4. Never allow adults to operate this machine without proper instruction.
5. To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, keep bystanders, helpers, children and pets
at least 75 feet from the machine while it is in operation. Stop machine if anyone enters the area.
6. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire,
bones, toys, and other foreign objects which could be picked up and thrown by the blade(s). Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury.
7. Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharging material against a
wall or obstruction which may cause discharged
material to ricochet back toward the operator.
8. Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury to the eyes.
9. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-
fitting slacks and shirts. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry can be caught in movable parts. Never
operate this machine in bare feet or sandals.
10. Be aware of the mower and attachment discharge direction and do not point it at anyone. Do not operate the mower without the discharge cover or entire grass catcher in its proper place.
11. Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or
under the cutting deck. Contact with the blade(s)
can amputate hands and feet.
12. A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause
blade contact or thrown object injuries.
13. Stop the blade(s) when crossing gravel drives, walks, or roads and while not cutting grass.
14. Watch for traffic when operating near or crossing
roadways. This machine is not intended for use on
any public roadway.
15. Do not operate the machine while under the
influence of alcohol or drugs.
16. Mow only in daylight or good artificial light.
17. Never carry passengers.
18. Disengage blade(s) before shifting into reverse.
Back up slowly. Always look down and behind before and while backing to avoid a back-over
accident.
19. Slow down before turning. Operate the machine smoothly. Avoid erratic operation and excessive speed.
20. Disengage blade(s), set parking brake, stop engine and wait until the blade(s) come to a complete stop
before removing grass catcher, emptying grass, unclogging chute, removing any grass or debris, or making any adjustments.
21. Never leave a running machine unattended. Always turn off blade(s), place transmission in
neutral, set parking brake, stop engine and remove key before dismounting.

SLOPE OPERATION
Slopes are a major factor related to loss of control and tip-over accidents which can result in severe injury or death. All slopes require extra caution. If you cannot back up the slope or ifyou feel uneasy on it, do not mow
it. For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of
this manual to measure slopes before operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than
15 degrees as shown on the slope gauge, do not
operate this unit on that area or serious injury could result.
DO:
,
Mow up and down slopes, not across. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.
,
Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other hidden objects. Uneven terrain could overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
3. Use slow speed. Choose a low enough speed setting so that you will not have to stop or shift while on the slope. Tires may lose traction on slopes even though the brakes are functioning properly. Always keep machine in gear when going down slopes to take advantage of engine braking action.
4. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for wheel weights or counterweights to improve
stability.
5. Use extra care with grass catchers or other attachments. These can change the stability of the
machine.
6. Keep all movement on the slopes slow and gradual.
Do not make sudden changes inspeed or direction.
Rapid engagement or braking could cause the front of the machine to lift and rapidly flip over backwards which could cause serious injury.
7. Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires lose traction, disengage the blade(s) and proceed slowly straight down the slope.
DO NOT:
1. Do not turn on slopes unless necessary; then, turn slowly and gradually downhill, if possible.
2. Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments. The mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge of a cliff, ditch, or if an edge caves in.
3. Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting your foot on the ground.
4. Do not use a grass catcher on steep slopes.
5. Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced traction could cause sliding.
6. Do not shift to neutral and coast downhill. Over- speeding may cause the operator to lose control of
the machine resulting in serious injury or death.
7. Do not tow heavy pull behind attachments (e.g.
loaded dump cart, lawn roller, etc.) on slopes greater than 5 degrees. When going down hill, the extra weight tends to push the tractor and may cause you to loose control. (e.g. tractor may speed
up, braking and steering ability are reduced, attachment may jack-knife and cause tractor to overturn).
CHILDREN
,
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the machine and the mowing activity. They do not understand the dangers. Never assume that children will remain where you last
saw them.
a. Keep children out of the mowing area and in
watchful care of aresponsible adult other than the operator.
b. Be alert and turn machine off if a child enters
the area.
Page 5
c. Before and while backing, look behind and
down for small children.
d. Never carry children, even with the blade(s)
shut off. They may fall off and be seriously
injured or interfere with safe machine
operation.
e. Use extreme care when approaching blind
corners, doorways, shrubs, trees or other objects that may block your vision of a child who may run into the machine.
f. Disengage the cutting blade(s) before
shifting in reverse. The "No-Cut-In Reverse" feature is a reminder not to cut in reverse and
to help avoid back over accidents. Do not defeat it.
g. Keep children away from hot or running
engines. They can suffer burns from a hot
muffler.
h. Remove key when machine is unattended to
prevent unauthorized operation.
,
Never allow children under 14 years old to operate the machine. Children 14 years old and over should read and understand the operation instructions and safety rules in this manual and should be trained and supervised by a parent.
TOWING
1. Tow only with a machine that has a hitch designed for towing. Do not attach towed equipment except
at the hitch point.
2. Follow the manufacturers recommendation for weight limits for towed equipment and towing on
slopes.
3. Never allow children or others in or on towed
equipment.
4. On slopes, the weight of the towed equipment may
cause loss of traction and loss of control.
5. Travel slowly and allow extra distance to stop.
6. Do not shift to neutral and coast downhill.
SERVICE
SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE:
,
To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and change clothes immediately.
a. Use only an approved gasoline container. b. Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a
truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always
place containers on the ground away from
your vehicle before filling.
c. When practical, remove gas-powered
equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle.
d. Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the
fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device.
e. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and
other sources of ignition.
f. Neverfuel machine indoors. g. Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the
engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling.
h. Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more
than ½ inch below bottom of filler neck to allow space for fuel expansion.
i. Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely.
j. If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine
and equipment. Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before starting the engine.
k. To reduce fire hazards, keep machine free of
grass, leaves, or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel
soaked debris.
I. Never store the machine or fuel container
inside where there is an open flame, spark or pilot light as on a water heater, space heater, furnace, clothes dryer or other gas appliances.
m. Allow a machine to cool at least five minutes
before storing.
GENERAL SERVICE:
1. Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon
monoxide, an odorless, and deadly gas.
2. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the blade(s) and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting.
3. Periodically check to make sure the blades come to complete stop within approximately (5) five seconds after operating the blade disengagement control. If the blades do not stop within the this time frame, your unit should be serviced professionally
by an authorized MTD Service Dealer.
4. Check brake operation frequently as it is subjected to wear during normal operation. Adjust and service as required.
5. Check the blade(s) and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade(s) for damage (e.g., excessive wear, bent, cracked).

