The MultiMobile USB V.92 Portable USB modem MT9234MU-CDC provides V.92/56K data rates, fax and
file transfer capabilities and a hot-swappable USB interface. This modem, weighing only 2 ounces, is
ideal for mobile users who want email and Internet access on the road. The MT9234MU-CDC modem
can also serve as the mobile user’s home office desktop modem.
This user’s guide helps you install, configure, test and use your modem.
Features
Telecom Safety Warnings
Before servicing, disconnect this product from its power source and telephone network. Also:
● Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
● Never install a telephone jack in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet
locations.
● Use this product with UL and cUL listed computers only.
● Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface.
● Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
● Avoid using a telephone during an electrical storm. There may be a remote risk of electrical shock
from lightning.
● Do not use a telephone in the vicinity of a gas leak.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire, use only 26 AWG or larger UL Listed or CSA Certified

Installing the Modem Driver
Before you begin, go to the Multi-Tech website and download the driver for your modem.
Installing the Modem in Windows 7
After connecting the MT9234MU-CDC to an available USB port, Windows displays a message that the
driver software was not successfully installed.
To install the driver software:
1. From the Windows Start button and select Control Panel.
2. Select the Hardware and Sound link.
3. In the Devices and Printers group, click Device Manager.

4. In the list of devices, right-click on MT9234MU-CDC and select Update Driver Software.

5. Click Browse my computer for driver software.
6. Click Browse and navigate to the area where you downloaded the driver.
7. Select the appropriate drivers for your device (either 34-bit or 64-bit) and click OK.

8. Click Next to continue the installation.
9. A Windows Security window can appear, stating that the publisher cannot be verified. Click Install
this driver software anyway.
10. A transitory window appears, as the installation completes.
11. To finish installing, click Close.
Your modem is installed and ready to use.
After you have installed the modem, register the MT9234MU product. To do so, open an Internet
browser and go to the following address. Follow instructions at this site:
2. If you have not already done so, connect the modem’s USB cable to a USB port on the computer and
connect the phone line between the modem and a telephone wall jack.
3. Windows detects that the new modem is present and starts the New Hardware wizard. Select the
Locate and install driver software (recommended) option.
Note: As you install, the Vista ‘User Account Control’ (hereafter referred to as the UAC) may prompt you. If so
click Continue to install.

4. The New Hardware wizard asks if you want to search online for drivers. Select Don’t search online.
5. In the wizard pane that asks to you insert a disc, click I don’t have the disc. Show me other options.
Click Next.

6. Navigate to the location where you downloaded the driver. And then select the desired driver.
7. A pop-up window for Windows Security asks if you want to install the device software from Multi-
Tech Systems Incorporated.

8. Windows finishes the installation.
9. A window opens to tell you that you have successfully installed the software. Click Close.
After installing the modem and setting up Internet access, register the product. To do so, open an
Internet browser and go to the following address. Follow the instructions that appear at the site:
Installing the Modem in Windows XP and Server 2003 or 2008
These instructions describe how to install the modem to operate with the following operating systems:
Windows Server 2008, XP, or 2003.
The procedure in this section uses Windows XP as the operating system; the other operating systems
have similar windows.
1. Connect the USB cable between the MultiModem and the PC.
The Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard page opens. Select No, not this time. Then click Next.
2. The wizard helps you install the software for MT9234MU-CDC.
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). Click Next.

3. In the next wizard page, select Search for the best drive in these locations, and then ensure that the
item Include this location in the search is the only option selected.
4. Click Browse, and navigate to the area where you downloaded the driver.
5. Click Next.
6. The wizard searched for the driver, and displays the message Please wait while the wizard
searches...

7. You may be prompted by the Windows Logo check. It is safe to continue (select to Continue
Anyway) as the installation file has passed certification testing for Windows Vista (all other
operating systems may display a certification warning).
8. The wizard displays the message Please wait while the wizard installs the software.

