Important Things You Should Know
The
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker is designed to remain plugged in at all times (except during draining and extended periods of non-use). Brewing begins after water is poured into the water reservoir.
A Reservoir Power Switch (ON/OFF switch) is located on the lower left side to completely shut off all electrical components when your plans take you away from home for several days or when your coffeemaker will not be in use for an extended period. Your
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker has safety features which make the daily use of
this switch unnecessary.
Whenever the
SPEED
BREW ™ Reservoir Power Switch has been turned OFF, or the unit unplugged, allow the water in the tank to heat to the proper temperature before using. (This will take approximately 15 minutes after the Reservoir Power Switch has been turned on).
Your
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker unit has an especially designed water reservoir to keep the water at the proper temperature. This constant supply of hot water allows you to brew regular coffee in about 3 minutes.
When a pitcher of cold water is poured into the water reservoir, the cold water enters the internal tank and pushes out hot water to start the brewing process. This cold water is then heated to the proper temperature and stored until the next brew cycle is started. Make sure the decanter is on the warmer plate before water is added.
Brewed coffee flows into the decanter where it is kept at serving temperature by the warmer plate. The warmer plate is controlled by the ON/OFF switch located above the brew basket. NOTE: The Warmer Plate Switch only controls the decanter warmer. The warmer plate switch should be turned off when the decanter is empty or the coffeemaker is not in use. (For the Warmer Plate Switch to operate, the Reservoir Power Switch must be on.)
The decanter lid reduces coffee evaporation and heat loss. Always place the lid on the decanter when brewing coffee.
The two position Regular/Decaffeinated Brew Control Dial is located behind the water reservoir lid. This allows for proper brewing of regular or decaffeinated coffee. Decaffeinated coffee takes longer to brew than regular coffee.
WARNING: To avoid risk of scalding or other injury, do not move your
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker once you have filled the water reservoir.
Prepare Your Coffeemaker Before First Use
NOTE:To avoid the risk of damage to coffeemaker, do not plug in your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker until you
complete these steps.
1.Raise the water reservoir lid. (see Figure 1)
2.Turn the brew control dial to “regular”. Using the provided pitcher, pour one full pitcher of water into the water reservoir area on top of the
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker. Close
the lid and wait three minutes. (see Figure 2) NOTE: Do
not fill the water reservoir with any liquid other than cold water (or white household vinegar for cleaning - see “Routine Cleaning” on page 8)..
3.Place the decanter on the warmer plate. Open the lid. Pour a second full pitcher of water into the water reservoir. The water will flow into the internal tank. When the water reservoir is full, a small amount of water will flow into the decanter. NOTE: To
avoid overfilling the water reservoir, you must wait three minutes before adding the second pitcher of water.
4. When the flow of water into the decanter stops, empty the decanter.
5. To flush out the machine for first use, repeat steps 3 and 4 two additional times.
6. Place the empty decanter onto the warmer plate.
7. Now you may plug your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker into
a 120V, AC outlet.
8. Press the Reservoir Power Switch located on the lower left side of the
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker to ON. (see
Figure 3) Wait at least fifteen minutes for the water in the internal tank to reach the ideal brewing temperature. Follow the “Brewing Coffee” instructions on page 7 to brew a perfect pot of coffee.
IMPORTANT
Before Using Your SPEED
BREW™
Coffeemaker the First Time
Wash decanter, decanter lid and removable brewer basket in mild detergent and water. Rinse each thoroughly.

Brewing Coffee
1. Slide the brew basket open and insert a Mr. Coffee® 8-12 cup paper basket filter into the brew basket.
2. Add desired amount of coffee according to the coffee measurement chart found below. Shake lightly to level coffee. If decaffeinated coffee is used, then turn the brew control dial to “Decaffeinated” (see Brew Control Dial – Decaffeinated Coffee on page 8).
