General Operation
1. Readthisoperator'smanualcarefullyinits entiretybefore
attemptingtoassemblethismachine.Read,understand,
andfollowall instructionsonthemachineandinthe
manual(s) beforeoperation.Becompletelyfamiliarwith
thecontrolsandthe properuseofthis machinebefore
operatingit.Keepthis manualin asafeplaceforfuture
andregularreferenceandfor orderingreplacementparts.
2. Thismachineisa precisionpieceof powerequipment,
nota plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionat all
times.Yourunithasbeendesignedto performonejob: to
mowgrass.Do notuseit for anyotherpurpose.
3. Neverallowchildrenunder 14yearsoldto operatethis
machine.Children14yearsoldand overshould readand
understandthe instructionsinthis manualandshould
betrainedand supervisedbya parent.Onlyresponsible
individualswhoarefamiliarwiththeserulesofsafe
operationshouldbeallowedto usethis machine.
4. Thoroughlyinspecttheareawherethe equipmentisto
beused.Removeallstones,sticks,wire,bones,toysand
otherforeignobjectswhichcouldbetrippedoverorpicked
upandthrownby the blade.Thrownobjectscancause
seriouspersonalinjury.Planyourmowingpatternto avoid
dischargeof materialtowardroads,sidewalks,bystanders
andthe like.Also,avoiddischargingmaterialagainsta
wallorobstructionwhichmaycausedischargedmaterial
toricochetbacktowardtheoperator.
5. Tohelpavoidbladecontactora thrownobjectinjury,
stayintheoperatorzonebehindthe handlesand keep
children,bystanders,helpersandpetsatleast75feet
fromthe mowerwhileit isinoperation.Stopmachineif
anyoneentersthe area.
6. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduring
operationandwhileperforminganadjustmentor repair
toprotectyoureyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcan
causeseriousinjuryto the eyes.
7. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand close-fitting
slacksandshirts. Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthearms
and legsand steel-toedshoesarerecommended.Never
operatethismachineinbarefeet, sandals,slipperyorlight
weight(e.g.canvas)shoes.
8. Donotputhandsorfeetnearrotatingpartsor underthe
cuttingdeck.Contactwiththe bladecanamputatehands
andfeet.
9. Amissingor damageddischargecovercancauseblade
contactor thrownobject injuries.
10.Manyinjuriesoccurasa resultof the mowerbeingpulled
overthefoot duringafall causedbyslippingor tripping.
Do notholdontothe mowerifyouarefalling;releasethe
handleimmediately.
11.Neverpullthemowerbacktowardyouwhileyouare
walking.Ifyoumust backthe mowerawayfroma wallor
obstructionfirstlookdownandbehindtoavoidtripping
andthen followthesesteps:
a. Stepbackfromthe mowertofullyextendyourarms.
b. Besureyouare well balancedwithsurefooting.
c. Pullthemowerbackslowly,no morethanhalfway
towardyou.
d. Repeatthesestepsas needed.
12.Donotoperatethe mowerwhileunderthe influenceof
alcoholordrugs.
13.Donotengagetheself-propelledmechanismon unitsso
equippedwhilestartingengine.
14.Thebladecontrolhandleisasafetydevice.Neverattempt
tobypassitsoperation.Doingso makesthe safetydevice
inoperativeandmayresult in personalinjurythrough
contactwiththe rotatingblade.Thebladecontrolhandle
mustoperateeasily in bothdirectionsandautomatically
returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
15.Neveroperatethe mowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureof
yourfooting. A slipandfall cancauseseriouspersonal
injury.If youfeelyouarelosingyourfooting,releasethe
bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyand the bladewillstop
rotatingwithinthreeseconds.
16.Mowonlyin daylightor in goodartificiallight.Walk,never
run.Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor
roads.
17.Iftheequipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe
engineandcheckimmediatelyfor the cause.Vibrationis
generallya warningoftrouble.
18.Shutthe engineoff andwait untilthe bladecomesto
acompletestopbeforeremovingthe grasscatcheror
uncloggingthe chute.The cutting bladecontinuesto rotate
fora few secondsafterthe engineisshutoff.Neverplace
anypartofthe bodyinthe bladeareauntilyou aresure the
bladehasstoppedrotating.
19.Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrail shield,discharge
cover,grasscatcher,bladecontrolhandleor othersafety
protectivedevicesin placeandworking.Neveroperate
mowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failureto doso, can
resultinpersonalinjury.
20.Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancauseaburn.Do
nottouch.
21.Onlyusepartsand accessoriesmadeforthis machineby
the manufacturer.Failuretodo socan resultin personal
injury.
22.Ifsituationsoccurwhicharenotcoveredinthis manual,use
careand goodjudgment. Callcustomerassistanceforthe
nameofyournearestservicingdealer.
Slope Operation
Slopesare amajorfactor relatedtoslip andfall accidentswhich
canresultinsevereinjury.Operationon slopesrequiresextra
caution.Ifyoufeel uneasyonaslope,do notmowit.Foryour
safety,usethe slopegaugeincludedaspart of this manualto
measureslopesbeforeoperatingthisuniton a slopedor hilly
area.Ifthe slopeisgreaterthan 15degrees,donot mowit.