9. At the Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard page click Finish.
After you have installed the product and set up Internet access, register the product. To do so, open an
Internet browser and go to the following address. Follow the instructions that appear at this site:
Different countries have different requirements for how modems work. Therefore, before you use the
modem, configure it to match the defaults of the country in which you are using it. You can configure
the MT9234MU-CDC either manually using AT commands or with the Global Wizard.
Using the Global Wizard Utility to Configure Country Code
The Global Wizard configuration utility is recommended for computers running Windows Vista,
Windows Server 2008, XP, and 2003. The Global Wizard can configure your modem for a specific country
with just a few mouse clicks.
1. From the Multi-Tech website, download the Global Wizard executable file. You can find this file in
the zip file of the product’s resources.
2. Start the executable, then click Initial Setup and Country Selection. The Global Wizard dialog box
appears. Click Next.
3. View the Global Wizard as it searches for your modem and identifies it. Click Next.
4. Select the country in which the modem is to be used and then click Next.
5. Review your choice of country. If it is correct, click Next to configure the modem.
6. When Global Wizard announces that the parameters have been set, click Finish to exit.
Using AT Commands to Configure Country Code
If you are comfortable using AT commands, you can configure your modem using AT commands. You
must enter these commands in your communication program’s terminal window. If you do not have a
terminal program available, please use the Global Wizard Utility as outlined above.
To configure the modem for a specific country, execute the following AT commands:
1. Type AT%T19,0,nn (where nn represents the country code). Press Enter.
2. The modem will respond “OK.”
3. Type AT&F&W (this saves changes). Press Enter.
4. The modem will respond “OK.”
5. Type ATI9 (this verifies that country code has been chosen). Press Enter.
6. The modem displays the country code in decimal format followed by “OK.”
7. Check to be sure the code for your country is displayed.
If not, repeat procedure to correct.

On this page you can view approvals, configuration strings and responses by country and product.

Data. The Data LED flashes when the modem is transmitting/receiving data
to/from another modem.
[CD] Carrier Detect. The CD LED lights when the modem detects a valid carrier
signal from another modem. It is on when the modem is communicating with
the other modem and off when the link is broken.
[OH] Off-Hook. The OH LED lights when the modem is off-hook, which occurs
when the modem is dialing, online, or answering a call. The LED flashes when
the modem pulse-dials.
[TR] Terminal Ready. The TR LED lights when Windows detects and initializes
the modem.
Front Panel Overview
The MT9234MU-CDC has 4 LEDs on the front panel indicating status, configuration, and activity:
Connecting to the Internet
To use the modem to access the Internet, you must establish a dial-up account with an Internet service
provider (ISP). To locate an ISP near you, refer to a local directory or computer publication. Ask your ISP
to give you the following information:
● User name (also called user ID)
● Password
● Access number (the number you call to connect to the server)
● Host name and domain name
● Domain Name Server (DNS) server address
If you use the Internet for e-mail and newsgroups, ask the ISP to also provide the following information:
● E-mail or POP mail address
● POP server address
● Mail or SMTP address
● News or NNT server address
Setting Up a Remote Node
Before connecting to the Internet, set up a remote-node client program on your computer to make the
connection. Most web browsers can automatically open this connection. For instructions on how to set
up this connection, consult your ISP or your operating system’s online help or printed documentation.
Many ISPs provide a program that installs and configures this connection automatically for you.