3. Be sure the paper filter is properly centered before sliding the brew basket into place.
4. Place the decanter on the warmer plate. Turn ON the warmer plate switch located on the front of the machine. (see Figure 5). This will keep your coffee warm when it has finished brewing.
5. Raise the water reservoir lid. Fill the pitcher with cold tap water. (1 cup equals 5 ounces) Pour the water from the pitcher into the water reservoir. NOTE:
Do not fill the water reservoir with any liquid other than cold water (or white household vinegar for cleaning - see “Routinge Cleaning” on page 8).
6. Close the water reservoir lid. Your
SPEED
BREW ™
coffeemaker will begin brewing coffee as soon as the water is added. (see Figure 6) After initial start up, you can brew 10 cups of regular coffee in about 3 minutes.
CAUTION: The
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker will begin to brew as soon as
water is added.
7. To insure proper brewing temperature please wait at least 10 minutes before brewing your next pot of coffee. This will allow the water to heat to proper brewing temperature. Attempting to brew faster than this may result in cold coffee.
SUGGESTED COFFEE MEASUREMENT
For the best results, use drip grind recommended for automatic drip coffeemakers.
TO BREW REGULAR GROUND COFFEE:
10 cups (50 ozs.) 13 tablespoons
8 cups (40 ozs) 11 tablespoons 6 cups (30 ozs.) 9 tablespoons 4 cups (20 ozs.) 7 tablespoons
* Use more or less coffee to suit your taste. 1 cup = 5 oz. brewed coffee PLEASE NOTE: Decaffeinated coffee may require additional amounts of coffee.
WARNING To avoid the risk of personal injury or damage to property, be sure that the brew basket is securely in place and that the decanter is centered under the brew basket before the brewing begins. WARNING
BREWED COFFEE AND GROUNDS, BOTH IN THE BREW BASKET AND DECANTER, ARE VERY HOT. HANDLE WITH CARE TO AVOID SCALDING. IF THE BREW BASKET OVERFLOWS, OR IF THE BREW BASKET FAILS TO DRAIN INTO THE DECANTER DURING THE BREW CYCLE, DO NOT OPEN OR HANDLE THE BASKET. RAISE THE RESERVOIR LID, UNPLUG THE COFFEEMAKER, AND WAIT FOR CONTENTS TO COOL BEFORE HANDLING.

Brew Control Dial - Decaffeinated Coffee
Your Mr. Coffee
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker comes with a special feature that allows you to brew a perfect decanter of decaffeinated coffee. Just turn the brew control dial to “decaffeinated”. This feature allows for the additional time needed when brewing decaffeinated coffee. Please note that only decaffeinated coffee should be used when your brew control dial is in this position. Caution:
To avoid overflowing the brew basket do not
use decaffeinated coffee unless the brew control dial is on the decaffeinated setting.
To Get Hot Water Only
The same steps listed on page 7 under “Brewing Coffee” can be used to obtain hot water. Keep the brew basket in place and omit the filter and coffee. NOTE: This water is hotter
than the water from your faucet and must be handled with care.
Draining the Water Reservoir
The water reservoir in your Mr. Coffee
SPEED
BREW ™ coffeemaker should be emptied
whenever the coffeemaker will be moved, shipped, or stored. Please follow these steps:
1. Turn Reservoir Power Switch OFF, unplug the
SPEED
BREW ™ power cord and allow the hot water to cool in the tank. Place the empty decanter on the warmer plate. Pour a full pitcher of COLD water into the water reservoir. Close the lid and wait for the water to stop flowing from the brew basket. Empty the decanter and repeat. This will cool the water in the water reservoir.
2. Remove the brew basket. Grasp the back of the
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker and tip the unit forward over a sink as far as possible.
Most of the water in the water reservoir will flow from the shower head. Continue tipping the coffeemaker until the flow of water stops. (see figure 1)

Figure 1
Routine Cleaning
The decanter and brew basket should be rinsed after each use. NOTE: The decanter, decanter lid, and brew basket are top-rack dishwasher safe ONLY. The outside of
the coffeemaker, including the area above the brew basket, can be wiped with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the coffeemaker.
