GENERAL OPERATION
Readthisoperator'smanualcarefullyinitsentiretybeforeattemptingto assemblethis machine.Read,understand,andfollowallinstructionsonthe machineandinthemanual(s)beforeoperation.Keepthismanualinasafe placefor futureandregularreferenceandfororderingreplacementparts.
Becompletelyfamiliarwith thecontrolsandtheproperuseofthismachine beforeoperatingit.
Thismachineisaprecisionpieceofpowerequipment,notaplaything. Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.Yourmachinehasbeen
designedto performonejob:toedgelawn.Donotuseitforanyother purpose.
Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsof agetooperatethismachine.Children 14andovershouldreadandunderstandtheinstructionsandsafeoperation practicesinthismanualandonthemachineandbetrainedandsupervised byanadult.

Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacksandshirts. Shirtsandpantsthatcoverthearmsandlegsandsteel-toedshoesare recommended.Neveroperatethis machineinbarefeet,sandals,slipperyor lightweight(e.g.canvas)shoes.

Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhiletheengineisrunning,except wherespecificallyrecommendedintheoperator'smanual.

Neverattemptto clearmaterialfromthebladeguardwhiletheengineis running.Shuttheengineoff,disconnectthesparkplugwireandground againsttheengineto preventunintendedstarting.
Donotoverloadmachinecapacitybyattemptingtoedgeattoofastofarate. Stayalertfor unevensidewalks,terrainetc.Alwayspushslowlyoverrough
surfaces.Donotusethismachineongravelsurfaces.
Donotoperatemachinein rainorwetsoilconditions. Alwaysoperatemachinefrombehindthehandlesandpositionyourself
wherethedirectlineofsighttocuttingbladeisblockedbyguards.
Alwaysstopenginewhenedgingortrimmingisdelayedorwhen transportingmachinefromonelocationtoanother.
Neverleavearunningmachineunattended.Stoptheengine,disconnect sparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheenginetopreventunintended starting.
Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadeforthismachinebythemanufacturer. Failuretodoso,canresultinpersonalinjury.
Ifsituationsoccurwhicharenotcoveredinthismanual,usecareandgood
judgment.
CHILDREN
Tragicaccidentscanoccuriftheoperatorisnotalerttothepresenceofchildren.
Childrenareoftenattractedto powerequipmentsuchaslawnedgers.Theydonot understandthedangers.Neverassumethatchildrenwill remainwhereyoulastsaw
them.
Keepchildrenoutoftheedgingareaandunderwatchfulcareofa responsibleadultotherthantheoperator.
Bealertandturnlawnedgeroff if achildentersthearea. Beforeandwhilemovingbackwards,lookbehindanddownfor small
children.
Useextremecarewhenapproachingblindcorners,doorways,shrubs,trees, orotherobjectsthatmayobscureyourvisionofachildwhomayrunintothe lawnedger.
Keepchildrenawayfromhotorrunningengines.Theycansufferburnsfrom ahotmuffler.
Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsof agetooperatethismachine.Children 14andovershouldreadandunderstandthe instructionsandsafeoperation practicesinthismanualandonthemachineandbetrainedandsupervised byanadult.
SERVICE
Safe Handling of Gasoline: Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextremecareinhandling
gasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable andthevaporsareexplosive. Seriouspersonalinjury canoccurwhen gasolineisspilledonyourselforyour clotheswhichcanignite. Washyourskinandchangeclothesimmediately.
Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer. Neverfill containersinsideavehicleoronatruckortrailerbedwithaplastic
liner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundawayfromyourvehiclebefore filling.
Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckortrailerandrefuelit on theground.If thisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuchequipmentonatrailer with aportablecontainer,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.
Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimof thefueltankorcontaineropening atalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources ofignition.
Neverfuelmachineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswill accumulatein thearea.
Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwhileengineishotorrunning.Allow
engineto coolatleasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.
Neverover-fillfueltank.Toallowforexpansionofthefuel,donotfill above
thebottomof thefueltankneck.
Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely. Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeit offthe engineandequipment.Movemachineto
anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingengine.
Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainernearanopenflame,sparkorpilot lightasonawaterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothesdryerorothergas
appliances. Toreducefire hazard,keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebris
build-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageandremoveanyfuel-soakeddebris.
Allowmachinetocoolatleast5minutesbeforestoring.
General Service:
Neverrunanengineindoorsorina poorlyventilatedarea.Engineexhaust
containscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessanddeadlygas.
Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertainthebladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthesparkplugwireandground
againsttheengineto preventunintendedstarting.
Checkthebladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequentintervalsforproper tightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked, worn)Replacebladewiththeoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)
bladeonly,listedinthismanual."Useof partswhichdonotmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadtoimproperperformanceand compromisesafety!"
Lawnedgerbladesaresharpandcancut.Wrapthebladeorweargloves, anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.
Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstight to besuretheequipmentisinsafe workingcondition.
Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperationregularly. Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplug
wireandgroundagainsttheengine.Thoroughlyinspectthelawnedgerfor anydamage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingandoperatingthelawn edger.
Neverattempttomakeawheeladjustmentwhiletheengineisrunning.
Manycomponentsonyournewedgercanwearwithcontinueduse.For safetyprotection,frequentlycheckalledgercomponentsandreplace
immediatelywith originalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)parts only,listedinthismanual."Useofpartswhichdonotmeettheoriginal equipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformanceand compromisesafety!"
Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingoroverspeedtheengine.The governorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeedof theengine.
Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary.
Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforusedgas,oil,etc..Improper disposaloffluidsandmaterialscanharmtheenvironment.