You can use a network management tool to configure the modem from anywhere in your network from
one location. You can use the modem’s password and then issue AT commands to a remote
MT9234MU-CDC modem for maintenance or troubleshooting as if you were on site with the modem.
To remotely configure a modem:
1. Establish a data connection with a remote MT9234MU-CDC modem.
2. Send three remote configuration escape characters followed by AT and the setup password, and
press Enter.
Example: %%%ATMTSMODEM. You have four tries to enter the correct password before being
disconnected. If the password is correct, the remote modem responds with OK.
3. You can now send AT commands to configure the remote modem.
4. When you have finished configuring the remote modem, save the new configuration by typing
AT&W0, and pressing Enter.
5. Type ATO and press Enter to exit remote configuration. You can then break the connection in the
normal way.
These steps are valid regardless of whether the connection is established by the local or the remote
Multi-Tech modem.
CAUTION: If you hang up while you are in remote configuration mode, the remote modem can lock up.
Changing the Default Password and Escape Character
Multi-Tech modems are shipped with a default setup password (MTSMODEM). Because anyone who has
an owner’s manual knows the default setup password, change the password and the remote
configuration escape character.
Changing the Setup Password
1. Open a data communications program such as HyperTerminal.
2. To change the password, type AT#S=xxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxx stands for the password, and press
Enter. The password can include any keyboard character, and must be one to eight characters long.
The modem responds with OK.
3. The new password is saved automatically. You can now either enter more AT commands or exit the
data communications program. The next time you remotely configure the modem you must use the
new setup password.
Note: You can only change the setup password locally; you cannot do it remotely. Also, passwords are case
sensitive. The next time you enter the password, it must be in the same case as you set it up.
Changing the Remote Escape Character
To increase security, you can change a remote modem’s remote configuration escape character. The
remote configuration escape character is stored in register S9. The factory default is 37, which is the
ASCII code for the percent character (%). For ASCII code characters, refer to Appendix D.

Setting S9 to 0 (zero) disables remote configuration entirely—but if you do this remotely, you won’t be
able to change it back remotely.
1. Establish a remote configuration link with the remote modem.
2. Type ATS9=n, where n is the ASCII code for the new remote configuration escape character. Press
Enter.
3. To save the new value, type AT&W and press Enter.
4. Type ATO<CR> to exit remote configuration.

Appendix A – Regulatory Information
FCC Part 68 Telecom
1. This equipment complies with Part 68 of the 47 CFR rules and the requirements adopted by the
ACTA. Located on this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, the registration
number and Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for this equipment or a product identifier in the
format:
For current products: US:AAAEQ##Txxxx.
For legacy products: AU7USA-xxxxx-xx-x
If requested, this number must be provided to the telephone company.
2. A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring and telephone network must
comply with the applicable 47 CFR Part 68 rules and requirements adopted by the ACTA. It’s
designed to be connected to a compatible modular jack that is also compliant.
3. The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) is used to determine the number of devices that may be
connected to a telephone line. Excessive RENs on a telephone line may result in the devices not
ringing in response to an incoming call. In most but not all areas, the sum of RENs should not exceed
five (5.0). To be certain of the number of devices that may be connected to a line, as determined by
the total RENs, contact the local telephone company. For products approved after July 23, 2001, the
REN for this product is part of the product identifier that has the format US:AAAEQ##Txxxx. The
digits represented by ## are the REN without a decimal point (e.g., 03 is a REN of 0.3). For earlier
products, the REN is separately shown on the label.
4. If this equipment causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in
advance that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. But if advance notice isn't
practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible. Also, you will be
advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC if you believe it is necessary.
5. The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures
that could affect the operation of the equipment. If this happens, the telephone company will
provide advance notice in order for you to make necessary modifications to maintain uninterrupted
service.
6. If trouble is experienced with this equipment, please contact Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. at the address
shown below for details of how to have the repairs made. If the equipment is causing harm to the
telephone network, the telephone company may request that you disconnect the equipment until
the problem is resolved.

8. No repairs are to be made by you. Repairs are to be made only by Multi-Tech Systems or its

installation of this equipment does not disable your alarm equipment. If you have questions about
what will disable alarm equipment, consult your telephone company or a qualified installer.