In addition, your coffeemaker must be cleaned when you begin to notice excessive steaming or the brewing time increases considerably. This condition is caused by a
buildup of lime and mineral deposits from your water. It is recommended that you clean your coffeemaker once a month. To clean your Mr. Coffee® Speedbrew™ coffeemaker follow the steps listed below.
1.
Place a paper filter into the brew basket.
2.
Place the decanter onto the Warmer.
3.
Pour one full pitcher of undiluted white household vinegar into the Water Reservoir. NOTE: Do not use any other cleaning products in your Speedbrew™ coffeemaker. Hot water will flow into the decanter (Do not turn on the Warmer Plate Switch. The Reservoir Power Switch should remain ON).
4.
Let the unit sit for 2 hours. This will allow the vinegar to break down the lime and mineral deposits.
5.
After 2 hours, empty the decanter and return to warmer plate.
6.
Pour a full pitcher of water into the Water Reservoir. (The water/vinegar mixture will flow into the decanter.)
7.
Empty the decanter and repeat Step 5 and 6 an additional six (6) times. This will ensure that all the vinegar will be flushed out of the internal tank.
8.
Remove the paper filter from the brew basket and discard.
9.
After cleaning, wait at least 15 minutes before brewing your next pot of coffee. This will allow the water in the internal tank to heat to the proper brewing temperature.
Decanter Cleaning
Hard water can leave a whitish mineral deposit inside the decanter. Coffee can discolor these deposits, sometimes leaving a brownish stain inside the decanter. To remove these stains, follow these simple steps:
1. Use a solution of equal parts white vinegar and hot water.
2. Let solution stand in decanter for about 20 minutes and then discard.
3. Wash and rinse the decanter thoroughly using a soft cloth. Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners. These may cause scratches which can lead to breakage.

Mr. Coffee
SPEED
BREW™ Troubleshooting Guide
Problem Solution
The brewed coffee is lukewarm or cold immediately after brewing.
•Make sure that the
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker
is plugged into an outlet.
•Make sure that the Reservoir Power (ON/OFF) switch is ON.
•Allow the water inside the coffeemaker proper time to rise to brewing temperature. Refer to the “Prepare Your Brewer for First Use” section on page 6.
You have brewed two decanters of coffee within ten minutes and the temperature of the coffee in the second batch is cold or luke warm.
•Allow the water inside the
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker proper time to heat to brewing temperature. Refer to the “Brewing Coffee” section on page 7.
The brewed coffee is hot immediately after brewing, but becomes cold in the decanter.
•Make sure the warmer switch is ON.
The
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker does not brew a full decanter of coffee after a full decanter of water has been poured into the reservoir.
•Because of infrequent use, your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker may have lost water due to evaporation. Please follow these steps:
- If your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker did brew a partial batch of coffee then the lost water has already been replen ished and you should be able to continue with normal brewing.
- If your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker did not brew any coffee then the lost water has not yet been fully replenished. Promptly unplug your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker and follow the steps in the section titled Prepare Your Brewer
Before First Use.
The
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker does not brew any coffee when you attempt to brew less than a full decanter of coffee
•The minimum amount of coffee that your
SPEED-
BREW™ coffeemaker is designed to brew is 20 ounces (FOUR, 5 oz. cups). When brewing a partial batch of coffee, pour no less than 20 ounces of water into the reservoir.
The
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker requires more than four minutes to brew regular coffee.
•Set your brew control dial to “Regular”.
•Your
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker may require cleaning. Refer to “Routine Cleaning” section on page 8
The brew basket of the
SPEED
BREW™ coffeemaker overflows when you brew with decaffeinated coffee.
•Set your brew control dial to “Decaffeinated”. This will lengthen the brew cycle and should prevent overflow.