Do:
1. Mowacrossthe faceofslopes; neverup anddown.
Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon
slopes.
2. Watchfor holes,ruts,rocks,hiddenobjects,orbumpswhich
can causeyouto slipor trip. Tallgrasscanhideobstacles.
3. Alwaysbesure ofyourfooting.A slip andfallcancause
seriouspersonalinjury.Ifyoufeelyouarelosingyour
balance,releasethebladecontrolhandleimmediately,and
the bladewill stoprotatingwithin 3 seconds.
Do Not:
I. Donotmowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,you
could loseyour footingorbalance.
2. Donot mowslopesgreaterthan 15degreesasshownon
the slopegauge.
3. Donot mowon wetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcause
slipping.
Children
Tragicaccidentscanoccurifthe operatorisnotalertto the
presenceofchildren.Childrenare often attractedto the mower
andthe mowingactivity.Theydo notunderstandthe dangers.
Neverassumethatchildrenwillremainwhereyou lastsaw
them.
1. Keepchildrenout ofthe mowingareaandunderthewatch-
ful careofa responsibleadult otherthan the operator.
2. Bealertandturnmoweroff if a child entersthe area.
3. Beforeand while movingbackwards,lookbehindanddown
forsmall children.
4. Useextremecarewhenapproachingblindcorners,
doorways,shrubs,trees,or otherobjectsthat mayobscure
yourvisionof a childwhomayrunintothe mower.
5. Keepchildrenawayfrom hotor runningengines.Theycan
suffer burnsfroma hotmuffler.
6. Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsoldto operatea power
mower.Children14yearsold andovershouldreadand
understandthe operationinstructionsand safetyrulesin
this manualandshouldbetrainedandsupervisedbya
parent.
Service
Safe Handling Of Gasoline:
1. To avoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextreme
care inhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable
andthevaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan
occurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselforyourclothes
whichcanignite.
2. Washyourskinandchangeclothesimmediately.
3. Useonly anapprovedgasolinecontainer.
4. Neverfillcontainersinsideavehicleoron a truckor trailer
bedwitha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthe
groundawayfromyourvehiclebeforefilling.
5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck ortrailer
andrefuelit onthe ground.If thisis notpossible,thenrefuel
suchequipmenton a trailerwitha portablecontainer,rather
thanfromagasoline dispensernozzle.
6. Keepthe nozzlein contactwiththe rimofthefuel tank or
containeropeningat alltimesuntilfuelingis complete.Do
notuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesand othersourcesof
ignition.
8. Neverfuelmachineindoorsbecauseflammablevapors
willaccumulateinthe area.
9. Neverremovegascap oraddfuelwhilethe engineis
hotorrunning. Allowengineto coolatleasttwo minutes
beforerefueling.
10.Neveroverfillfueltank.Filltankto nomorethanY2inch
belowbottomoffiller neckto provideforfuelexpansion.
11.Replacegasolinecap andtightensecurely.
12.Ifgasolineis spilled,wipeitoff theengineandequipment.
Moveunitto anotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestarting
theengine.
13.Neverstorethe machineorfuel containernearanopen
flame,sparkor pilotlightasona waterheater,space
heater,furnace,clothesdryeror othergasappliances.
14.Toreducefirehazard,keepmowerfreeof grass, leaves,
orotherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageand
removeanyfuel soakeddebris.
15.Allowa mowertocool at least5 minutesbeforestoring.
General Service:
1. Neverrunan engineindoorsorin a poorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbon monoxide,anodorless
anddeadlygas.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe
bladeand allmovingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe
sparkplugwireand groundagainstthe engineto prevent
unintendedstarting.
3. Checkthe bladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequent
intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectblade
fordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewith
theoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,
listedinthismanual."Useof partswhichdo notmeetthe
originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto improper
performanceand compromisesafety!"
4. Mowerbladesare sharpandcan cut.Wrapthe bladeor
weargloves,and useextracautionwhenservicingthem.
5. Keepall nuts,bolts,andscrewstightto besurethe
equipmentis insafeworkingcondition.
6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproper
operationregularly.
7. Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stoptheengine,discon-
nectthesparkplugwire and groundagainsttheengine.
Thoroughlyinspectthemowerfor anydamage.Repairthe
damagebeforestartingandoperatingthe mower.
8. Neverattemptto makeawheelor cuttingheightadjust-
mentwhilethe engineisrunning.
9. Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrail
shieldaresubjecttowear anddamagewhichcould
exposemovingpartsor allowobjectstobethrown.For
safetyprotection,frequentlycheckcomponentsandre-
placeimmediatelywithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's
(O.E.M.)partsonly,listedin thismanual."Useofparts
whichdo notmeettheoriginalequipmentspecifications
mayleadto improperperformanceandcompromise

10.Donotchangethe enginegovernorsettingor overspeed
theengine.The governorcontrolsthemaximumsafe