SpeedControlLever
The speed control lever, located on the right fender, allows you to
regulate the travel direction and ground speed of the lawn tractor. To use, release the parking brake
and move the speed control lever forward (to travel forward) or
rearward (to travel in reverse). The further forward or rearward
that the lever is moved, the faster the tractor will travel. The lever
will return to the N (Neutral)
position when the brake pedal is
depressed.
Do NOT attempt to change the
direction of travel when the tractor is in motion. Always bring
the tractor to a complete stop
before moving the speed control
lever from forward to reverse or vice versa.
IMPORTANT:Always set the parking brake when
leaving the tractor unattended.

Move
throttle control lever to full throttle.
NOTE: Always operate the tractor with the throttle
control lever in the FAST (rabbit) position for the most efficient use of the cutting deck or other (separately available) attachments.
Release the parking brake by depressing the brake pedal. Position the speed control lever in desired position.
The further forward or rearward that the lever is
moved, the faster the tractor will travel. The lever
will return to the N (Neutral) position when the
brake pedal is depressed.
IMPORTANT:Do NOT attempt to change the direction of travel when the tractor is in motion. Always bring the tractor to a complete stop before moving the speed
control lever from forward to reverse or vice versa. Failure to do so could result in serious damage to your
tractor's transmission. IMPORTANT: First-time operators should use slower
speeds. Become completely familiar with the tractor's operation and controls before operating the tractor in at higher speed.
The lawn tractor is brought to a stop by depressing the brake pedal. Set the parking brake by fully depressing the brake pedal and keeping it depressed while grasping the parking brake knob and pulling it upward. Release the brake pedal to allow the parking brake to
engage.
WARNING: Keep feet and hands away from the discharge opening, the blades or
any part of the deck. When the unit is used for anything other than mowing operations, the blade drive should be disengaged.
To engage power to the cutting deck or other
(separately available) attachment, proceed as follows:
Move the PTO (blade engage) lever to the right and forward and place it in a notch for your desired cutting height.
Moving the lever to the right and all the way
rearward (into the BLADES STOP position) raises
and disengages power to the cutting deck.
NOTE: The PTO (blade engage) lever must be in the
BLADES STOP position when starting the engine, when traveling in reverse and if the operator leaves the seat. Refer to SafetyInterlockSwitcheson page 13
MovingTheTractorManually
Your tractor's transmission is equipped with a
hydrostatic relief valve for occasions when it is necessary to move the tractor manually. Activating this
valve forces the fluid in the transmission to bypass its
normal route, allowing the rear tires to "freewheel." To engage the hydrostatic relief valve, proceed as follows:
Locate the hydrostatic bypass rod in the rear of the tractor. See Figure 10.
Pull the hydrostatic bypass rod outward, then up and to the right, to lock it in place.