Accordingto theConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)andtheU.S. EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproducthasanAverageUseful Lifeofseven(7)years,or70hoursof operation.AttheendoftheAverage UsefulLifehavethemachineinspectedannuallybyanauthorizedservice dealertoensurethatall mechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperly andnotwornexcessively.Failureto dosocanresultinaccidents,injuriesor
death.
DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE
Toavoidseriousinjuryordeath,donot modify engineinanyway.Tampering
with thegovernorsetting canleadto arunawayengineandcauseit to operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwith factorysetting ofengine governor.
NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS
Engineswhich are certifiedto complywith Californiaandfederal EPA emissionregulationsfor SORE(Sinai[OffRoadEquipment)arecertified tooperateonregularunleadedgasoline,and mayincludethe following emissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification (EM),OxidizingCatalyst(0C), SecondaryAirinjection(SAI)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWC)ifsoequipped.
SPARK ARRESTOR
Thismachineisequippedwith aninternalcombustionengineandshould not beusedonor nearanyunimprovedforest-covered,brushcoveredor grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaustsystemisequippedwith a sparkarrestormeetingapplicablelocalor statelaws(if any).
Ifasparkarrestor isused,itshouldbemaintained ineffective workingorder bytheoperator.Inthe Stateof Californiathe aboveisrequiredby law(Section
4442of the CaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Otherstatesmayhavesimilar

3. Gentlypullthestarterropeoutof theengine.

Primer
Theprimerisusedtopumpgasintothecarburetorandaidinstartingtheengine.
Useit to startacoldengine,butdonotuseitto restartawarmengineafterashort
shutdown.

Besurenooneotherthan theoperatorisstandingnearthe lawnmower while starting engineoroperating mower.Neverrunengineindoorsor inenclosed,poorlyventilated areas.Engineexhaustcontainscarbon monoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.Keephands,feet, hairandloose clothingaway fromanymovingpartsonengineandJawnmower.
ToStart Engine
1. MovethebladedepthcontrolleverbacktotheSTARTpositioninthe adjacent(top)notch.
2. Pushtheprimerthreetimes.SeeFigure8. Donotprimeto restartawarm engine.
NOTE:Ifyoupushtheprimertoomanytimes,excessivefuelwill floodthe carburetorandtheenginewill bedifficult tostart.
3. Standingbehindtheedger,depressthebladecontrolandholdit againstthe upperhandlewithyourleft hand.

Thisbladecontrolmechanismis asafety device.Neverattempt to bypass itsoperation.
4. Withyourright hand,grasprecoilstarterhandleandpullropeslowlyuntil resistanceisfelt,thenpullwith arapid,continuous,full armstroke.See Figure8. Keepingafirmgriponthestartercordhandle,letthe roperewind slowly.Repeatuntilenginecranks.Lettheroperewindeachtimeslowly.
Keepa firm grip onthe cordhandleandmaintain sufficient backward tensiononthe cordatall timesto preventrapidstartercordretraction (kickback).Rapidretractioncanpull armand handtoward the engine fasterthanyoucanletgo,and result inbrokenbones,fractures,bruisesor sprains.
ToStopEngine
1. Releasebladecontroltostoptheengineandblade.
Edging
Rotatingcutting blademaythrow objectscausingpersonalinjury.Keep areaclearof bystandersanddo notoperatewithout guardsinplace.
Donotlowerblade if bladeisoverconcrete,asphalt,rocksorthe like.Blade canstrikesupportingsurface,resultingin personalinjury or property damage.
Tobeginedging,proceedasfollows:
1. Moveedgertoanareato beedged,makingsurethattheleft rearwheelison ahardsurfaceandthebladeisovertheareatobecut.SeeFigure9.

2. Withthebladecontrolsqueezedagainstthe handlein theoperating position,makea passalongareatobeedgedbeforeproceedingto thenext notch.Thefurtherforwardthatthebladedepthcontrolleverismoved,the
deeperor lowerthebladewill cutintotheground.Severalpassesmaybe
necessaryto obtainthedesireddepthofcut.Donotlowerblademorethan
onedepthnotchat atimewithout makingapass.
3. Forbestresults,proceedslowlyalongthe pathbeingedged.Slowlymove
edgerbackandforththroughcuttingarea,againmakingsureto keepthe
leftrearwheelonthehardsurfaceandthebladeinthecuttingpath,closeto butnottouchingtheedgeofthehardsurface.
4. Onceyouhavefinishededgingselectedarea,raisethebladedepthcontrol leverbackintotheSTARTposition,movetothenextareatobeedged,and proceedagainfromstep1.

Therightrearwheeloftheedgercanbeloweredintooneoffivepositionsto ease thetaskofedgingalongacurb.Toadjusttheheightofcurbwheel,proceedas

Youcanutilizetheedger'soptionaltrenchingfeatureinordertocreateawider cuttingpathfor suchthingsaslayingwirefor landscapelighting.
Disconnectthesparkplugwire andgroundagainstthe enginebefore performing the following steps.
Theedgerbladeissharp.Wearleatherwork glovesto protectyourhands whenworkingaroundthe edgerblade.
Usetwowrenches(onewrenchtopreventhexboltheadfromspinningand theothertounthreadtheflangenut)to removeflangenutthatsecures edgerblade,leavingthe edgerbladeinplace.SeeFigure12.

MAINTENANCESCHEDULE
Beforeperforminganytype ofmaintenance/service,disengageall controls andstoptheengine.Wait until all movingparts havecometoacomplete stop.Disconnectsparkplugwire and ground itagainstthe engineto preventunintended starting.
Followthe maintenanceschedulegivenbelow.Thischartdescribesservice
guidelinesonly.UsetheServiceLogcolumnto keeptrackofcompleted
