Operation

Safe HandlingOf Gasoline:

1. Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuse
extremecarein handlinggasoline,Gasolineisextremely
flammableand thevaporsareexplosive,Seriouspersonal
injurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilledon yourselfor
yourclotheswhichcan ignite,

2. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately,

3. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer,

4. Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleoron a truck ortrailer
bedwith a plasticliner,Alwaysplacecontainersonthe

groundawayfromyourvehicle beforefilling.

5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck or
trailerandrefuelit onthe ground.Ifthis is notpossible,
thenrefuelsuchequipmenton a trailerwitha portable
container,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.

6. Keepthe nozzleincontactwith the rimofthefuel tankor
containeropeningat alltimesuntil fuelingiscomplete.Do
notusea nozzlelock-opendevice.

7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars, pipesandothersources
ofignition.

8. Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevapors
willaccumulateinthe area.

9. Neverremovegas caporaddfuel whileengineishotor
running. Allowengineto coolatleasttwo minutesbefore
refueling.

10.Neverover fill fueltank.Filltankto nomorethan Y2inch
belowbottomof filler neckto provideforfuelexpansion.

11.Replacegasolinecap andtightensecurely.

12.Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitofftheengineandequipment.Move
unittoanotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestartingengine.

13.Neverstorethe machineor fuel containernearanopen
flame,sparkorpilotlightas onawaterheater,spaceheater,
furnace,clothesdryeror othergasappliances.

14.Toreducefirehazard,keeplawnedgerfreeofgrass,
leaves,orotherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillage
andremoveanyfuelsoakeddebris.

15.Allowa lawnedgerto coolat least5 minutesbeforestoring.

General Operation:

1. Readthis operator'smanual carefully inits entiretybefore
attemptingtoassemblethismachine.Read,understand,

andfollowall instructionsonthe machineandinthe
manual(s) beforeoperation.Becompletelyfamiliarwith

thecontrolsandthe properuseofthis machinebefore
operatingit.Keepthis manualin a safeplaceforfutureand
regularreferenceandfororderingreplacementparts.

2. Thismachineisaprecisionpieceof powerequipment,nota
plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.
Yourunithasbeendesignedto performonejob:to mow
grass.Do notuse itfor anyotherpurpose.

3. Neverallow childrenunder 14yearsold to operatethis
machine.Children14yearsoldand overshouldreadand

understandthe instructionsinthismanualandshould
betrainedand supervisedbya parent.Onlyresponsible

individualswhoarefamiliarwiththeserulesof safe opera-
tionshouldbeallowedtousethismachine.

4. Tohelpavoidbladecontactora thrownobjectinjury,stayin
operatorzonebehindhandlesand keepchildren,bystand-
ers,helpersand petsatleast75feetfromlawnedgerwhile

it isin operation.Stopmachineifanyoneentersarea.

5. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto be
used.Removeallstones,sticks,wire,bones,toysand other
foreignobjectswhichcouldbetrippedoverorpickedup
andthrownbytheblade.Thrownobjectscan causeserious
personalinjury.

6. Alwayswearsafetyglassesorsafetygogglesduringopera-
tionandwhile performinganadjustmentor repairtoprotect
youreyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseserious

injurytotheeyes.

7. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand close-fitting
slacksandshirts. Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthe armsand
legsandsteel-toedshoesarerecommended.Neveroperate
thismachinein barefeet,sandals,slipperyor lightweight
(e.g.canvas)shoes.

8. Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhiletheengine
is running,exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedinthe
operator'smanual.

9. Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextreme
carein handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable
andthevaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan
occurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselfor yourclothes
whichcanignite.Washeryourskinandchangeclothes
immediately.

10.Donotput handsor feet nearrotatingparts.Contactwith
the rotatingbladecanamputatehandsandfeet.

