed tothe stainless basinfor additional support.
After installing thefountain, connect the piping as shownin thepiping diagrams. The tubing to connect the unit overflow to the
house drain is not supplied. If theunit isbeing connectedto thewater supply, use an ice maker plumbing kit (not supplied) to connect the water supply to the floatvalve. When theunit isoperational, adjustthe floatvalve so that it turns the water off whenthe top of the pump is submerged below 1-2”of water. Ensure thatthe wing nut on the side of the float valve is properly tightened. Connect the lightwire to the terminals onthe transformer.
WATERFALL SURFACE MATERIALS
The waterfall models WF6, WF9, and WF18 are supplied witha stainlesssteel panel for the water to flow over. The surface of
the stainless steel mustbe cleaned to remove anygrease or oilymaterials left behindfrom the manufacturingprocess. The protective coating willalso leave aresidue behind. Anyresidue left on thesurface, or oily residue fromyour hands, willrepel the water and prevent asheet of water from formingover thepanel. This will give youthin streams of water with large dryspots in between. Cleaning the panelwith liquid TSP(orTSP Substitute) willremove any residueor filmthat is impedingthe progress of the water. Clean the panelthoroughly two orthree times before the firstuse.
The See-Thru waterfallmodel isnot supplied with any surfacepanel. The glass panelcan be ordered from anyglass andwindow
dealer in yourlocal area. There isno specific typeof recommended glass, but theglass should be1/4” thick. Clear glassdisplays the water flowpattern the best, but ifprivacy between the adjoining roomsis desiredsome type of smoked oropaqued glass will work as well.
Before starting the waterfall, the entirepanel surface shouldbe wet down, either byspray bottle, orwet cloth. This willhelp the
water to spreadevenly across thepanel. The waveeffect of waterflowing downthe panel, willbe attained afterthepanel is covered in water. The wave pattern canbe adjustedby increasing or restricting the flow of water withthe valveat the side of the filter. Adjust the valve toachieve the effectthat is mostpleasing to your eye. It isimportantto remember thattoo littlewater flow cancause dry spotsto reappearon the surfaceof thewaterfall. Youcan increase theflow ofwater slightly untilthey disappear. Lightly rubbing a wet cloth orScotchbrite pad(careful not toscratch thestainlesssteel surface),across the panel may beenough to remove any dry spots.

GROOVED LUXIDIO PANEL: An optional grooved LUXIDIO panel which enhances the ripple effect can be purchased at your
authorized NAPOLEON dealer. This panel must be cleaned with liquidTSP (or TSPSubstitute) before being placed in the unit, to prevent dust and debris from the manufacturing process from entering thewater. Use caution when cleaning the grooves on the panelas the machinededges can be very sharp. The stainless steelpanel must beremoved before installingtheLUXIDIO panel. Turnoffthe water before switching thepanels. Toremovethe stainless steelpanel, slide itupwards slightly, then swing thebottom of the paneltowards you, clearing the panelretaining brackets. Slide thepanel downwards and out ofthe fountain. Install the LUXIDIOpanel in the reverse order. The LUXIDIO panelwill require more water toachieve the samewave effect asthe stainless panel,as the grooves will filland retain water. Again any dryspotscan beremoved by rubbinghorizontally with aScotchbrite pad.

Cut thecement boardto the size of your existing stainless steelpanel. Ensure thatthe tiles canbe used in a wetenvironment. Porcelain tiles arerecommended. Tile the surface, using thinsetmortar, as youwould a ceramictile floor or bathroom wall. It is not necessary to leave a gap or grout line in your tile. Ensure that the bottom edge of thetiles are flush with the bottom edge of the cement board. Youcan choose any colour or pattern thatyou like,to match the room or surroundings. The waterwill flowover the tiles, just as it doeson thestainless steel panel, but besure tokeep the edges of the tiles fairly flush toeach otherto prevent the water from splashing off. Surfaces less than 3/8” thick, suchas glass or mirror, can beinstalledin front of the stainlesspanel. The stainlesspanelmust be removed for allpanels thicker than 3/8” upto a maximum of 3/4”. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
The waterfall shouldbe drained and cleaned every3-4 months, possibly more dependingon thequality of thewater. The water-
fall surface can be cleanedusing awarm soap and water mixture. Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners onthe surfaceof the stainlesssteel panel or it willpermanently scratch the surface. Any wiping motion shouldbe done in the directionof thegrain. If small scratches do occur, theycan beblended outby gentle rubbing in the direction of the grain with a Scotchbrite pad.
The water shouldbe completely flushedand drained from the system- switch thevalve to
the purge setting, and run the pumpto pump the water out. Refill the tank, run the water through the fountain for 3 minutes and purge again. If calcium or hard water deposits are forming on thepanel or anywhereelse in the system, cycleCLR solution through the system until the depositsareremoved thenpurge the systema few timeswith water.
If there are spotson thepanel thatdry out, check that there are noblocked portsin the
manifold tube. Remove the three nuts that secure the tube cover, and removethe cover. Remove the tube by flexing itout inthe centre. This will allow the endsto pullout. Poke the holes out with an opened paper clip, and then flush the tube with water. Clean the angled surface that the manifold sprays ontowith liquid TSP (orTSPsubstitute). It iscritical that thissurface is extremely clean. Installthe tubeback into the unit, withthe portsaiming straight downand refillwith water. Installthe tubecover and testthe unit.

WATERFALL SURFACE INSTALLATION
The stainless steel panelprovided with WF6,WF9, and WF18 is installedsimply by slidingthe top ofthe panel underthe retaining
bracket at the top ofthe waterfall, and pushingit highenough to slip over the bottom support brackets. The weldedbrackets that protrudeat an anglefrom the waterfallhousing, merely providepressure to thepanelto prevent itfrom bowing. The optional acrylic panelcan be placed in frontof the stainlesssteelpanel in thesame manner. If building yourown ceramic tileor slatebackground, you mustremove the stainlesssteel panel, because ofthe thickness ofthe tile and cementboard backing.
The glass panelfor WF9ST isinstalledfrom the manifold side bysliding the topof the glass into thegap between theretaining
bracket and the rear panel support, and pushing it high enoughto slipover thelip onthe bottomsupport brackets. The glass should fit tight at the top and not rattle. Ifso itcan beremoved andthe frontretaining bracketcan bepushed in,closing up the gap so the glassfitstight.
