OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
HOLDING THE UNIT
Before operating the unit, stand in the operating position and check that:
• The operator is wearing eye protection and proper clothing.
• The operator’s right arm is slightly bent, the right hand holding the housing grip.
• With a straight left arm, the left hand holding the D-handle.
• The unit is waist level.
• The trimmer cutting head is parallel to the ground and easily contacts the material to be cut without the operator having to bend over (Fig. 13).
OPERATING THE TRIMMER
Clear the area to be cut before each use. Remove all objects such as rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, or string which can be thrown or become entangled in the cutting head. Clear the area of children, bystanders and pets. At a minimum, keep all children, bystanders and pets outside a 50 foot (15 m) radius; there still may be a risk to bystanders from thrown objects. Bystanders should be encouraged to wear eye protection. If approached, stop the motor and cutting head immediately.
ADJUSTING THE TRIMMER LINE
While the unit is operating, the trimming line gets worn down and becomes shorter. This unit is equipped with an Automatic Line Advancement cutting head which automatically feeds additional line to the correct length as it wears down. If the line does not automatically advance, the trimming line may be tangled or empty. Refer to the maintenance section of this manual.
TIPS FOR BEST TRIMMING RESULTS
• Keep the cutting head parallel to the ground.
• Do not force the cutting head. Allow the tip of the line to do the cutting, especially along walls. Cutting with more than the tip will reduce cutting efficiency and may overload the motor.
• Cut grass over 8 inches (200 mm) by working from top to bottom in small increments to avoid premature line wear or motor drag.
• Cut from right to left whenever possible. Cutting from the left improves the unit’s cutting efficiency. Clippings are thrown away from the operator.
• Slowly move the trimmer into and out of the cutting area at a desired height. Move either forwardbackward or side-to-side motion. Cutting short lengths produces the best results.
• Trim only when the grass and weeds are dry.
• The life of your cutting line is dependent upon:
• Following the trimming techniques previously explained
• What vegetation is cut
• Where the vegetation is cut.
For example, the line will wear faster when trimming against a foundation wall as opposed to trimming around a tree.
DECORATIVE TRIMMING
Decorative trimming is accomplished by removing all vegetation around trees, posts, fences and more.
Rotate the unit so that the cutting head is at a 30˚ angle to the ground (Fig. 14).
WARNING:
N
ever use metal-reinforced line, wire, chain or rope. These can break off and
become dangerous projectiles.
WARNING:
To prevent serious personal injury, never operate the trimmer without the cutting attachment shield in place.