11.Thebladecontrolhandleisa safetydevice.Neverbypass
its operation.Doingso, makesthe machineunsafeand may

12.Neveroperatewithout bladeguard,debrisshieldandblade

the engineisrunning.Shutthe engineoff,disconnectthe
sparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheengineto prevent
unintendedstarting.

21.Donotoverloadmachinecapacityby attemptingtoedgeat
toofast of arate.

22.Stayalert for unevensidewalks,terrainetc.Alwayspush
slowlyoverroughsurfaces.Do notusethismachineon
gravelsurfaces.

23.Donotoperatemachinein rain orwet soilconditions.
Alwaysoperatemachinefrom behindthe handlesand
positionyourselfwherethedirectline of sighttocutting
bladeisblockedby guards.

24.Alwaysstopenginewhenedgingortrimmingisdelayedor
whentransportingmachinefrom one locationto another.
Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.Stopthe
engine,disconnectspark plugwireand groundagainstthe
enginetopreventunintendedstarting.

25.Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadeforthis machineby
the manufacturer.Failureto doso,canresultin personal
injury.

Service

1. Neverrunan engineindoorsor in a poorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessand

deadlygas.

2. Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertainthe
bladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe
sparkplugwireandgroundagainstthe engineto prevent
unintendedstarting.

3. Checkthebladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequent
intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectblade
fordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewith
theoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,
listedin thismanual."Useof partswhichdo notmeetthe
originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto improper
performanceand compromisesafety!"

4. Lawnedgerbladesaresharpand can cut.Wrapthe blade
orweargloves,anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.

5. Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstightto besurethe equip-
mentis insafeworkingcondition.

6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheir proper
operationregularly.

7. Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stopthe engine,discon-
nectthesparkplugwire andgroundagainsttheengine.
Thoroughlyinspectthelawnedgerfor anydamage.Repair
thedamagebeforestartingandoperatingthe lawnedger.

8. Neverattemptto makeawheelor cuttingheightadjust-
mentwhiletheengineisrunning.

9. Manycomponentsonyournewedgercanwearwith
continueduse. Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheck
alledgercomponentsandreplaceimmediatelywith
originalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)partsonly,

Securing the Handle

IMPORTANT:ThisunitisshippedWITHOUTGASOLINE.

Aftersettingup theunit,serviceenginewithgasolineas
instructedin theseparateenginemanualpackedwithyour
unit. Besureto serviceenginewiththeoilenclosedwith
thisunitasinstructedinthe separateenginemanual.

NOTE: Referencetoright orlefthandside oftheedgeris

Positioningthe Edger Handles

1. Removeanddiscardanypackagingcardboardthat
maybepresentbetweenthe upperhandleandthe

lowerhandle.

2. Depressthebladecontrolat thetop oftheupper
handleandpivottheupperhandleupwarduntilit
snapsintoplace(1).

3. Tightenthe handknobs,whichare locatedonboththe
leftandrightsidesofthehandle(2).SeeFigure2.

Attachingthe Starter Rope

1. Locatethe ropeguidefoundonthe rightsideofthe
upperhandle.

2. Loosen,butdoNOTremove,thewingknobwhich
securestheropeguidetotheupperhandle.See
Figure2.

3. Standbehindtheunitand holdthe bladecontrol
againsttheupperhandle(1)andgentlypullthe starter

ropeoutofthe engine(2).

This unit is sh_pped

Aftersetting up the

Starter Rope / Recoil Starter

Thepullrope/recoilstarteris usedto starttheengine.

Locatedontheupperhandle,thebladecontrolmustbe
depressedagainsttheupperhandleinordertooperate
theunit.Releasingthebladecontrolstopstheengine
andtheedgerblade. SeeFigure3.

Blade Depth Control Lever

Thebladedepthcontrolleveris locatedontheright side
oftheupperhandle.Itis usedto controlthedepthofthe
cut.Thefurtherforwardthe bladedepthcontrolleveris
moved,thedeeperintothesoiltheedgerbladewillcut.

