5. Keepchildrenawayfromhotorrunningengines.Theycan sufferburnsfroma hotmuffler.
6. Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsoldto operateapower mower.Children14yearsoldandovershouldreadand understandoperationinstructionsandsafetyrulesinthis manualandshouldbetrainedandsupervisedbya parent.
Operation
Safe HandlingOf Gasoline:
1. Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuse extremecarein handlinggasoline,Gasolineisextremely flammableand thevaporsareexplosive,Seriouspersonal injurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilledon yourselfor yourclotheswhichcan ignite,
2. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately,
3. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer,
4. Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleoron atruck ortrailer bedwith a plasticliner,Alwaysplacecontainersonthe
groundawayfromyourvehiclebeforefilling.
5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckor trailerandrefuelit onthe ground.Ifthis is notpossible, thenrefuelsuchequipmenton atrailerwitha portable container,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.
6. Keepthe nozzleincontactwith the rimof thefuel tankor containeropeningat alltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Do notusea nozzlelock-opendevice.
7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars, pipesandothersources ofignition.
8. Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevapors willaccumulateinthe area.
9. Neverremovegas caporaddfuelwhileengineishotor running. Allowengineto coolatleasttwo minutesbefore refueling.
10.Neveroverfillfueltank.Filltankto nomorethanY2inch belowbottomof filler neckto provideforfuelexpansion.
11.Replacegasolinecap andtightensecurely.
12.Ifgasolineis spilled,wipeit offthe engineandequipment. Moveunitto anotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestarting engine.
13.Neverstorethe machineor fuelcontainernearanopen flame,sparkorpilotlight asona water heater,space heater, furnace,clothesdryeror othergasappliances.
14.Toreducefire hazard,keepmowerfreeof grass,leaves, or otherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanupoil orfuel spillageand removeanyfuel soakeddebris.
15.Allowa mowertocool at least5 minutesbeforestoring.
General Operation:
1. Readthis operator'smanual carefullyinitsentiretybefore attemptingtoassemblethismachine.Read,understand,
andfollowall instructionsonthemachineandin the manual(s) beforeoperation.Becompletelyfamiliarwith
thecontrolsandthe properuseofthis machinebefore operatingit.Keepthis manualin asafeplaceforfuture and regularreferenceandfororderingreplacementparts.
2. Thismachineisaprecisionpieceof powerequipment,not a plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes. Yourunithasbeendesignedto performonejob:to mow grass.Do notuse itforanyotherpurpose.
3. Neverallow childrenunder 14yearsoldto operatethis machine.Children14yearsoldand overshould readand
understandthe instructionsinthismanualandshould betrainedand supervisedbya parent.Onlyresponsible
individualswhoarefamiliarwiththeserulesofsafe opera- tionshouldbeallowedtousethis machine.
4. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto beused.Removeallstones,sticks,wire,bones,toysand otherforeignobjectswhichcouldbetrippedoverorpicked upandthrownby the blade.Thrownobjectscancause seriouspersonalinjury.Planyourmowingpatternto avoid dischargeof materialtowardroads,sidewalks,bystanders andthe like.Also,avoiddischargingmaterialagainstawall or obstructionwhichmaycausedischargedmaterialto ricochetbacktowardthe operator.
5. Tohelpavoidbladecontactorathrownobjectinjury,stayin operatorzonebehindhandlesandkeepchildren,bystand- ers,helpersand petsatleast75feetfrom mowerwhileit is in operation.Stopmachineif anyoneentersarea.
6. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduringopera- tionandwhile performinganadjustmentor repairto protect youreyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseserious injurytothe eyes.
7. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand close-fitting slacksandshirts. Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthe armsand legsandsteel-toedshoesarerecommended.Neveroperate thismachinein barefeet,sandals,slipperyorlightweight (e.g.canvas)shoes.
8. Do notputhandsorfeet nearrotatingpartsor undercutting deck.Contactwithbladecanamputatehandsandfeet.

9. A missingor damageddischargecovercancauseblade contactorthrownobjectinjuries.
10.Manyinjuriesoccuras a resultofthemowerbeingpulled overthefoot duringa fall causedby slippingor tripping.
Donotholdontothe mowerif youarefalling;releasethe handleimmediately.