when worn. Refer to CuttingBladeson page 23 of this
manual for proper blade sharpening instructions.
Mulching
Some, NOT ALL, models come equipped with a mulch kit which incorporates special blades, already standard
on your tractor, in a process of recirculating grass
clippings repeatedly beneath the cutting deck. The
ultra-fine clippings are then forced back into the lawn where they act as a natural fertilizer. Observe the following points for the best results when mulching.
Never attempt to mulch if the lawn is damp. Wet grass tends to stick to the underside of the cutting deck preventing proper mulching of the clippings.
Do NOT attempt to mulch more than 1/3 the total
height of the grass or approximately 1-1/2 inches. Doing so will cause the clippings to clump up beneath the deck and not be mulched effectively.
Maintain a slow ground speed to allow the grass clippings more time to effectively be mulched.
Always position the throttle control lever in the
FAST (rabbit) position and allow it to remain there while mowing. Failing to keep the engine at full throttle places strain on the tractor's engine and does not allow the blades to properly mulch grass.
NOTE: Do NOT remove the discharge chute when
operating the mower with the mulch kit installed.
38- and42-inch Decks
To operate the cutting deck without mulching, on
models so equipped, simply remove the mulch plug by unthreading the plastic wing nut which secures itto the cutting deck. This will allow the clippings to discharge
out the side. See Figure 7.

BragLink Adjustment(AllTractors Model)
If the tractor turns tighter in one direction than the other,
or if either the drag link and ball joint are being replaced
due to damage or wear, the drag link may need to be adjusted. To do so, proceed as follows:
Place the steering wheel in position for straight- ahead travel.
Remove the lock nut which secures the ball joint to the steering arm. See Figure 19.
If the tractor does not come to a complete stop when the brake pedal is completely depressed, or if the tractor's rear wheels can roll with the parking brake applied (and the hydrostatic bypass rod pulled out), the brake is in need of adjustment. The brake disc can be found on the right side of the transmission in the rear of the tractor. Adjust if necessary as follows:
NOTE: A replacement cotter pin (part no. 714-0111)
is needed to complete this adjustment. Have one on hand before proceeding.
Looking at the transmission from the right side of the tractor, locate the compression spring and
brake disc. See Figure 18.

horizontally from the inside of the left rim to the inside of the right rim. Note the distance.
Behind the pivot bar, measure the distance
horizontally from the inside of the left rim to the inside of the right rim. Note the distance.
The measurement taken in front of the pivot bar
should be between 1/16" and 5/16" less than the measurement taken behind the pivot bar. If it is not,
an adjustment is necessary. Proceed as follows.
Locate the ferrule at the right end of the tie rod, just to the rear of the right, front tire of tractor. See
Figure 20.
Remove the cotter pin and fiat washer which
secures the adjustment ferrule to the tractors right axle.
Two turns at a time, thread the adjustment ferrule toward the right, front tire to lengthen the tie rod. Or, thread the adjustment ferrule away from the right,
front tire to shorten the tie rod.
Figure 20
NOTE: Lengthening the tie rod increases the tractor's
front tie toe-in. Shortening the tie rod decreases the tractor's front tire toe-in.
Reinsert the adjustment ferrule and temporarily secure it with the cotter pin removed earlier.
Make certain the steering wheel is in position for straight-ahead travel before again taking
measurements. Continue to repeat the steps above until a proper adjustment is achieved.
Secure the tie rod to the right axle with the fiat washer removed earlier and a replacement cotter
pin.
IMPORTANT:Do NOT reuse the original cotter pin once it has been removed.

Page 24
To properly sharpen the cutting blades, remove equal amounts of metal from both ends of the blades along the cutting edges, parallel to the trailing edge, at a 25° to 30° angle. See Figure 29.
IMPORTANT:If the cutting edge of the blade has already been sharpened to within 5/8" of the wind wing radius, or if any metal separation is present, replace the blades with new ones. See Figure 29.
It is important that each cutting blade edge be ground equally to maintain proper blade balance. A poorly balanced blade will cause excessive vibration and may cause damage to the tractor and result in personal injury.
The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver. Grind metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly.
When replacing the blade, be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked "Bottom" (or with a part number stamped in it) facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position.