Primer

Theprimerisusedto pumpgasintothecarburetorand
aidinstartingtheengine.Useit tostarta coldengine,
butdonotuseit torestartawarmengineaftera short

shutdown.

AddingGasolineAndOil

Servicetheenginewithgasolineandoil as instructed
inthe EngineManualpackedwithyouredger.Read
instructionscarefully.

Edging

Tobeginedging,proceedasfollows:

1. Movethe unitovertotheareatobe edged,making
surethattheleft rearwheelison a hardsurfaceand

thebladeisovertheareatobecut. SeeFigure4.

Starting The Engine

Tostart theedger'sengine,proceedasfollows:

Movethebladedepthcontrolleverbacktothe
STARTpositionin the adjacent(top)notch.

Depresstheprimerbulbthreetimes,pausingtwoto
threesecondsbetweeneachpush.Incoldweather
(below50°F/19°0), itmaybenecessarytodepress
theprimerbulbfouror fivetimes.

IMPORTANT:Usingthe primerto restarta warm
engineafterashortshutdownisusuallynotnecessary.
Doingso mayresultinafloodedengine.

3. Standingbehindtheunit,depressthebladecontrol
andholditagainsttheupperhandlewith yourleft

hand.

4. Withyourrighthand,grasptherecoilstarterhandle
andslowlypulltheropeoutwarduntilenginereaches
thestartof itscompressioncycle(theropewillpull
slightlyharderat thispoint).

5. Afterslowlyallowingtheropeto recoil,pulltherope
witharapid,continuous,fullarmstroke.Keepa firm
griponstarterhandlethroughouttheentirestroke.

6. Allowthestarterhandletoslowlyreturntothe rope
guide.

NOTE: If the enginefailstostartafter threepulls,

depresstheprimeranadditionaltwotimesbefore
pullingthestarterropeagain.

Movethebladedepthcontrollevertothe leftandplace
intothe nextlowernotch. Thenmakea passalongthe
areato beedgedbeforeproceedingtothenextnotch.
Thefurtherforwardthebladedepthcontrolleveris
moved,thedeeperorlowerthebladewillcut intothe
ground. Severalpassesmaybenecessarytoobtain
thedesireddepthofcut. Donot lowertheblademore
thanonedepthnotchat a timewithoutmakinga pass.

3. For bestresults,proceedslowlyalongthepathbeing
edged,slowlymovingtheedgerbackandforththrough
thecuttingarea,againmakingsureto keeptheleft

rearwheelon thehardsurfaceandthebladeinthe
cuttingpath,closetobut nottouchingtheedgeofthe

hardsurface.

4. Onceyouhavereachedtheendofyourcuttingpath,
raisethe bladecontrolleverbackintotheSTART

position,movetothenextareatobecut,andproceed
againfromstep1.

Stopping The Engine

Tostoptheedger'sengine,releasethe bladecontrol
handle.

NOTE: Seeyour enginemanualpackedwithyour unitfor

moredetailedinstructions.

Lubrication

Engine

Refertothe EngineManualpackedwithyouredgerfora

Wheels

Lubricatethewheelsandbearingsatleastoncea
seasonwithalightoil.Alsoifthewheelsareremovedfor
anyreason,lubricatethesurfaceoftheaxle boltandthe
innersurfaceofthe wheelwithlightoil.

PivotPoints

Lubricatethepivotpointsonthebladecontrolbailand
bladedepthcontrollever

Bearing Block

Lubricatethebearingblockoncea season,orasneeded
bysimplyapplyingoilateachendofthecoverplate.

nuton top offrame,allowingthe idlerpulleyassembly
topivotslightlyoutfromtheframe.SeeFigure10.

2. Withyourotherhand,carefullyreachunderthe
rearoftheunitandremovethebeltfromaroundthe

engineflywheelpulley.

Wearleatherwork glovesto protect
your hands when working around the

wire and ground against engine before