11.Neverpullthe mowerbacktowardyouwhileyouare walking.Ifyoumustbackthe mowerawayfromawallor obstructionfirst lookdownandbehindto avoidtrippingand thenfollowthesesteps:
a. Stepbackfrommowertofully extendyour arms.
b. Besureyouarewellbalancedwithsurefooting.
c. Pullthe mowerbackslowly,nomorethanhalfway
towardyou.
d. Repeatthesestepsasneeded.
12.Donotoperatethe mowerwhileunderthe influenceof alcoholordrugs.
13.Donotengagethe self-propelledmechanismonunits so equippedwhilestartingengine.
14.The bladecontrolhandleis a safetydevice.Neverattempt to bypassitsoperation.Doingso makesthe safetydevice
inoperativeandmayresultin personalinjurythrough
contactwiththerotatingblade.The bladecontrolhandle
mustoperateeasily in bothdirectionsand automatically returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
15.Neveroperatethe mowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureof yourfooting. A slipandfall cancauseseriouspersonal
injury.If youfeel youare losingyourfooting, releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyand the bladewillstop rotatingwithinthreeseconds.
16.Mowonlyin daylightorgoodartificial light.Walk,neverrun.
17.Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor roads.
18.Ifthe equipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe engineandcheckimmediatelyforthe cause.Vibrationis generallya warningof trouble.
19.Shuttheengineoff andwait untilthebladecomesto a completestop beforeremovingthegrasscatcheror
uncloggingthe chute.Thecutting bladecontinuesto rotate fora fewsecondsafterthe engineis shutoff. Neverplace any partofthe bodyinthe bladearea untilyouaresurethe
bladehasstoppedrotating.
20. Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrail shield,discharge cover,grasscatcher,bladecontrolhandleor othersafety
protectivedevicesin placeandworking.Neveroperate mowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failuretodo so,can resultin personalinjury.
21. Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcan causeaburn.Do
nottouch.
22.Onlyusepartsand accessoriesmadeforthis machineby
manufacturer.Failuretodo so canresultinpersonalinjury.
23. Ifsituationsoccurwhicharenotcoveredinthis manual,use careand goodjudgment.Telephone1-800-800-7310for CustomerSupportandthenameof yournearestdealer.
Slope Operation:
Slopesare amajorfactorrelatedto slipandfallaccidentswhich can resultinsevereinjury.Operationonslopesrequiresextra caution.Ifyoufeeluneasyona slope,do notmowit.Foryour
safety,usetheslopegaugeincludedaspartof this manualto
measureslopesbeforeoperatingthis unitonaslopedor hilly
area.Iftheslopeisgreaterthan 15degrees,donot mowit.
Do:
1. Mowacrossthefaceof slopes;neverupanddown. Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon slopes.
2. Watchfor holes,ruts,rocks, hiddenobjects,or bumps whichcancauseyoutoslip ortrip.Tallgrasscan hide
obstacles.
3. Alwaysbe sureof yourfooting.Aslip andfall can cause seriouspersonalinjury.Ifyoufeelyouare losingyour
balance,releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediately,and thebladewillstoprotatingwithinthree(3) seconds.
Do Not:
1. Do notmowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,you couldloseyourfootingor balance.
2. Do notmowslopesgreaterthan 15degreesasshownon theslopegauge.
3. Do notmowonwetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcause slipping.
Service
1. Neverrunanengineindoorsorina poorlyventilatedarea. Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessand deadlygas.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertainthe bladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe sparkplugwireandgroundagainstthe engineto prevent unintendedstarting.
3. Checkthebladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequent intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefor damage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewiththe originalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,listed inthismanual."Useof partswhichdo notmeetthe original equipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformance andcompromisesafety!"
4. Mowerbladesaresharpandcancut.Wrapthebladeor wear gloves,anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.
5. Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstightto besurethe equip- mentis insafeworkingcondition.
6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproperopera- tionregularly.
7. Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stopthe engine,discon- nectthesparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheengine. Thoroughlyinspectthemowerforanydamage.Repairthe damagebeforestartingandoperatingthemower.
8. Neverattemptto makeawheelor cuttingheightadjustment whiletheengineis running.
9. Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrail shieldaresubjecttowear anddamagewhichcouldexpose movingpartsor allowobjectsto bethrown.Forsafety protection,frequentlycheckcomponentsandreplaceim- mediatelywithoriginal equipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.) partsonly,listedinthis manual."Useofpartswhich do notmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"
10.Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingor overspeedthe engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperating speedoftheengine.