SECTION9: OFF-SEASONSTORAGE
WARNING: Never store the machine or
fuel container indoors where there is an
open flame, spark or pilot light such as on
water heater, furnace, clothes dryer or other
gas appliance.
WARNING: Extinguish cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other sources of ignition prior to
draining fuel. Fuel left in engine without a stabilizer additive for extended periods deteriorates and will cause problems.
If the machine is to be inoperative for a period longer than 30 days, prepare for storage as follows.
Clean the engine and the entire unit thoroughly.
We do not recommend the use of pressure washers or garden hose to clean your unit. They
may cause damage to electric components, spindles, pulleys, bearings or the engine. The use
of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability.
Lubricate all lubrication points. Wipe the entire
machine with an oiled rag to protect the surfaces.
IMPORTANT:Refer to the Briggs & Stratton Operator/ Owner Manual (or Tecumseh engine's Owner's Manual) packed with your unit for information regarding correct engine storage.
IMPORTANT:The engine must be completely drained of
fuel to prevent gum deposits from forming on essential
carburetor parts, fuel lines and fuel tanks.
approved container outdoors, away from an
WARNING" Drain the fuel into an open flame.
Charge battery fully. The battery loses some of its charge each day when the unit is not used. NEVER store battery without a full charge. Recharge battery before returning to service or every two months,
whichever occurs first.
When storing unit for extended periods, disconnect battery cables. Removing battery from unit is
recommended.
Store unit in a clean, dry area. Do not store next to corrosive materials, such as fertilizer.
NOTE: When storing any type of power equipment in
an unventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to rustproof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially any chains, springs, bearings and cables.

Trouble Corrective Action
Possible
Cause(s)
Engine will not crank
Engine cranks but will not start
Engine smokes
Excessive vibration
Mower will not discharge grass
or leaves uncut strips
Safety switch but- ton not depressed. Battery installed incorrectly.
Battery is dead or
weak.
Blown fuse or cir- cuit breaker.
Engine ground wire loose.
Throttle or choke not in starting posi-
tion. No fuel to the car- buretor.
No spark to spark plug.
Dirty air cleaner.
Engine oil has been overfitled.
Engine loses crankcase
vacuum. Bent or
damaged blade. Bent blade.
Engine speed low. Speed selection. Cutting height set
too low. Blades short or dull.
There are two switches in the starting circuit of your unit: the brake pedal switch and the PTO (blade engage) lever switch. Make certain the actuator is fully depressing the but-
tons on each switch. The battery must be installed with negative terminal attached to black ground wire. Neg-
ative terminal is identified at the post by "NEG", "N" or "-". The positive terminal, identi- fied by "POS", "P" or "+", must be attached to the big red wire which goes to the solenoid. All batteries are to be fully charged before installing. Charge with 6 AMP charger until fully charged. Replace fuse with automotive type fuse. Fuses seldom fail without a reason. The prob- lem must be corrected. Check for loose connections in the fuse holder. Replace fuse holder if necessary. A dead short may be in the cranking or charging circuit where the insulation may have rubbed through and exposed the bare wire. Replace the wire or repair with electrician's tape if the wire strands have not been damaged. Note: Look for a wire pinched between body panels, burned by the exhaust pipe or muf- fler or rubbed against a moving part. Engine should have a black ground wire running from engine to frame or mounting bolt. Check operator's manual for correct position for throttle control and choke for starting.
Gasoline tank empty. Fill. Fuel line or in-line fuel filter, if so equipped, plugged. Remove and clean fuel line. Replace filter if necessary. Spark plug lead disconnected. Connect lead. Faulty spark plug. To test, remove spark plug. Attach spark plug lead to spark plug. Ground the spark plug body against the engine block. Crank the engine. The spark plug should fire at the electrode. Replace if it does not.
Ifthe air cleaner is dirty, the engine may not start. Refer to the engine manual packed
with your unit. Check oil level.
Dipstick not seated or broken. Replace damaged part. Engine breather damaged. Replace.
Stop engine immediately. Check all pulleys, blade adapters, keys and bolts for tightness and spindle damage. Tighten or replace any damaged parts. Stop engine immediately. Replace damaged blade. Only use original equipment blades.
Throttle must be set at full throttle. Use slower ground speed. The slower your ground speed, the better the quality of cut.
Raise deck.
Sharpen or replace blades (uncut strip problem only).
NOTE: For repairs beyond the minor adjustments above, contact your local authorized service dealer.