International Modem Restrictions
Some dialing and answering defaults and restrictions may vary for international modems. Changing
settings may cause a modem to become non-compliant with national telecom requirements in specific
countries. Also note that some software packages may have features or lack restrictions that may cause
the modem to become non-compliant.
New Zealand Telecom Warning Notice
1. The grant of a Telepermit for any item of terminal equipment indicates only that Telecom has
accepted that the item complies with minimum conditions for connection to its network. It indicates
no endorsement of the product by Telecom, nor does it provide any sort of warranty. Above all, it
provides no assurance that any item will work correctly in all respects with another item of
Telepermitted equipment of a different make or model, nor does it imply that any product is
compatible with all of Telecom’s network services.
This equipment is not capable under all operating conditions of correct operation at the higher speed which it
is designated. 33.6 kbps and 56 kbps connections are likely to be restricted to lower bit rates when connected
to some PSTN implementations. Telecom will accept no responsibility should difficulties arise in such
circumstances.
2. Immediately disconnect this equipment should it become physically damaged, and arrange for its
disposal or repair.
3. This modem shall not be used in any manner which could constitute a nuisance to other Telecom
customers.
4. This device is equipped with pulse dialing, while the Telecom standard is DTMF tone dialing. There is
no guarantee that Telecom lines will always continue to support pulse dialing.
Use of pulse dialing, when this equipment is connected to the same line as other equipment, may give rise to
‘bell tinkle’ or noise and may also cause a false answer condition. Should such problems occur, the user should
not contact the Telecom Faults Service.
The preferred method of dialing is to use DTMF tones, as this is faster than pulse (decadic) dialing and is
readily available on almost all New Zealand telephone exchanges.
5. Warning Notice: No ‘111’ or other calls can be made from this device during a mains power failure.
6. This equipment may not provide for the effective hand-over of a call to another device connected to
the same line.
7. Some parameters required for compliance with Telecom’s Telepermit requirements are dependent
on the equipment (PC) associated with this device. The associated equipment shall be set to operate
within the following limits for compliance with Telecom’s Specifications:
For repeat calls to the same number:
● There shall be no more than 10 call attempts to the same number within any 30-minute period
for any single manual call initiation, and
● The equipment shall go on-hook for a period of not less than 30 seconds between the end of
one attempt and the beginning of the next attempt.
For automatic calls to different numbers:
● The equipment shall be set to ensure that automatic calls to different numbers are spaced such
that there is no less than 5 seconds between the end of one call attempt and the beginning of
another.

For automatically answered incoming calls:
● The equipment shall be set to ensure that calls are answered between 3 and 30 seconds of

limitations set forth in the directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament (Restriction of the use of
certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment - RoHS)
These Multi-Tech products do not contain the following banned chemicals1:
● Maximum Soldering temperature = 260C (in SMT reflow oven)

Registration of Substances:
After careful review of the legislation and specifically the definition of an “article” as defined in EC
Regulation 1907/2006, Title II, Chapter 1, Article 7.1(a)(b), it is our current view Multi-Tech Systems, Inc.
products would be considered as “articles”. In light of the definition in § 7.1(b) which requires
registration of an article only if it contains a regulated substance that “is intended to be released under normal or reasonable foreseeable conditions of use,” our analysis is that Multi-Tech Systems, Inc.
products constitute nonregisterable articles for their intended and anticipated use.
Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)
Per the candidate list of Substances of Very high Concern (SVHC) published October 28, 2008 we have
reviewed these substances and certify the Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. products are compliant per the EU
“REACH” requirements of less than 0.1% (w/w) for each substance. If new SVHC candidates are
published by the European Chemicals Agency, and relevant substances have been confirmed, that
exceeds greater than 0.1% (w/w), Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. will provide updated compliance status.
Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. also declares it has been duly diligent in ensuring that the products supplied are
compliant through a formalized process which includes collection and validation of materials
declarations and selective materials analysis where appropriate. This data is controlled as a part of a
formal quality system and will be made available upon request.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Statement
WEEE Directive
The WEEE Directive places an obligation on EU-based manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and
importers to take-back electronics products at the end of their useful life. A sister directive, ROHS
(Restriction of Hazardous Substances) complements the WEEE Directive by banning the presence of
specific hazardous substances in the products at the design phase. The WEEE Directive covers all MultiTech products imported into the EU as of August 13, 2005. EU-based manufacturers, distributors,
retailers and importers are obliged to finance the costs of recovery from municipal collection points,
reuse, and recycling of specified percentages per the WEEE requirements.
Instructions for Disposal of WEEE by Users in the European Union
The symbol shown below is on the product or on its packaging, which indicates that this product must
not be disposed of with other waste. Instead, it is the user’s responsibility to dispose of their waste
equipment by handing it over to a designated collection point for the recycling of waste electrical and
